Well, today I had to do it...
And I dont feel happy about it.

Today, just a bit ago actually, I had to call the police to remove someone from the job center.

I didn't want to, but it escalated to the point I had no choice.

I noticed one of the patrons here surfing porn, so I asked him to stop. He said no, and that my supervisor lets him, and even knows he looks at porn while in the job center.

Well, I am well aware that she has asked others to leave for looking at the same site, and even much more tame sites than the one he was browsing, so I said if you would like, you can leave now and come back at 12 and talk to her about it if you feel I am wrong.

At that point, it started an argument. So I called to the front desk for help, the building manager came up, and in my opinion did his best to escalate the situation, but still the patron did not help himself at all.

Anyway, it got physical, I was hit and threatened so the cops were called.

I really wish this had not happened, not because I was hit but because now it will be even harder for this person to find a job.

I feel rotten, and I am POSITIVE I will be attacked for this here on DU...

where I was attacked for trying to help the homeless.

I do feel bad for calling the police and that teh situation escalated to that level. I did not want it to go that far.

6. Not your fault it went that far.....
This person obviously had blatant disregard for the intended use of the resources. You had every right to ask him to leave, or at least stop going to the porn sites.

14. All right....
I can see why you might be kind of gun shy about it....

But it looked as if more folks were sympathetic with you than against you.

I've little doubt being homeless is a tremendous burden on one's psyche; however, it doesn't give anybody carte blanche to do whatever they wish, whenever they wish. There are good and bad people across all socio-economic lines- and you just met one of the bad ones, unfortunately. If you've been doing this work for any length of time, I'm sure you could tell me at least a few stories of someone you helped.

Keep your head up- you did what you (unfortunately) had to do.

but you're POSITIVE you'll be attacked for this?

Sorry... but that stuff REALLY took away from your message.

I don't think you did anything wrong... and it seems no one else did, either.

I don't understand the need for that statement at all.

will come in here and tell me to let them look at porn, act out, and generally do their own thing and call me a republican for asking them to look for a job while up here.

4. anyone who attacks you over this is wrong
i don't see anything wrong with what you did. do you have a sign out front that says "Free Porn"? is it policy to allow people to surf for porn on your computers? no. if that guy didn't want to follow the rules of the place, he had no business being there.

anyone who can't control themselves to the point where they resort to physical violence deserves to be arrested. you did nothing wrong.

try to let it go. don't dwell on it. it happened, it's over.

It has no place at a job site... Unless of course, your business is porn. Which it is not

8. It's okay. You're not rotten, even if you feel that way.
No matter what your client may have argued, we do not have the right to surf porn in shared public spaces.

My husband once had to call the cops on a homeless client. The man had been agitating other clients in the waiting area all morning long and behaving aggressively to staff. After my husband told him for the third time to cool it, or leave, or answer to the cops, he then approached my husband - with his hand clutched around something and pulled back as if to throw it. He threw hard, my husband ducked and rolled out of his chair - but not before being beaned in the noggin by an empty juicebox.

What else was there to do? They called the police, had the man arrested, and my husband testified in court about the juice box incident.

We all laugh about it, but it could have been a rock, or a knife. And seriously - some people get away with shit because we let them. Throwing juiceboxes is not okay. Surfing porn on a shared computer in shared space is not okay.

You did the right thing.

9. While people have the right to look at porn
I'm not sure they have the right to use your computers to do so. They are using up computer access that could be used by someone who is there looking for job/job training etc.

you get a big  from me.

13. I am positive that I am going to
PRAISE you.

The job center is for searching jobs. Not looking at porno or stocks or how to ruin other peoples' lives. That's what the library is for. It is said that people looking for jobs should go to these places looking appropriate as well. What that guy did was not appropriate, and probably won't ever get a job. Unless he's got a silver tongue and likely become a manager and fire good people...

I know people who work at those job center places, and they've got the most interesting stories to tell.

I'm glad the cops came in before things got any worse. I hope you're doing okay; the hit wasn't too hard.

:pals:

17. You did the right thing.
If a person is willing to get physically abusive towards you in the Job Centre then it is likely that he would be physically abusive against others.

You have a right to work in a safe environment - he did not have a right to surf porn sites in a job centre.

20. Of course you acted appropriately!
And you should press charges! You should feel safe in your work environment! Here in Nashville I can't even access my hotmail account at the public library because some dirtbag used msn to access porn. Now msn is completely blocked, which I think is a dumb overreaction. (Not that I have a problem with porn, some of my, um, best friends have been known to partake.) But there should be some filters available to help manage this apparently common problem, aren't there? Any job seekers clever enough to bypass 'em ought to be primo job candidates (or irredeemable scum  ).

In fact, I don't see how you had any choice but to ask the guy to get off the 'puter, and to call the cops when it got physical.

You'll get no attacks from me. Sympathy a-plenty, but no attacks.

Are you hurt? Either way, I hope you feel better soon.

OMG - I am so sorry that this happened. Are you okay? You did what you had to do and I don't blame you one bit. This person knew the rules about porn at work. It is not your fault.

:pals:

Oh - and BTW - that person should probably get a job like mine...I have now been asked to "research" porn on the internet and one website I visited had nipples as the buttons to click....:yoiks: I am sure the people approaching my little cubicle were a bit surprised....
