Today we saw Kalaupapa (former leper colony), Molokai.

2. People were allowed to leave in 1969

Many patients decided, at that time, to stay. When the last of the patients leave, that area can go one of many ways... to the park service, the developers (who are drooling over it), or the descendants of the Hawaiian people. It will be a fight-- that's for sure! :hi:

4. i was on maui back in '87 ...

seems like iirc that there were no tours at that time (could be wrong about that) i just remember that i did not go over there. how many are still there? i hope the descendants win that battle, don't you?

5. There are about 110 people still on the peninsula...

..only a handful are patients (sorry, didn't get the exact number).

And, yes, while I also hope the descendants win that battle, I very much doubt they will. Primarily because they didn't on any of the other islands.

I went to Molokai two trips ago to Hawai'i. It's a really neat island. Sadly, it was raining too much for us to make it to Kalaupapa.
