BBC America fans... favorite shows?
Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 11:38 PM by libnnc
I'm addicted to "How Clean is Your House?", Little Britain, "Top Gear" and "Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares".

How 'bout you?

1. I love "Bargain Hunt"...
As a man who collects (and wears) vintage menswear,
David Dickinson is like a tacky GOD to me!

And they're running some "Coupling" reruns again, late at night.
That show was consistently LOL-brilliant! Still a fave.

9. Yes! Coupling
they tried to do a US version and failed miserably with the entire thing. Jeff is one of the most brilliant characters EVER. And Steve was in all 3 Pirates movies! Unfortunately, every time he came on screen all I could think of was "It's Steve!" Doesn't say much for the Pirates movies but damn Coupling is definitely in my top 10 shows of all time.

And I appear to be rambling...which might be because I've discovered that Pepsi Max (with extra caffeine!!) tastes really good with Captain Morgan's in it.

11. Yes, that "US Version" of Coupling was just about the WORST thing I've ever seen on TV...
I'm not a terribly "nationalistic" kinda guy; that series
was one of the very few times I felt ASHAMED on behalf of
my country.

It was probably #1 on my "worst ripoffs EVER" list until
the Koolaid-addicts at Fox did that "RedEye" copycat of
The Daily Show.

After "RedEye", there is no "Number Two" on my "OMG That Sux So Bad!" list.

"RedEye" has earned all positions from ONE to TEN;
compared to RedEye, everything else that has ever SUCKED
is now lumped together in the "runner-up" category.

20. Why oh why do we have to suffer through
lame ass US attempts at really great British shows? When will US producers get the message that the original is just fine the way it is; we don't need it dumbed down and lightened up. If we did, we wouldn't not have watched it in the first place! :banghead:

It's not like there's a humongous language barrier. And what little there is is understandable fairly quickly. "Men Behaving Badly" was another one that went over like a lead ballon over here but hysterical in the original.

67. Not as bad as the US version of Blackpool.
I don't see how they could take such a fantastic series and turn it into a heaping pile of suck.

Viva Laughlin is a travesty.

12. No, I haven't missed it- I've read every post on every thread so far. Twice.
But it seems the eBay-related threads have taken an early lead,
and I have nothing to say about that.

I don't do eBay, so my "collectable" comments and threads are
awaiting a sea change in that forum.

Plenty of people are interested in vintage clothes and will follow your lead. And plenty of people who support that forum are buyers in various niches not eBay.

27. Oh, BTW- about "Bargain Hunt"...
It's a great premise. They take two pairs of people,
and send them to a flea market with an "expert advisor"
and an identical spending limit.

THEN, they take what they buy to an antiques auction,
and see which team's stuff turns the biggest profit (if any).

I ALWAYS guess wrong! The things I think are real winners
hardly ever break even, and the things I think are boring
junk always seem to be the rare ones that double or triple
the original price.

I guess I don't think of that as a BBC show
because I saw two episodes, and then spent
a month feverishly downloading ALL the rest
and watching them here on this iMac.

Every episode was PURE GENIUS!

Probably the most perfectly poignant "final episode" I've ever seen.

There- I said it! I'm glad I said it, and, given the chance,
I would say it again!

14. I really liked Cash in the Attic and Bargain Hunt when I still lived in the States
Now I live in the UK I get these every afternoon! :-) Different hosts (the CitA and BH in the US are at least 3-4 years old).

I also liked Changing Rooms and Ground Force... they are no longer on here. Tischmarsh has his own show over here it's a bit campy.

However, there's a really good show... it may not be everyone's taste but I really like Hollyoaks and I heard it's on BBC America now. John Paul and Craig are my favourite characters at the moment and they are so sweet together. http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/H/hollyoaks/

Started with the first Hell's Kitchen - love the guy. But seeing now his dedication, commitment to truth, and love both for food AND for wanting people to succeed: I love the guy even more!

He's rough, but he's never mean - he's only honest.

And he really, truly does have a heart that wants to see people succeed.

40. I'm no longer a fan
The greatest strength of British TV is its dramas, and I used to like BBCA for its Mystery Monday and its dramas, both the series and the one-offs, such as State of Play.

Now Mystery Monday has disappeared from the schedule. No more Waking the Dead, no more Silent Witness, no more McCallum.

Furthermore, there were three dramas that I really got into: Bodies (about a medical resident, or "registrar," as they say over there, who gets into a conflict with an egotistical and incompetent surgeon), Bad Girls (an ensemble show about a women's prison), and Life on Mars (about a present-day cop who finds himself back in 1973 after a head injury).

There was a second season of Bodies in the UK quite a while ago. Is BBCA showing it? Not that I can see. There's been a second season of Life on Mars, which would hopefully resolve the loose ends in the plot. No sign of showing that, either. Bad Girls just completed a run of 8 years, but BBCA just plain stopped toward the end of the second season, with three shows to go.

They have done this with other shows, stopping in mid-season with no announcement or explanation.

Furthermore, the comedies they show are mostly oldies, except for Little Britain.

MI-5 is a terrific series, but I already saw the seasons they're showing when it was on A&E as the last remnant of good taste on that sadly deteriorated station.
