Woohoo! I'm going to see Genesis tonight!
Cue the people whining about "Invisible Touch" and/or the lack of Peter Gabriel and/or Steve Hackett in 5...4...3...

1. If it was a real retrospective tour even w/out Gabriel I would have dropped the $
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 08:16 AM by Mike Daniels
I like Genesis and saw them during the Invisible Touch tour. And, in all likelihood you'll see a cool show (esp. with a running time of 2.5 hours).

However, despite their claims of a retrospective show I'll bank that w/out Gabriel/Hackett the set list is 95% post-Duke with the only pre-Duke material being limited to "Follow Me" and "Afterglow" and maybe a 10 minute Gabriel-era medley. Since I saw that show in 1987/88, as much as I like the band I couldn't see dropping the big bucks in order to be in decent seating this time around.

They are playing in DC (my neck of the woods) in a few days so I guess I'll find out if I made the right call shortly.

3. I would have paid money for that set list
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 08:51 AM by Mike Daniels
Pretty much touches the two last and best Gabriel-era albums and something from every album from the Collins era.

On edit: I am curious as to the total freeze-out on the Abacab album. I read that when they were rehearsing the title track and Phil was "what the hell is this song about" and that was the end of that. Still, "Me and Sarah Jane" or "Dodo" would have been good replacements if they were going for one of the more epic tracks from that album.

I also just read the review at http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/09/17/genesis-the-biggest-tour-that-you-havent-heard-much-about/ and I guess I'll definitely need to put the eventual concert DVD on my to-buy list

29. What?? No "Misunderstanding" or "Man on the Corner"
How about "No Reply at All"????????? Three of their best right there.

Tonight Tonight Tonight/Invisible Touch are two of their worst songs.

30. Oh, I don't know...
While the lyrics aren't all that hot, I think the long version of "Tonight Tonight Tonight" has some nice prog elements to it. The edited "single" version is missing a lot of the tension/release included in the long version.

5. There must be some misunderstanding -- not on list?
I always thought Genesis fans were similar to Hare Krishnas, although Follow You/Follow Me always makes me feel like crying for some reason...

8. Mysterious religious cult. Questioning their faith only leads them to spend another hour explaining
it to you. You can't get away from a Genesis fan trying to convince you they're the best band in the universe. They're almost as bad as programmers...

9. Ah, I see. I've never been that type of fan.
I like too many bands to get that obsessive. I suspect those are the same people that look at you as if you just dug up their grandmother and had your way with her if you tell them you like "Invisible Touch."

it would be pretty hard to tell them apart visually.

17. Genesis rules!
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Bbernardini, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds.

24. See, from my perspective Invisible Touch was the one album
where Genesis came dangerously close to Phil Collins backed by two generic session players.

With the exception of "Domino" and the unedited track of "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" the songs and instrumentation could have easily fit on Phil's "No Jacket Required" album from around that same time period.

When you factor in that you only hear the gutted version of Tonightx3 on the radio and in concert nowadays it's pretty easy to say that "Invisible Touch" is the least Genesis-like album in their entire Gabriel/Collins era discography.

28. LOL!
Who is Steve Hackett? I confess I prefer Peter Gabriel, but that's just a personal sex appeal sort of thing. I wouldn't mind accompanying you to the concert at all. Especially since I'll be home alone with three small boys while my husband is in Manhattan.
