Meet Tovah - our new pup (dial-up warning)
We did it - found and adopted a pup. Found her at shelter about an hour south of us. They said she was found wandering the roads this past Thursday, they are guessing she's 10 weeks old, however, because of her teeth we're thinking she's younger than that maybe 8 weeks... She's some sort of hound, we're in the middle of trying find hound breed pics of pups to try and figure that out

Considering we adopted her on Yom Kippur - we named her Tovah, which in Hebrew means "good".

She hasn't been checked out by a vet, this shelter doesn't have one readily available. She seems alert, eating well, playing, peeing/pooping good - although we are a bit concerned over what seems to be a really big belly... They did give her one set of shots and a de-worming - we'll be calling our vet tomorrrow to get her in ASAP for a full check-up.

here's some pics:

4. here's the kicker regarding the shelter adoption process
we've been going through various hurdles filling out adoption applications, pre-screening adoption applications, providing references and all sorts of information which makes breaking into Fort Knox seem alot easier

last weekend we helped a neighbor adopt a dog from our local SPCA - took close to 2-hours to fill out the paperwork, go through an interview process and even a background check through their computer database. this a\was at our country SPCA.

so when we went to another county's SPCA we expected the same level of scrutiny and examination. We get to the shelter, mention we saw Tovah on their website and was she still available? We go into the kennel area, they take the pup out and we check her over, decide to adopt.

We are led out to the front office, given 1 form to fill out which asked about 10 basic questions (yes/no check boxes) - no references, no interview, no third-degree under a naked light-bulb. paid the adoption fee, and walked out - 20 minutes at the most...

amazing....

5. she's precious! and part beagle is my guess
that bloated tummy is probably worms and her eating like a little pig after being homeless for a while

beagle/dalmatian cross is my guess

6. not beagle/dalmation
most likely english pointer as she does have "freckles" on her skin - not fur and she more resembles pointers based on pics of pups around the same age

she may even be younger than 8 weeks - saw one pic of a 6-week old that looks about her size

regarding looking bloated - the bloating would reduce or disappear in size after pooping if it was from pigging out, but it doesn't. She's not uncomfortable, nor is she exhibting any signs of being in distress i.e. licking butt, crying when picked up, tender belly.

most likely worms, she was only at the shelter 2 days and they gave her a routine over-the-counter med for worms - so I'm guessing the meds weren't the right kind or not long enough treatment

to the vet as soon as we can get her in for appointment - thankfully vet has evening appointments on Monday

28. i would say pointer is a good guess, but her feet aren't looking like she's
gonna get to be a big girl, that's why I'm thinking a smaller breed

8. OMG! Tovah looks almost identical to our dog Vicki!
Edited on Sun Sep-23-07 06:38 AM by NewWaveChick1981
:hi: :bounce: Tovah's adorable! :D Vicki is a Jack Russell/Bird Dog/pointer mix, and Tovah looks like she's got those traits too---right down to the spots on her tummy! :) Tovah might also have some beagle in her, from what she looks like.

If Tovah's anything like Vicki, she'll be a handful of dynamite. :P Vicki learned to counter surf (i.e. stand on her hind legs and pull herself along our kitchen counters to explore) at a fairly early age, and she's gotten herself in trouble more than once. We got her when she was 8 weeks old, and she's 4 1/2 years old now. She's matured nicely and is one hell of a dog! :D

Keep us posted on your sweetie. She's going to make a great dog for you! :)

On edit: Vicki is about 48 lbs. fully grown. She's tall and lanky. Except for the tummy, she looked just like Tovah when we adopted her. :)

...Tovah's such an unusual mix that people will be amazed when they see her. You don't see that particular mix very often, and when people see Vicki, they can't help but ooh and aah. :)

16. we had to run out to pet store last night
to get her a collar, and few other items. took her along with us so we could size the collar correctly and we did get a few oohs-ahhs...

not sure if it was from her looks or the fact she's a baby - be it baby humans or baby animals, they all have that magic which turns normal, mature adults into babbling idiots.. :D

9. for tovah
Dear God, you have given us care over all living things; protect and bless the animals who give us companionship and delight, make us their true friends and worthy companions. Amen.

Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
--Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
--Franciscan prayer

Eovah, may you be blessed in the name of the Holy One who created you, and may you and radfringe and family enjoy life together and care for one another in peace.

I am soooo happy for you and your family!

I had a "home visit" with a 10 lb rat terrier and her foster mommy yesterday - and guess what?!

SHE STAYED! Her name is Egypt and I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to upload DH's camera. Looks like Yom Kippur was a good day for all...

15. congrats!!! have fun with the rat TERRORia
the original meaning of terrier refers to a dog that goes to ground - meaning they hunt out critters in their burrows - but after living with a chihuahua/terrier mix and an Airedale terrier - I'm convinced that it really means is TERROR... :) high energy and into everything...

btw: the docking of tails on terriers is meant to strengthen the tail and provide a "handle" for the owner to grab onto if the dog needs to be hauled out of a hole

17. Ditto on the terror part
When we got ours-inherited when Donna's mother passed-she was an only dog. We had 8 other dogs at the time and she wasn't real good at sharing. She learned the hard way that she wasn't the alpha or even the beta. When she got mad, she would shred whatever she could get her teeth into. In the last couple of years she's calmed down quite a bit.

23. unfortunately she smells like kennel
needs a bath, but we're waiting until after the vet visit tomorrow, don't want to stress her our too much

she's still small enough to bathe in the sink, unlike our greyhounds who either get a bath outside or I have to get into the tub/shower with them

little belly on her though. Maybe she had been well fed up to when she got lost, and wasn't lost too long. Looks like some beagle in that face.

May she live up to her name. There will be times during her puppy hood when you wonder WHY you named her Tovah, but hopefully those will be few and far between.

Tovah was sleeping on the bed, our 5yr old greyhound - Mint hops up on the bed too and settles right down.

At one point Mint leans over and starts sniffing Tovah. Tovah slightly opens one eye and gives out a very quiet Grrrrrr.... Mint jerks back and looks at us as if to say "whadda I do?"

meanwhile - Tovah is one smart puppy. We started working with her on sit and down and she's catching on already. She's doing fairly well on "come", but only in the house. We haven't pushed that command outside as of yet because we want her to get use to being on a leash (she doesn't like it but she's only been exposed to being leashed for 1 day - can't expect miracles). Tonight we'll take her to the run, and armed with some treats start working on that command.

on edit: regarding house training, we are using the glued-to-hip method. Working good, no "accidents" in the house, but it's only been around 1 1/2 days. again - we are not expecting miracles, started this morning with the "gotta go out" cue, snap on her leash and out the door followed by oodles of praise for doing her business...
