Ever Write Something On DU You Regret
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 11:52 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I try to be civil and peaceful ...I try very hard to be civil and peaceful...But I'm a lousy pacifist...If someone attacks me , physically or verbally, I'm going to attack them back ten times as hard...

What is the appropriate response when you feel you are (personally) attacked here or any place else on the internet?

If you say hit the "alert" button I can respect that but some attacks are not worthy of a deletion but they are worthy of a response...

8. Quite honestly, most of the time, they aren't worthy of a response
I mean, if someone feels the need to argue their case by flinging personal attacks, they've pretty much lost the debate.

When I do reply to them, I tend to do it in a calm, rational and very logical way because it highlights the foam-flecked hysteria of their post so nicely.

10. I've posted regarding things I feel are unfortunately potentialities due to trends.
Sometimes I'm very wrong, and this is because trends change. I can't tell you how happy I am when I'm wrong.

Sometimes enough attention on a subject will change it.

So think good thoughts regarding the approaching world economy, in which the US is not really a first-line player. Some of our capitalists are, but that's not all of us, is it.

As with most forums or other venues. My inconsistency is inevitable, and to suggest otherwise would be a cardinal sin. :)

Doesn't mean I shouldn't make mistakes or misperceptions, but they do happen.

21. Nothing I regret, per se....
but there have been a few times that I wish I hadn't posted my opinion on something because it ultimately became flame bait. There are some here that really have little tolerance for a point of view different from their own. Intelligent discussion and good-natured arguements are fine- I've given some issues deeper thought because of a good arguement. However, "I think this random subject is good, and if you don't agree with me then you're obviously a f***ing idiot/republican/freeper/etc..." kind of banter is just pathetic.

to sit around and take all that was coming at me in responce. My point wasn't off base..the way I went about making my point was. So I stuck around and clarified for an afternoon. I felt I owed the DU that much at least.

30. Definitely!
I got into a huge flamewar back in 2004 when I started a very angry thread with a lot of foul language about something that had happened to myself and others on DU. I think I made a valid point, but I wish I had made it in a more calm, well-thought-out manner. A lot of the time, I tend to give WAY too much personal information, but that's because I guess I feel comfortable here and am fairly anonymous. Lsst week, I had sort of a personal meltdown when I was starting a thread and wrote some things that would have made people wonder about my sanity! Luckily, I used the "edit" feature in time to delete the thread.

31. Not too often but very recently I was involved in a long thread
that was started out of some understandable frustration, but the person clearly was missing some vital information and was angry. Most of the replies to the OP were in opposition, most were evenhanded, a few were kind of mean. It eventually got locked. The next day somebody posted a totally unrelated topic but it lent itself to a "humorous" response that referenced the previous locked discussion. So I couldn't resist. Apparently as I was writing this smart ass reply the original poster from the locked discussion posted a response to this topic. My snarky comment showed up right under it about 10 seconds later. OOOPS.

32. Nope,

...not really. I think maybe a couple of times I may have been too open, but when I told that person to pull the stick out of their ass....I meant every word.

There was one post I responded too even though I really didn't like the OP but I felt bad because a family member was ill. I do sorta regret that one because that person wouldn't spit on many DUers if they were on fire.

Cheers

33. I've never regretted anything I haven't posted here
I keep hearing these references to stuff in GD getting personal but I haven't experienced that much, probably because I don't take debate personally, it's totally a mental thing with me, that I enjoy. I could probably spend all day in GD debating but the truth is I know it's a waste of time, and I can't justify it. But if we are debating ideas, even if someone is spewing profanity at me in one response after the other it doesn't affect me for some reason, if anything, it makes me calmer when the other person starts to lose control. Personal stuff is another matter; when I feel someone is coming after me personally I usually just don't respond. There is this archaic concept of "beneath one's dignity to respond to" that feels like the right tactic for me, even though that is kind of out of step in the days of ghetto-fabulousness when everyone is supposed to want to get into the trashy 'eff you' kind of sparring. Part of the reason I hold back is because I know the redneck in me will come out and I will end up saying something I regret, that I might owe an apology for, so I'd rather refrain. Plus I think silence is the best response; when someone who is attacking me personally is willing to hang their hiney out for the whole world to see, and show just how vile they are capable of being, sometimes I think it's best to step back and let the focus be on that. If I jump in there and duke it out with 'em, that is just sinking to their level.
