All Summer long the Red Sox nation has been pretty cocky
And only a few short weeks ago I was pounded for stating that the Sox would fold like a lawn chair before the season was over.

We, the fans of the NY Yankees, never lost hope. As of this minute, we are behind in the Division by ONE and ONE HALF GAMES and lead in the chase for the League wild card..

We are Yankee fans, hope ALWAYS springs eternal.

See ya in October

39. Not by a long shot.
Not even the biggest choke job in Sox history. That'd be the "Boston Massacre" of 1978, at the end of which Bucky Dent acquired a new middle name, with the initial "F".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankees-Red_Sox_rivalry#1961_-_1980:_Fisk_vs._Munson_and_Bucky_Dent

September 10, 1978: The Yankees complete a four-game sweep at Fenway Park to tie the Red Sox atop the AL East, completing a 14-game comeback over the course of two months. New York outscores Boston 42-9 during the series, which becomes known as the "Boston Massacre."

October 2, 1978: The Red Sox and Yankees play a one-game playoff at Fenway Park for the American League East title. Bucky Dent hits a three-run home run over the Green Monster to give the Yankees the lead for good in the seventh inning. The Yankees go on to win their 32nd American League pennant and 22nd World Series title.

Other strong contenders for all-time choke job would be the '64 Phillies, and "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillies#.22Phold.22_of_1964

During 1962 and 1963, the Phillies began to climb back to respectability, and throughout the 1964 season, they seemed destined to make it to the World Series, with excellent performances from players such as rookie third baseman Dick Allen (called "Richie" in the news media of the time), starters Jim Bunning (obtained from the Detroit Tigers at the start of the season to shore up the pitching staff) and Chris Short, and star right fielder Johnny Callison. TV Guide went to press with a World Series preview that featured a photo of Connie Mack Stadium. However, from a 6½-game lead on the Cincinnati Reds with 12 games remaining in the season, Philadelphia collapsed in a 10-game losing streak (the first seven played at home). The crucial series came when the now second-place Phillies traveled to St. Louis to play the Cardinals after their losing home stand. They dropped the first game of the series to Bob Gibson by a 5-1 score, their eighth loss in a row, dropping them to third place. The Cardinals would sweep the three-game set and assume first place for good.

During that losing streak, there was a reference to "the ghost(?) of 1950," recalling that the 1950 Phillies had barely hung on to win the pennant. The 1964 Phillies managed to win their last two and held onto the hope of a tie with the Cardinals and Reds. The Cardinals had also stumbled, losing the first two in their final series to the lowly Mets. Had the Cardinals lost their final game, the resulting three-way tie would have forced an unprecedented "round-robin" playoff for the league title. That did not materialize though, as the Cardinals salvaged that last game against the Mets, to take the pennant (their first since 1946) with no playoff. The legendary choke would vilify Mauch (who was criticized for his handling of the pitching rotation) and haunt Philadelphia fans for years to come.

The "Phold," as it is known, is one of the most notable collapses in sports history, surmounted only by the Brooklyn Dodgers' memorable 13½-game fall to the New York Giants in 1951, and by the Boston Red Sox' loss of a 14-game lead to the New York Yankees in 1978. The Phillies remained competitive through the 1960s, but sank to the bottom of the standings by the start of the 1970s.

67. That would be the '64 Phillies
They led by 6 1/2 games with 12 to play, lost 10 straight and finished a game behind St. Louis.

11. That's the one.
It didn't help morale around these parts that the Rockies went on to lose 8 straight games after that series, but what a joy that series was for us Rockies fans... One of the few joys we have had from this franchise.

19. Thanks, but my teams here give me enough stress...
Rockies, winning and losing, highs and lows, horrendously incompetent ownership...

Broncos, playing like crap only to win in heart-attack, late-field goal fashion...

Buffaloes, winning the opener and providing a tease of the future before losing badly to Arizona State and facing offensive futility against Florida State...

Nuggets, getting to the playoffs in... What, 4 consecutive years? only to win a combined 4 games and lose every.single.series.

Avalanche, finally having their long playoff streak snapped, going from contenders to wannabes in the space of 18 months...

Sigh. I love every last one of my teams, but they can be hard to watch sometimes!

BTW, if you check my posts this summer you will see that I was already having nightmares of a repeat of 1978.

I remember where I was when Bobby Kennedy and MLK were shot.

And I know exactly where I was when Bucky F. Dent hit the fucking homer over the green monster - Moosehead Pub in Torrington CT.

The Dodgers and Mets spend gazillions too

The Dodgers spend 56% what the Yanks spend, the Mets spend 60%.

The average difference between what the Yanks spend and the Dodgers/Mets is more than the entire payrolls of half the league!

Just think. All that money and nothing to show for it this century.

27. What a johny-come-lately!
Real Red Sox fans are never ever cocky! We do, however, enjoy the moment, because we remember, and take nothing for granted! '67, '75, '78, '86, '03, and yes '04! I actually watched those games, and lived and died pitch to pitch, batter to batter. There is no sense of entitlement in RSN, just a desire to see a well-executed hit-and-run and a timely sacrifice fly. I could go on and on but I'll leave you with this thought - in this century the Yankees have won the AL East every year, and the Red Sox have one World Series title to the Yankee's none. Get used to it!

"We are Yankee fans, conceit ALWAYS springs eternal."

I've seen other Yankees fans on DU get all excited with every little Yankees surge in the standings this year, only to see them fade back - right when they seem to be on the verge of something special...

Even if they don't win the division, it at least seems unlikely that they'll lose the wild card now.

I just hope they didn't blow their load in catching up in both races.

The best outcome for MLB and Faux Sprots is a NY-LA World Series because those are the biggest teevee markets. I'm a Dodgers fan until death, but not for the sake of the corporate masters.

Selig and Faux can go fuck each other with the splintered end of a broken fungo bat.
