Best "warm-up" bands you have ever seen?
What are some of the best opening bands you have seen? Here are a few of mine...

Rage Against the Machine opening for U2.

Sammy Hagar Band blew Boston off the stage.

REM opening for the English Beat in 1983.

Camper Van Beethoven opening for 10,000 Maniacs.

Aztec Camera opened up for Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and were awesome!

1. Faith No More made Billy Idol look like a geezer. And,
they were better than Metallica on the Monsters of Rock tour (w/ GnR).

Rise Against was MUCH better than AFI.

2. A3 opening for Spacehog.
I left in the middle of Spacehog's second song.

Technically, I guess they didn't open for Spacehog. It was a SXSW showcase, but Spacehog was pushed as the star act of the night.

11. Dave Grisman and Stevie Ray Vaughn! (Hagar involved)

The Dave Grisman Quintet opening for the Grateful Dead. The Dead were amazing as usual, but this was my first exposure to Grisman. WOW! :wow:

Stevie Ray Vaughn opening for Sammie Hagar. This was around 1983. Stevie was pretty much unknown, and was performing solo. He was fantastic! Unfortunately, the ass-hole Hagar and Y&T (a metal hair band of the era that played after Stevie) fans didn't 'get' actual musicianship, and freaking BOO'd Stevie off the stage. My girlfriend of the time who had dragged me there to see Hager didn't understand why I was so pissed. :eyes:

I had forgotten that Sammy had told the crowd off. Good for him.

That was so long ago, and who knows what my state of mind was at the time lol. I remember being totally in awe of this guy I'd never heard of before (SRV), remember the crowd booing him off, remember tolerating Y&T and wishing I had earplugs, and honestly the only thing I remember of Hagar's show was that he climbed all over the rigging.

I take it you were there? :hippie:

I was familiar with SRV at the time and came to see him. Whenever I tell this story, people cannot beleive it. A couple were at the show and booed him too and yet found SRV later in life and loved him.

But at the time the blues was kind of a dead art form.So he was playing something unfamiliar.

104. I saw The Who open for Herman's Hermits at the
Anaheim Convention Center, probably in 1967. They attracted two entirely different sets of fans, and some of The Who fans stayed around to openly taunt and jeer at Peter Noone and Co. It was a very strange bill.

Since Metallica was the only Monsters band I really wanted to see, I decided that it would smarter to see Maiden, who were due in town three weeks later, and wait for Metallica to return as headliners.

35. Geez, I think I started a thread on this once . . .
And I gotta MILLION of them. Well, not a million. A few. Shut up.

Mr. Bungle opening for System of a Down, Incubus and Boy Hits Car. System was only OK that evening but the bands that went on directly before them sucked furious amounts of ASS. Why Incubus got immensely popular besides the lead vocalist being a jeans-creamer is beyond me completely. That was the WORST ersatz-Def-Leppard-covering-the-Chili-Peppers crap I've ever seen in my life. Their hour seemed like days. And Boy Hits Car was a forgettable half-drunk embarrassment. Bungle is such a great collection of talent and composition and the audience knew it. They were chanting their name throughout other band's sets.

Nine Inch Nails as the middle act on Lollapalooza I. NIN in a Cleveland return. Terrible Lie started and turned the entire Blossom music center into a riot and the pavillion area into a giant mosh pit (which included several hundred people from the lawn). Not even Jane's Addiction, whom I love to death, could top that performance.

The Melvins opening for Tomahawk. I like most Mike Patton bands, but Tomahawk makes merely average music considering who's in it. And the Melvins shouldn't play second banana to ANYone. Period. Wasn't even a contest.

Every band that preceded the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lollapalooza 1992. My first and last Chili Peppers show. Weak sound, indifferent and obviously high Anthony Keidis, non-energetic show, total disappointment. Among the acts that blew them away that day: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Ministry (and they didn't even bust out "Jesus Built My Hot Rod") . . . I even thought LUSH was better than them.

Mastodon opening for Killswitch Engage. No small wonder why Mastodon is going to be the next huge metal act, as their riffing, sound, songs and stage presence made KE's metalbore sound plain in comparison.

High on Fire opening for Mushroomhead. WHY they went on this tour I DO not know. Possibly one of the loudest and most metal bands in existence opening for a band of 499 costumed clowns that play 10th-rate FNM throwaways mixed with Peabody's-core (Clevelanders will get that joke). An insult. Lots of mallgoths covering their ears. It made me laugh. Having to sit through Mushroomhead's non-educated 'Crombie-core fanbase cover their ears while HOF blew them off the stage was truly amazing.

Helmet opening for Faith No More. To FNM's credit, it's really REALLY hard to upstage them live, but Helmet had such perfect sound and vibe that night that they did. Plus FNM's classic line-up (Bottom, Patton, Bordin, Martin and Gould) was on their last legs, as there was lots of in-fighting and you could tell.

Primus opening for Fishbone. Fishbone is a way better live act than they are a studio one, but Primus was coming up through the ranks with Sailing the Seas of Cheese, one of the 1990's best albums. They owned that sold-out night.

Neurosis opening for Integrity. This was in 1996. That isn't a typo. Some brain surgeon actually scheduled Neurosis, one of the best live bands like, EVER, to job for Cleveland-core heroes Integrity. To the uninitiated, 1996 Through Silver and Blood-era Neurosis is as close as you're going to come to hearing a nuclear war accompanied by tribal juggernaut beats. It took all heavy music that was coming out back then and squashed it like a mere grape. And this was the first time I'd ever heard anything by Integrity. It was like following the DC firework display with backyard bottle rockets.

