Broken back. Broken femur. Two broken ankles. A loved one was hit by a sleepy driver. |
|
The poor woman.
She had to be extracted from the car. Some guy fell asleep and hit her head-on yesterday morning.
2 weeks before her wedding. Unbelievable. She is lucky to be alive but she is in severe pain and her life has just been changed dramatically.
I am thinking of sending her a portable dvd player, in lieu of overpriced flowers, to help with her extensive rehab.
What dvd's should I get her?

1. What a wonderful idea. |
|
She'll appreciate that so much more than flowers, I'm sure. Get her FUNNY movies. They may actually help her heal faster--really! (check link below for background on Norman Cousins and the ability of laughter to heal us). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Cousins

2. Not Misery! Try something light, a couple comedies are nice. |

Also, TV series sets are a good option. If my hubby was stuck in a hospital room for a couple weeks, he'd love both seasons of Deadwood with commentary, along with NewsRadio and the newer Battlestar Galactica - and maybe a few history channel or discovery channel series (modern marvels, WWI in color). Commentary and extras are critical for him. The kidlet would probably make it through with Futurama, Family Guy and Simpsons seasons.
Good luck to your loved one. Recovery sucks - and hopefully, the other driver was covered for the amount of damage. Sounds like she'll need close to a hundred K in care.

3. Second that on the TV Series |
|
The British series "The Office" is one of the best. ALso, the early years of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" are outstanding.

5. Yes. 100K is accurate. And this...just 2 weeks before her wedding. Plus... |
|
her dad is dying from metastatic melanoma to the liver. He's only 50 years old.
Life...is sometimes brutally cruel.

And what a nice idea, to get her a DVD player.

10. I just re-watched "Seabiscuit" |
|
I don't know if this would be too close to home, but at one point both Seabiscuit and his jockey are hurt badly, but both come back to triumph. Very uplifting, the whole movie is about perseverance in the face of adversity without being too in-your-face. But as I said, might be a bit too early for her to watch it.
I love "Chocolat" with Johnny Depp, "Sense & Sensibility", "Love Actually" -- nice, light, uplifting movies. Sneakers with Robert Redford is funny.
I'm so sorry about your friend. I'm glad she's alive, though. Was the back break very bad, or will she be able to walk once her legs heal? Or do they know yet?
And will she go ahead and get married while in hospital?

14. yes! me too. The book is really quite |

different, but that's not unusual for Hollywood adaptations. Roux ends up with someone else, and it ends on a happy/good note, just different.
I lent someone my dvd of Chocolat, don't remember who, and whomever borrowed it has never given it back. Damn!

15. GREAT recs! Her spinal injury is not severe and is actually the least of her injuries. |
|
She was whipped forward into her seat belt and it broke her back. But...NO brain injury! NO internal injuries!
And your movie recs are great! Love Actually is one of my faves!
Thank you.

16. Why not get her a NetFlix subscription? |
|
You could pick out some DVDs together, and both watch them - not even necessarily at the same time. The movies and the process of picking new movies could give you something to talk about that's frivolous and not connected to the pain, for those times when she just doesn't want to talk or hear about doctors and broken bones and rehab any more. She should be able to send and receive mail in a hospital. If not, you or another family member or friend can have them come to your house and then bring them to her.

18. Poor thing. And as for what to get her; I'm gonna post: interesting, longish adult romances. |
|
No, not that kind of adult romance. "The English Patient," "Broadcast News," "Random Hearts," "Closer," "The Mirror Has Two Faces" and "Brokeback Mountain."

22. Beausoir, what a nice thing to do |
|
I can't even imagine what she's going through right now.
Movie recommendations:
"While You Were Sleeping" "Legally Blonde" "Sweet Home Alabama" "The School of Rock"
Of course, none of the above are intellectual, but she'll laugh.
