Why would anyone *willingly* want the Dave Matthews Band to come play for them?
I just saw an ad that colleges can compete for a free Dave Mathews Band performance.

I don't get it.

Isn't that like offering a sack of festering, fetid, flaming shit to be served on your birthday cake for free? Sure, it comes at no cost - but who wants it?

4. I thought the same till last weekend.
He played in Atl recently and I must say I was extremely impressed with the show.
I still hear the echoes...

That said,I was not impressed by the average ant that was there. They have no clue as to what they are hearing.

5. Oh come on.
You can hate DMB's music all you want, but it doesn't make them suck.

I've seen them a couple times live, they're very talented musicians. I'm not a big fan by any means, but I can see why some people are.

7. Damn...does everyone here hate everything?
Dave rocks. I have seen him many times and every time he has put on a great show. Maybe he plays a lot of the same songs and really doesn't rock out like some others, but he brings it. Kind of like beginning jam bands, only with great songs and better vocals.

His drummer, Carter, is one of the best in business.

Not to mention all the good things that Dave does in the world.

Sometimes I swear if see one more Van Halen, Led Zeppelin or stupid ass classic rock thread here.....

I'm not a big Dave Matthews fan but I know lots of people who are. And one of them is my nephew who has an advanced music degree and it quite talented. At least Dave Matthews actually writes songs and plays instruments, unlike many of the musical acts that are currently on the billboard charts.

23. Dave Matthews
hates Bush. I am not a DMB fan but I don't hate him and I do appreciate that he does speak out against the occupation of Iraq and thinks Bush is a giant sized piece of shit.

All that said -- I only have one DMB song on my iPod - from the Stand Up album - "Louisiana Bayou" and I can tell you, it is not on my favorite play list.

there are far worse bands than his.

25. BTW they are/have played at a local bar Toad's place
since they are a Charlottesville band (basically local) this, I can imagine, is a HUGE "get" ticket. The club is maybe 2,000 but I doubt it is that big. You may not like them but that would be pretty cool to see a band that is that "worked together" in a setting like that.

BTW- a friend of mine worked out with the violin player and said he was a really great guy. The band, other than Dave, plays an invite only set about once a year at settings like a Holiday Inn lounge on the southside (I knew someone who got invited)

Dave may very well be a vampire

That is pretty much all I know about the DMB.

(like they did to the architectural tour of Chicago boat).

I think they just play. Having been dragged to a DMB show before, I can tell you that while it's not a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat ride, it's really not as bad as you're making it out to be.

30. well i think you are overlooking the costs of festering, fetid, flaming shit
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 12:11 PM by ikhor
of course, your average dump is pretty much free.

Festering is gonna take some time. I suppose you could trick some people into thinking that it's festering by adding some store-bought maggots, but i mean, thats really not gonna fool a lot of people. What you would have to do is take it outside and leave it on the backyard for at least a week or two. Time is money folks, and if you found a business that actually sold a product like that, they would charge for the long period of time involved in its creation. $$$

Fetid is a pretty easy one, but it really depends on what the person was eating the day before and the condition of their digestive tract health. You could take your chances on this one and just use shit from anyone and have a 75% chance that it would be fetid. In the chance that you were unlucky, just take out a craiglist ad. Technically thats free, but everyone will think you are joking and you actually might have to pay someone just for their time and effort. (you will definitely have to pay if you contract the services of a person who specializes in this type of work) $$$

The flaming part could be iffy. Your average poo is not flamable, so some sort of flammable substance is required, as well as an ignition source. The obvious and economical choice would be lighter fluid and a cigarette lighter. But then again it depends on how long you want the flame to last. Lighter fluid burns very quickly, and it might actually burn out before everyone gets a chance to see the cake. What you really need is a slow burning flame, and/or an apparatus that continually ejects more fuel onto the pile of shit. $$$

And the sack or other container you mention will have to come from somewhere. $$$

So you see, a sack of festering, fetid, flaming shit is really not free. There are costs involved, especially if you want it done right.

 :7

33. My kind of thread.
DMB has talented musicians. Unfortunately, their songwriting ranges from radio-friendly, happy-sappy, Blues-Travelery, sing-songity bullshit to plain pedestrian and unmemorable attempts at jam-rock. I'm not even a fan of neo-Dead jam-band music anyway (hell, I wasn't even a fan of The Dead, much as I tried), but at least make the shit interesting to listen to.

DMB has less psychedlics and drugs at their shows. More preppies (I even saw Chelsea Clinton at a Shoreline show) and way more frat boys and girls.

Their music is not nearly as moving as was the Dead's.
