Poll question: Was this a "slam"?
A few weeks ago my wife and I were able to got out to dinner at a rather high falootin' place.

At the table next to us were 4 well-to-do ladies. At some point one of them gave another one a book of pictures, pictures of their friends' gardens. I couldn't help overhearing this. So finally the recipient says to the giver, "Thank you very much for this."

and the giver says, "Oh yes I saw it and thought of what you could do with your place"

3. Shoney's is not 'high falootin'
:eyes:

I think it depends. If the gift giver was a designer and the recipient had been asking for advice, then no. Otherwise, maybe.

How's that for waffling?

5. Hard to tell without more info.
What if the recipient had recently been telling
her friends that she hated her garden, and was
looking for ideas to completely re-do it?

Pictures of their friends' gardens -- it is a hint that she is non-conforming and starting to bring them down.
If it were a book of gardens in general, I would have doubts and would give the gift-giver the benefit of the doubt.