Forced Entry opening for Atrophy. FE were miles ahead of their time in 1989, but things simply didn't pan out for them. Their off-time heavy thrash served as a blueprint for many bands of this day and age. Anyway, Atrophy were nothing spectacular and they should have been placed lower on this bill.

Obituary opening for Sacred Reich. First Cleveland Obituary show. They turned the whole Agora ballroom into a giant pit and upstaged Sacred Reich and their pissy-pants frontman Phil Rind.

Napalm Death opening for Sacred Reich and Sepultura. This tour featured a Max-fronted Sepultura and Napalm Death was still the best act on that show. WAY more memorable than SR and just as good as Sepultura. That was a very riotous evening, as fans and the jock security butted heads quite often.

DBC and Forbidden opening for Sacred Reich. One of the best metal shows I've ever been to. Both openers scorched SR. Sacred Reich was the pushed underground metal act of it's day, but they didn't really endear themselves to crowds much (not Cleveland's anyway), so they didn't pan out. The frontman always yelled at the audience and was completely condescending for no reason.

Battles opening for Lightning Bolt. I'll go see Lightning Bolt again because they just piss energy, but Battles sonically outshone them.

Biohazard opening for Insane Clown Posse. When Biohazard left, two thirds of the audience did, too. ICP fired them three days later, and the other openers Coal Chamber quit in solidarity.

Worst Warmup Band I Didn't Witness And Would Not Have Out Of Fear of Bodily Harm:
Billy Joel opening for the J. Geils Band

Husker Du opening up for The Fall in 1982- Right around the time of Metal Circus, and they blew the fucking walls down. I instantly became a fan after that show.

Blue Rodeo opening up for Edie Brickell in 1990, I think; an old girlfriend dragged me to the show because she loved Edie Brickell (I HATED her music), and when Blue Rodeo hit the stage I was instantly hooked and again, instantly became a huge fan....

66. Ministry opening for Madness
oh, wait--actually, Ministry sucked then. This was their synthpop disco version, as seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sET1lhBMNiU

only it really, really didn't work onstage. At all. And 5,000 or so ska fans really weren't in the mood for it, and let them know, early and often.

Still, I enjoy looking back on that odd concert, and realizing how much fortunes and music changed in the immediate years that followed.

112. Not a BAND
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 06:08 PM by abq e streeter
but saw Richie Havens in Chicago in 1971; opening act was somebody I'd never heard of named Jackson Browne. Curtain opened, and there's this skinny white kid sitting on a stool in the middle of this huge stage holding an acoustic guitar.. And when he opened his mouth and started singing you could almost hear the jaws dropping all over Arie Crown Theater. And maybe not best, but have seen some odd , and very cool pairings. Marshall Crenshaw for Stevie Ray; Billy Preston for the Mahavishnu Orchestra; and I've resisted tooting my own horn about this but here goes: my old blues band, Doctor Blues sharing the bill one day at the New Mexico state fair in 1992 with some talented, but mostly unknown young women from Texas by the name of The Dixie Chicks.

71. I saw Mr Big's guitar player get his hair caught in a power drill
Atlanta, 1990. Still have the ticket stub to prove it.

http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/tours/90may1_story.htm

Opening for Rush on the Presto tour was "Mr. Big". Part of their act featured guitarist Paul Gilbert playing his guitar with a Makita power drill. During the show at Atlanta's Omni on May 1st, 1990, he accidentally got the drill hopelessly tangled in his hair in front of 15,000 perplexed Rush fans. The next day, Alex Lifeson made this sign, and left it next to the drill onstage, along with an assortment of other tools, including a glue gun, that the road crew thought Paul might prefer.

82. The Three O'Clock
Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 11:01 AM by BlueDogDemocratNH
The Three O'Clock, opening for REM at Walter Brown Arena, Boston, 1985

The Alarm, opening for Pat Benatar, Capital Centre, Landover, MD, 1986. Rolling Stone actually wrote about the Alarm's support gig during this tour, since they embarrased Benatar on a nightly basis.

The Sidewinders, opening for Steve Wynn, opening for Concrete Blonde, The Channel, Boston, 1990

Lone Justice, opening for U2, The Centrum, Worcester, MA, 1985

Steve Earle, opening for Mary-Chapin Carpenter, BankAmerica Pavillion, Boston, 2001

Winter Hours, opening for Let's Active, American University, Washington, DC, 1986

Danni Leigh, opening for Dwight Yoakum, BankAmerica Pavillion, Boston, 2000

Festivals don't really count, but I saw Offspring, Better Than Ezra, Smithereens, Violent Femmes, and the Lemonheads (among others) on a single afternoon in 1994 (Zephyrfest, City Park, NOLA)

90. Batallion of Saints opening for Social Distortion
It was at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento in 1984 or 85.

Nobody had heard of Batallion of Saints and the crowd assumed they would be a heavy metal band based on their name. They came out and completely kicked ass! The crowd went wild with a raging slam pit going the entire show. Then Social D came out and ruined everything. They were schwacked out on heroin, out of tune, and looked like they would rather be sleeping. The crowd turned on them, and the show was cut short to prevent a riot.

Oh, the good ol' days.

Buffalo Springfield was third-billed behind Peter&Gordon and the Beach Boys. They did a 20-minute version of "Blue Bird" that practically peeled the paint off the walls of the old Austin Coliseum---Steve Stills on the right side of the stage, Neil Young on the left. Best concert I ever went to.....
