Amazingly, I'm not the only geek out there...
So I'm surfing the HBO channels, and I watch part of Star Trek IV (the save the whales one). Chekov and Uhura are onboard a nuclear aircraft carrier. Scotty beams back Uhura, but Chekov gets captured by security.

Wacky interrogation scene follows. Then Chekov grabs his phaser and says "I'm very sorry, but I'll have to stun you." "Fine. Stun me." Chekov presses the trigger, and nothing happens. "It must be the radiation". Chekov drops the phaser and runs.

His phaser and communicator are still on the table.

I go, "Heyyy..." He's leaving behind 23rd century technology. And no chance to retrieve it before they leave.

So I look it up on the Intertubes to see if any other geeks noticed.

Yup:

The novel The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh established that Chekov's Klingon phaser and communicator, which he threw at the investigators on the Enterprise in order to make his escape attempt, were sent to Area 51 and then subsequently recovered by Gary Seven before they could have been completely analyzed and potentially altering history.

2. Gary Seven is my favorite all time ancillary Star Trek character
It's a shame he never got that spin off series

3. It was the intent to do a Gary Seven spin-off.
I don't recall why, but it fell through.

4. Because the production company wouldn't fund it

Star Trek was barely getting by on its own. So they thought, why throw more money down the rabbit hole?

5. Turns out they weren't even getting by
At least not during its first season. Lucille Ball (Desilu produced Star Trek, Mannix, and Mission Impossible) deficit-financed Star Trek. Amazingly, at the board of directors meeting, she thought it was "celebrities on a cruise ship" (she'd been sent the pilot script, but read only the title).

6. It shows you how ahead of their time Desilu was
And how shallow and regressive Hollywood actually is
