1. Sherlock Holmes; Dune; Star Trek

Although partly this depends on definition - only Doyle's stories are canonical, so it's almost more fan fiction than any kind of actual "continuation" of a series.

6. L. Ron Hubbard seems to have been fairly prolific even after death...
He had a science fiction series that went on for a while, I think, plus lots of other non-series crap.

In the Attic series. I read one and didn't care for it. For years after they died, new books kept coming out. All those poor trees died for that tripe.

Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 03:47 PM by JonathanChance
Continued after one of the original authors who wrote pretty well much the first thirty books died seven years ago.

All the books except for the first one were written under the pen name James Axler.

66 books written by over 50 authors with diverse backgrounds ranging from shepherds and doctors to kings and tax-collectors, written in approximately six different languages and from three different continents over the span of 3500 years... good luck!

On Edit: I think it was Stephen King...

I doubt that anyone even did write that series but for a while in the 90's it looked like they would go on forever.

26. Lawrence Sanders' Archy McNally series
now written by Vincent Lardo, who I sincerely hope did not have a weight problem in third grade. :-)

Factoid: The Lardo books are actually titled (for example) "Lawrence Sanders McNally's Dare", so that the publisher can continue to print the name "Lawrence Sanders" above the real title on the cover, in the same font as when Sanders was the author, sort of like the reverse of what the Goldmans' publisher did with "if I DID IT".
