1. Boric acid and condensed milk, seriously.
Make little boric acid "cookies" with the milk and put them all over the place.

8. Check out this factsheet
We've had a dog eat one, and I also know someone who had a dog eat one. We largely used them "under" stuff like the couch the tv, the stove and fridge. Places the pups can't get to.

29. Absolutely agree.
Absolutely agree. My parents had used it, I've used it and recommenced it to others who have used it-- all with success.

Although we simply made small mounds of the powder and placed them in nooks and crannies the dogs couldn't get to.

47. It is poisonous
if you use this method and a cat or dog eats it they will drop dead... You can however take a small container (like a margarine cup) - Put the boric acid and milk concoction in, put the lid on it, cut some little doors around the base big enough for the roaches to get in .... This also works with ant infestation but substitute the milk with corn syrup.

There isn't anything much you can do about them. The pros can come in and keep the population down a bit, but they can never totally get rid of them.

Texas roaches are 3" long, they fly and they are carnivorous (they BITE and DRAW BLOOD when they do).

10. Roach Motels.
They'll keep down the population but probably won't eliminate them because you're in a multi-unit building.

Black Flag Roach Motels are attractant glue traps and rated safe around kids and pets. I don't know what the lure is but it's not a pesticide.

11. They are attracted to standing water.
We had a leak under our bathroom sink and didn't know it for awhile, but all these roaches started popping up.

Once we discovered the leak and had it fixed, I haven't seen any more roaches.

Good luck with your trouble!

12. Demand that the building's owner get someone over there to
de-bug the place.

That happened to me in a place I lived in in Texas. Fuckers were all over the place, and it was practically sterile. My neighbors were having the same problem. We finally banded together and demanded that the building's owner do something, or we would, and deduct the cost from our rent. He had someone out there the next day.

39. they are cute to watch but they are horrible as a pest infestation
trust me.

They get into everything, the worst being the oven insulation - and it stinks every time you try to bake something. They chew holes in critical items you care about like important papers, wiring, stored rugs or other textiles, and of course love tochew holes in your favorite underwear.

I am so sick of rodents. I am battling a packrat out on one porch right now - it learned to trip the rat trap before taking the bait so now I am feeding it to get it used to a live animal trap before I set it to "catch" then I will have to deal with it when I do catch it.:grr: :nuke:

The cat does what she can with the mice, but this rat is huge and pretty damn arrogant. I think she is afraid of it. Or maybe it paid her off, I don't' know.

18. no, it's not your housekeeping skills
sometimes it can be about other people in the building.

There used to be a product called "Roach-Pruf" which I think was basically boric acid. I don't know if it's still sold or not.

You can put it behind cabinets and under appliances, etc.

Check w/ your vet about whether or not it will harm your family pets.

run down place years ago and the place was FILLED with roaches- even in the walls! We ripped the place apart and pored a thin line (~1/8" wide) boric acid all along the floor under the baseboards, behind the stove and kitchen cabinets etc. and, we NEVER saw a single roach after that. It really works, and you don't need to have the place sprayed.

And, btw, this was in a building of condos so, I suppose many of the other owners also had problems.
Good Luck!

...periodic insecticide treatment throughout the building-- you cannot keep one apartment free of roaches unless it's hermetically sealed from the rest of the building. Get your landlord to contract for building-wide quarterly treatments at the very least, or start looking for somewhere else to live. The roaches will win every time, I'm afraid.

22. Boric Acid is your friend
Trust me, I live in an apartment and roaches are just a normal part of apartment life

With moving, I've been using a ton of boric acid as I pack. I put the BA in the box and then line the box with garbage bags.

BTW - roaches are attracted to carboard too. If they are primarily in your kitchen then put anything and everything into ziploc bags and get rid of any cardboard boxed products you might have.

27. We were infested with roaches over the summer, huge ones
Water bugs can come up through your drains, so we started putting mesh covers over drains with softballs to weight them down.

We also demanded that our landlord plug up all the holes and cracks along the floor and behind the sink.

Finally, we had the building send in an exterminator. With pets I guess that's not an option, but we've only seen a couple over the last few weeks.

I still have post traumatic stress tho - if I see something move out of the corner of my eye I jump, and sometimes I have nightmares of bugs crawling over me.

35. We were ready to move, my GF like has horrible fear of them
She's lived in the apartment for ten years and never had a problem until last year they tore up the basement while doing construction on the building. Last summer it was nice, this year it was roaches. I think I almost preferred the mice, something incredibly vile about roaches -

Good luck! I hope it gets better.

In another apartment I lived in we had a problem with the smaller variety and we used boric acid and one of those electronic gizmos and it seemed to work

34. They are hard to get rid of.
Of course it isn't your fault. When you have people living in close proximity to one another all it takes is one slob to infest the entire building. Could you board the animals for a couple of days, go on a mini vacation and bomb the place? It might suppress them for a while. The only real way to do it right is to bomb the whole building.

36. I had a wood roach problem during the flooding last month
They live along the rivers, and as the rivers got nearer my house, so did they. Everyone who's lived here for a long time said that they'd stay in the house, even after the rivers fell, if I didn't treat for 'em. I used diatomaceous earth in places the critters (pets) could get to, and boric acid in cracks and crevice-type places they couldn't get to. Seems to have taken care of the problem. I haven't seen any at all in a couple of weeks.

It's been a regular bug-fest around here this summer. I'm eternally grateful for diatomaceous earth!!

37. A suggestion from some New Yorkers I knew. Warning, it's creepy if you don't like roaches.
Of course, if you liked them, you wouldn't have posted ;-)

Take an empty coffee can and rub vaseline around the inside. Put wet coffee grounds on the bottom. Supposedly, they love the grounds. And now they can't get out.

The downside is that it won't get rid of all of them, and if it works (never tried it), you'll end up with a seething can full of roaches. That's one for youtube...

And I'm suprised that no one has made a "Joe's Apartment" reference. There is was, it's in my contract.
