I've solved the mystery that is GD

If you are unrelentingly kind and understanding, you get those qualities back. People who reflexively attack your position full-force with all the underhanded tactics in regular use on these boards back off a bit, and you each find that there is a lot of common ground between the opposing sides.

Once this happens, you each admit that the issues are more complex than the black & white exclusive caricatures of the opposing positions. Nuance is recognized, and the purposed misinterpretations and personal attacks fade away.

Then nobody replies to you, because all-out warfare between two extreme positions that show complete contempt for each other is waaaay more interesting stuff, and you relapse back into that mode of thinking because it's way more exciting and lots of people will respond.

same is true of the lounge, only the nasty stuff is done in pm's, while acting magnanimous in the 'public' part of DU. I think 95% of this internet forum stuff is projection and unresolved issues. I find myself posting in GD sometimes just to take the piss out of the right of center folks...which isn't really the point of the whole deal.

waiting to pounce on anything at all, however insignificant, to make themselves

Is that what it's about? I have to admit, I've learned a lot in a short time and I love how
informative this site is. In fact, if you follow every link, it can take hours before you pull
yourself away from the screen. The dustballs are rolling around in my house and bumping
into each other. I have bilateral carpal tunnel to beat the band and my hips are spreading
like Silly Putty near a radiator.
