Anybody ever thought about disaster movie aftermaths?
I was watching one of those crappy movies on the Sci-Fi channel last night called “Solar Attack” about how solar emissions from the sun were going through holes in our ozone layer and setting the atmosphere on fire. About 2/3 of the way through the movie, one of those emissions set off a firestorm that basically destroyed New Zealand. And, to stop the big emission from destroying the whole world, they had to set off multiple nukes at the North Pole.

Yeah, it worked. What a shocker. However, it got me thinking. Millions of people, animals and things were just wiped on in New Zealand (and, who knows what else got destroyed in the final 1/3 of the movie as the solar emissions got worse?) And, they just nuked the North Pole.

What the hell kind of world are they going back to? Granted, all life wasn’t wiped out, which is a plus...but, the Earth is not exactly the same. And, they have Lou Gossett Jr as president...

And, I got to thinking about these other “disaster” movies and their aftermaths. Usually, they end with the people celebrating not being wiped out.

The first movie that came to mind was “Independence Day” – dozens of mile in diameter space ships have just crashed to the earth’s surface. Most of the cities on the planet have been wiped out, with billions likely dead. It’s not exactly the Garden of Eden.

“War of the Worlds” ends similarly – billions likely dead, most of the infrastructure is ravaged.

The only “aftermath” wrapup I remember is “Deep Impact” where Morgan Freeman gives an inspiring speech on how life will go on and they will rebuild.

2. I remember one movie with an aftermath
But of course that was the whole point. It was one of those nuclear holocaust movies of the 70's - I can't remember what it was called but it was set in England and the survivor it followed was a young pregnant woman.

After worldwide nuclear war killed her entire family, she was left scrabbling around with all the other poor bastards, her baby was born severely fucked-up, she died at about 35 or 40 looking like she was 110, people essentially were put into work details, the daughter got raped and impregnated and gave birth to a monstrous dead thing which pretty much ended the movie and suggested the end of mankind.

I guess aftermaths are left out because they're not quite as entertaining as you'd think. :P

11. It bugs me when the survivors slap each other on the back and laugh.
One example: 'Volcano' with Tommy Lee Jones. A volcano rises up in the middle of Los Angeles. At the end of the movie he laughs and promises his daughter they'll go on vacation. Ummmmm.... hello! a city was just destroyed and hundreds were killed and you can giggle and think about nothing but having some fun now. Oy!

It's the reaction of people as though nothing tragic has just happened. I know movie makers want the audience leaving with a positive feeling even after a disaster movie but get real.... :eyes:

12. yeah - that is what I'm getting at
millions have died, but it's a big party because the main characters lived.
