Man killed when machine gun discharges at gun show
:yoiks:

(Emphasis mine.)

Hollidaysburg Man Killed When Machine Gun Discharges At Blair County Gun Show
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. -- An auxiliary officer for a local police department was killed when a machine gun discharged at a private gun show in Blair County.

Michael Kurty, 36, of Hollidaysburg, was killed Wednesday night during a gun expo at the Hollidaysburg Sportsmen's Club.

Police said a Gatling mini-gun attached to a Humvee fired a few thousand rounds earlier in the evening before it discharged and released a fatal shot to Kurty's head.

19. Wasn't a public demo. It was apparently a corporate demo for the prison industry, not a gun show.

29. "So often"?
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 10:20 AM by benEzra
Pretty much the only people I hear using the phrase "gun nut" are people who (A) don't like civilian gun ownership and (B) like to bash people who disagree with them on issues. Which is a relatively small fraction even of gun-control supporters, never mind the population at large.

BTW, there's a reason why the ad hominem fallacy is called a fallacy.

14. Hi, EP!
I just noticed (and edited) my reply. It should have said, "I'm not particularly anti-guns." I'm not. We have a couple of guns in the house; CMW bought them years ago and I doubt either has been fired, or ever will be because CMW probably doesn't remember what he's done with the ammunition.

I don't usually go to gun shows because of the crowd, however. I'm amazed some of the people there can walk upright.

12. It Should Be Mandatory That All Guns At Gun Shows Be Loaded
And that hard liquor is passed out for free. Finally, the shows should be in a secluded area.

Have fun all!

21. Actually, somebody probably turned the barrel assembly while trying to clear the jam...
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 09:53 AM by benEzra
not realizing that a Gatling gun's firing mechanism is operated by spinning the barrels, not by pulling the trigger (as I understand it, the trigger controls ammo feed, not the firing mechanism; the strikers are cammed by the rotation itself).

And this tragedy didn't have a DAMN thing to do with "gun nutter assfucks," gun shows, or civilian gun ownership. See post #17.

38. It was a live-fire demonstration by the company, on a firing range,
for the benefit of potential customers of their prison comm systems and whatever else they sell (I don't know if they were advertising the GAU-17 or just showing it to be impressive; very, very few people outside the military or the Department of Energy have ever seen one in person).

It wasn't at a gun show.

17. The gun was owned or chartered by a CORPORATION marketing its products to the PRISON INDUSTRY
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 09:45 AM by benEzra
The gun was apparently owned or chartered by a CORPORATION marketing its products to the PRISON INDUSTRY, during a promotional event for law enforcement officials, not a "gun show." GAU-17's cannot be sold to anyone but police, military, or the government, period, under the National Firearms Act. A gun demonstration by a Class III SOT for the prison industry is not a "gun show"; it's a contractor marketing demo.

http://www.dsiiti.com/about/documents/NEWAPAgenda_2007.pdf
http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.detail/id/15269.html?nav=742

The gun was a GAU-17 Minigun like those the military mounts on helicopters, or that are used by the Secret Service and some other Federal agencies. Here's a video of the type of gun involved (in a Secret Service type vehicle):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb3DAc_o-dM

I know bashing gun owners is sort of a pastime for some DU'ers (never mind the fact that half of gun owners are Dems and indies, and most of us aren't "nuts"), but this is not about gun owners, gun shows, or civilian gun ownership. It is about egregious safety violations by people trying to sell stuff to the prison industry, and the victim was a police officer.
