Scented candles. I love them, but now they're making so many that smell like food!

Pies...fruits..whatever.

I bought one called "Spice Cupboard" some time ago. Big mistake! I can only burn it after I've had a big meal. Otherwise, it makes me crave spice cookies or gingerbread.

1. I get only the floral scents
I also love scented candles. I generally go for lilac and lavendar.
Do you have a favorite brand?

2. I like Yankee candles. (In spite of the name! :-) )

I have to say, I haven't tried many brands. You?

4. Yankee Candles are one of my favorites too
Unfortunately, I don't usually shop where they are sold. I buy other candles if they say they are natural, made with essential oils.
Burn, baby, burn!! ;)

3. My MIL bought me a candle called Vanilla Cream.
My husband had it lit one day while I was at the store, and I came home and asked him if he had been making smores while I was gone. It smelled just like burned marshmallows.

I have also asked guests what kind of coffee they were drinking only to find out it was the candle.

It never fails to make me want something sweet and vanilla-y.

5. The food candles I sometimes burn
in the evening in the kitchen when the day is done.

Making your own candles is pretty cheap too. I can't believe how much scented candles cost now. :crazy;

along with Clean Cotton, both from Yankee Candle.

7. Can't stand 'em!
They don't make me hungry at all -- I think most of them are cloying and nauseating, especially the ones that smell like vanilla or fruit. The smell is too overpoweringly sweet. Yuk. The only scented candles that don't make me want to hurl are the pine and eucalyptus ones.

8. Everything these days seems designed to smell like dessert
Or a fruit salad. I'm fond of sandalwood and light floral scents, but all I seem to find is Strawberry/Kiwi, Vanilla/Orange, Spiced Apple/Peppermint, Lime/Coconut, etc. It's not just candles - it's soap, shampoo, hand lotion and other toiletries. They should be accompanied by a paper parasol or a dollop or whipped cream.

I'll stick with the incense from the health food store, thanks. Those smells are fine in the kitchen, not so great in the bedroom.

13. Even makup smells like dessert now.
Jessica Simpson has a whole line. And Philosophy makes bath gel, shampoo, etc in a variety of foodie scents, including Cinnamon Buns.

9. My mom had a sugar-cookie scented one
My brother lit it one day and when she got home from work she started yelling at him "Matt! How could you! Those smell so good and I'm on a diet!!"

She didn't realize it was the candle. :D

14. Be wary of the scented candles....
The cheap ones have a lot of heavier waxes and oils in them that don't burn well. These materials turn into soot and deposit all over your house, once they've been sucked into the ventilation (the filters don't usually trap everything). Even the good candles can do this if the wick isn't trimmed properly.

16. I try to keep the wick trimmed short so it isn't such a big flame.
ANything else that needs to be done?

17. Just keep trimming and watch for signs of soot....
your dust rag turning black when you dust (and you don't live near a coal mine) is a good warning sign.
