2. This is precisely why Star Trek is better than Star Wars.
Star Wars weapons have no stun setting. And the hyperdrive never works. And there are no transporters. And no sexy Vulcans. Or sexy Borg.

Third rate universe if you ask me.

10. Thanks for the info. But that brings up another question.
The evil Empire has weapons with stun settings, but good guys like Han Solo and the Rebel Alliance don't? Maybe we misjudged who the good guys are.

16. Context is everything
Of course the Empire has non lethal weapons. They have the budget and their aim was to enslave.

The rebels and pirates like HS have cruder weapons.

Han's shooting of Greedo was self defense no matter who shot first.

7. Stormtrooper's rifles have a stun setting.
Leia got shot in the first few minutes of "A New Hope," and was brought to Darth Vader.

(Instead of the usual bolt, it was a circle.)

It's bad enough to digitally inset stuff, but when you change plot points just to pander to the kiddies...pandering to the kiddies is what led to Jar-Jar, George.

12. Eh.
I don't like the changes, but I don't think they kill the films.

The director's cut of Bladerunner kills it for me, I have to say. I know there are people morally opposed to voiceovers, but I find that position silly. Without the voiceover, the film is choppy. It would never have become a classic if the director's cut had been released first, IMHO.

Yeah, that's another subject. So what? :)

13. I don't mind the voiceover too much...
...but I prefer the version without the "happy ending" (no termination date for Rachel), which felt blatantly tacked-on and out of keeping with the tone of the film.

37. IMO
Voiceovers only work when:

1. They aren't simply decribing what's happening onscreen
2. They aren't simply repeating or rephrasing dialog
3. They aren't telling the viewer what any reasonably intelligent viewer should have been able to figure out anyway
5. They aren't giving superfluous information (eg., tortured ruminations about the human condition, etc.)
5. They aren't telling you how to react to another character (eg., "Freddie was as crooked as they come. I knew I couldn't trust him, but I didn't have a choice." Ho hum.) Exception: If the story is painting the narrator as unreliable, then this could work, but that's very rare in film, I believe

Not a fan, overall. I can count probably one and a half hands the number of films I've seen that really benefited from voiceover narration, and Bladerunner isn't one of them IMO.

18. I didn't like the new ending. Seemed artificial and sophomoric.
SPOILER!!!! (In case there's someone who hasn't seen both!)

The original ending was more about existence and consciousness. The new ending seemed a cop-out, like some high-schooler trying to be slick and psychadelic. "Wow, man, what if you don't really know if you're real, man, I mean, ever think about that?" That question was already in the film with Rachel, so including it with Decker seemed redundant.

Having Decker--the ultimate skin-job killer--have to deal with an "artificial" life form as an equal was more intriguing to me. Once you take away her programmed death, then what is the difference between a human and a replicant? What is God in that scenario? What is the soul? I thought they weakened that with the more trendy ending in the DC.

The voiceover had problems, but they aren't fixed in the DC. The film is more confusing, less substantial.

Just my opinions.

19. You should definitely stay away from the books...
...that were written to "continue the story." Deckard and Rachel emigrate to Mars and try to start a new life. But he gets pulled back to earth to terminate "the sixth replicant" (who was briefly mentioned by Deckard's boss in the film, before being completely forgotten about). Throughout the book, they raise the question of whether Deckard himself is a replicant. The whole story is a total muddle and really poorly thought out. I hope they never base a sequel on them.

26. Hmmm
The special special edition DVD of The Empire Strikes Back isn't half bad (MacDemid doing the emperor's voice, and even the extra dialogue not ruining the big bombshell revelation at the movie's end), but half of what was put back into episode 4 was pointless and silly, nor can I imagine Jabba being so "nice" compared to how he clearly is in later movies; I suspect Jabba was removed from ep 4 for a good reason.

Not to mention why Return of the Jedi needed any alterations at all...

25. One of my favorite scenes in Firefly...
is when a bad guy is holding one of our heroes hostage, a gun to her head, and Mal (who's running from Reavers and has no time to discuss anything) just immediately pulls his gun and shoots him dead. None of the dramatic, "tension-building" discussion we've seen in a thousand TV shows.

Firefly had a lot of scenes like that. It was great.
