What can you bring carry on onto an airplane?
I am flying for the first time in years. It's just a one night trip. I'd like to bring my hygeine bag with toothpaste, floss, deodorant, lotion, toothbrush, contact lens solution and comb... that's it. Can I? What about a bottle of water?

1. I believe that there was a similar question to yours, posted here recently.
If you can search for it (have to be a donor, shame on me, I'm not).

I don't know if they'll prevent you from bringing on a bottle of water, but I highly recommend it, as you've probably already learned. Also, ear plugs for when you get to altitude. What an amazing fatigue-reducer that is! Consider the amount of noise in a plane, then remember that you're exposed to it for several hours, in some cases. It can be reduced!

Hope this helps even a little. Good luck. I hope someone has a link to that thread...

2. The quantity of each liquid item is limited. (Is it 3 ounces or less?)

Drug stores sell specailly sized bottles for liquids. You have to put the liquid containers in a clear ziplock bag.

12. I know! I haven't flown since the liquid rules came into being!
I did see an interesting display at the Atlanta airport about items you couldn't carry on. These included Drano, bleach, fire logs and chainsaws.

4. TSA link: what can I bring? :
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

What Can I Bring?
On Tuesday, September 26, 2006, TSA adjusted the ban on liquids, gels, and aerosols.

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

prohibited items brochure
(pdf, 116kb)
The following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols carried through security checkpoints.

All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.
There are exceptions for baby formula, breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

7. The 3-1-1 rule
Each person can carry on one 1-quart plastic bag containing only 3 oz bottles of liquids and gels.

So, you can carry on as many 3 oz containers as you can fit in a 1 quart plastic bag. Only one bag.

Sucks, don't it?

10. Since the rest can be in checked baggage, I don't see why this is really a problem
Other than that it's a stupid rule to begin with and will actually do NOTHING to prevent another attack.

11. I agree.
I don't claim to agree with the rule, even to see how it makes any sense. I just know that it's the rule, and when I flew this summer, they were enforcing it. In fact, they were handing out 1 qt bags to people in line, but made sure each person only got one bag.

Such idiocy!!

9.  A 9mm pistol is always nice.
I think it has to be less than 3 ounces, though.

13. any damn thing you want, it's free country isn't it?
May I suggest guns, knives, plastic explosives, and be daring - bring FOUR ounces of liquid. In a six ounce container. Put it in a 44 gallon trash bag.

Then proclaim loudly when you get hassled "What, do I look like a fucking terrorist?"
