2. Fun!
I live not far from the town where "The Birds" was filmed (Bodega Bay) and even today there are a few things that haven't changed since then... weird deja vu when you recognize a building or an angle of an outside shot.

5. Did you know they're making a Birds remake?
http://imdb.com/title/tt0884788/

Why, oh why do they feel the need to do things like this?

6. I didn't know

...and I really don't see how they could improve on the original.

Thanks for the link :toast:

7. They can use supersonic CGI birds that explode
None of that annoying training of real birds. They will probably include a blatant enviro-message, as opposed to Hitch's subtle one.

In case you don't know the story, they taught a bunch of seagulls that if they landed on a person's head, they'd get a treat. That's how a lot of shots were done. If you keep this in mind, you'll see that in the movie, particularly the party scene, they are just trying to land on people's heads. Really well done stuff, there.

Birds have short memories, and forget their tricks quickly. However, when the shooting was done, they just let the gulls go free, and for a few days there were reports of gulls down at the beach which would mysteriously land on people's heads.

8. I didn't know that

...I never would have thought you could train a seagull to do anything.

I wonder if we could train one to poop on *.

I drove through a parking lot today filled with seagulls, not one got out of the way. I was zig-zagging around them and I stopped to really look at one....those beaks look painful.

Cheers

11. "Psycho" is almost a perfect movie.
There is no finer example of the craft of filmmaking, in my opinion.

16. Not only that,
the story, script, acting, camera work, editing, and background music all work together like in no other movie that I can think of. Everything coalesces into one unforgettable whole. There are so many themes going on all at the same time - greed, voyeurism, secrecy, deceipt, boredom, paranoia and violence - that it stands up to repeated viewings. Hitchcock masterfully keeps the audience in a mild confusion while still propelling the story forward. They just don't make movies this rich and complex very often any more.

18. Agreed, and it's amazing to think that many considered "Psycho" to be cheap and tawdry...
upon its release.
I probably watch it four times a year.

Related note: after many TV viewings of "The Birds", I finally got to see it on a big screen a couple of years ago. I now think that "The Birds" was Hitchcock's exercise in "deliberate artifice" (for lack of a better term):
the obvious back projections
the highly stilted performances
the electronic bird sounds (which sound little like birds)

20. I guess I'll have to give "The Birds" a second chance.
I've only seen it once and it didn't really do that much for me. I didn't find it to be nearly as scary as people said it was. It just didn't make an impression on me. I'll watch it again sometime and see if I can get more out of it. Every time "Psycho" comes on again, even if I pick it up in the middle, I am irresistibly drawn right back into the whole sleazy atmosphere all over again. To me the mark of a great film is that you can watch it many times without losing interest, even when you know the whole story.
