2. Ah, I see highway 14 over on the Washington side
Many is the time that I have blasted my way down that highway at 80+ mph.

One of the amazing things about the Columbia River and the gorge is that when the Cascades started to rise 7 million years ago, the Columbia River was able to maintain its path to the ocean instead of being diverted. The gorge is the result of a seven million year battle between water and rock.

3. My dear Radio_Lady...
That's a beautiful picture...

It reminds me of the years I lived in Richland as a child...

The local hills looked much like these...

Long ago...far away...

5. Not sure where Richland is! California? Oregon? Inquiring minds want to know.
OT: Thanks so much for the telephone call. I really enjoyed speaking to you and perhaps we can really meet in person sometime. There's hope! I have that Uncle Arthur on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Would love to see Manhattan Beach, CA. I only had a bicycle in Westwood Village when I went to U.C.L.A. Lots of good that did me on the freeways that existed then!

***Peace, Love, and Happiness,

PS. You're the first to see my new signature. We used it on a children's TV show with a three finger hand salute. My former co-host has passed away, and I think he'd get a kick out of it if he knew. Maybe he does know...

8. Richland is in Washington...
It was, when I lived there in the fifties, a GE town. Hanford is nearby...where all the secret stuff went on.

The town is at the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers, IIRC...

4. I wish I could be out there too
The scenery is breathtaking. I am stuck in the Midwest where we do not have scenes like that.

Flat, damp, and hot. Also lush, green, and romantic, especially the ocean.

The highest place you could get to was the middle of the MacArthur Causeway or the Broad Causeway, connecting Miami to Miami Beach to see out just a little bit. That was before there were tall buildings in the downtown area.

Me? I love the mountains and the desert, but Portland is quite beautiful. Perhaps you can visit here sometime. I hope so. Keep your eyes open for my husband's pictorial presentation Portland to Pendleton, Oregon. I'll try to post it this weekend.

Peace, Love, and Happiness,

7. Breathtaking
I love these western mountains - I'm from the east where the mountains are old and have soft curves. The mountains out here just rear up and climb - gorgeous.

11. Yes, I was born in Pennsylvania and Al was born in Massachusetts.
We lived all of our lives on the East Coast.

So the soft curves of the Adirondacks, the Poconos, the Catskills, the White Mountains (NH) and other Eastern mountains were our friends. I am also in awe of Mt. Washington, Mt. Mitchell, and Mt. Okemo, Vermont. I spent one lovely summer to winter in 1970, living near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Hendersonville, NC.

The first time we visited Portland, I was shocked by the view of Mt. Hood just outside the plane. It was a clear September day, and I felt I could reach out and touch it. Now we see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Baker, and the Three Sisters.

We had one chance to see Alaska two years ago. We were in Anchorage and had just a small window of opportunity to see Denali (Mt. McKinley). I encourage my husband to take a small plane ride around the mountain.

Regrettably, we drove to Talkeetna -- and the mountain was fogged in. No flights that day. We had a few beers, listened to their cute little radio station, enjoyed a leisurely lunch and shopped for T-shirts.

Maybe next time.

ON EDIT: The new movie "Into the Wild" (opens on October 5th here in Portland) features absolutely beautiful photography of mountainous regions. Haven't checked to see if Canada stood in for Alaska, but the natural pictures of this primal and sensual land is not to be missed.
