that's it - game over - fini
pup we were suppose to get from Kentucky shelter was mauled and killed by another shelter dog two weeks ago - fighting with that place to get our money back, but we can probably kiss it good-bye

found another pup in New Jersey - did the hoop jumping, applications, etc - pup had kennel cough, we were suppose to hear today as to her health and whether or not we could get her this weekend. that pup has also died of kennel cough complications

so that's it - done with filling out application, jumping through hoops etc.

pulling crate apart tonight when I get home, putting all the puppy stuff in the celler

no more, done, finished, that's all folks

1. Oh, man, I'm so sorry
That's got to be such a roller-coaster of getting hopes up and having them dashed. :(

3. yeah, it sucks big time...

all we want is a pup 10-12 wks old, big dog (think dogzilla - mastiff, St. bernard, Newfie) doesn't have to be purebred, mixed breed ok, female

oh crap

5. That's terrible. However, have you considered finding a smaller rescue group
for a pup? Normally, they have better "control" over the environments that the animals they have are in. Consider searching Petfinder.com, as it looks like you have quite a range (KY-NJ). Hell, if you don't mind a roadtrip, I can scout Florida out for you (I know a great number of the folks in the trade down here).

Either way, I'm sorry you went through this.

6. That is just awful. I am so sorry about that. Poor doggies. Kennel Cough is nasty.
My puppy came to us with it and it was horrible for her.

7. Have you tried
The Animal Rescue League of Western PA or the HSUS of Western PA (both in Pittsburgh)? There's a LOT of shelters and rescue groups in this part of PA, do a Petfinder search using zipcode 15213, choose baby and extra large.

We have TONS of pups that need homes right now in shelters. The first group you went through didn't sound all that together, to be honest, WHY would they place any animal in a foster home with a known dog aggressive dog is beyond me. Crates can't hold a truly determined dog.

Here's a cutie-patootie 12-week-old Dane boy in OH (look at the size of those feet!!!) http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9059749

There's a *LOT* of big breed dogs up for adoption on petfinder from VA, MD, OH and PA.

8. Did petfinder
that's how we got the line on the one that was mauled and killed, rescue place was suppose to send our deposit back, hasn't done that, won't answer phone - so we're screwed out of $275 to boot

1-800-save-a-pet found us the one that died of kennel cough

9. Come up here and get a CORG.
Vinnie's mom will get charged up in January, that means Spring puppies.

This is a private breeder: one of the best parts of getting a purebred: no hoops. We know the family. Charley almost got to be "Pop," but he got snipped two weeks back.

10. thanks
and no offense to corgi's - they are great dogs, but unless it's been cross bred with a mastiff or St bernard, they are too small..

The call them "The BIG dog in a small package." Vin is as big in the body as a Springer, with short legs. AND HE IS FAST!!!

But... Haruka thinks they look deformed and doesn't like them.

:sigh:

They're terrific dogs.

12. I wouldn't give up. I've found TWO great dogs on Petfinder
I had no problems at all. By the time you do get a new baby, he'll be one lucky dog.

13. A) I'm truly sorry to hear that. B) A question:
What is stopping you from visiting a few local animal shelters, and just picking out a dog that you like? I don't "get" the whole idea of searching for the perfect dog on the internet, and sending money for a mixed-breed that you've never interacted with. Your local shelter might have the perfect dog for you. If not, try again next week.

Is there something that I'm (obviously) missing here?

15. what's missing
first place I checked was local shelters from Scranton PA and northern towns all the way down to Philadelphia, east to the New jersey and New York and Connecticut borders, west all the way to williamsport. We've spent hours calling, searching all the humane societies and animal shelters in PA

we lost our airdale last month, 11 yrs old, to kidney failure. We have two greyhounds, both adopted as adults

my partner will be out of a job at the end of next week. We have a window of opportunity to have the time to properly care for and train a puppy.

We need one that will get along with our cats and other two dogs. We like BIG dogs. We want a puppy, not a young dog, not an adult - a puppy

there are no puppies in our area available other than pit bull mixes, and we are not into pit bulls - we like the BIG DOGS - this is why we went onto pet finder and the 1800-save-a-pet sites.

we work with the greyhound rescue group - but all they take in are adult dogs.

we won't go to a puppy mill, nor buy from a pet shop. we are not even looking for a purebred, just a BIG DOG. Mastiff, St. Bernard, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhound -- BIG DOG mix.

If we could find one locally we would adopt it in a minute - less than a minute.

17. We're with a couple of groups up here: I'll keep you posted.
One of them is called "Last Day Rescue" because that's what they do: rescue on the last day from pounds. They get pups sometimes; I can look out for you and network if you like.
