Offer me suggestions for time-killing.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY miss reprehensor.

It's been a little over a week since he left me up here all alone. I got the dog, I got the cat, and I've got a great new job, but I miss mah hunny. What should I do to keep myself busy while I wait for him to sell the house and get his butt up here?

:dilemma:

1. Knit????
No really....
Maybe you should start looking into clubs or groups
you two can join. So you get to know the people and your new town.
That way when he finally comes "home" you can show him around!!!!

Learn where the stores are and the shortcuts.... things like that

I love new adventures!!!

Good luck and have fun

3. I'm doing some looking around.
Get this: I don't have the patience for sewing or knitting, but I can plant myself in front of a microfilm reader for an entire day and be happy as a clam.

I'm working on my book and all, but I knew DUers would come up with some interesting answers. Some which will probably be deleted!

25. It's a genealogy of my Smith family...
all the information I have found about all the members from about 1783 forward.

Sort of little mini bios of each person, taken from census records, birth, death and marriage records, homestead paperwork, military records, social histories of the areas where they lived, family remembrances and letters that still exist, lots and lots of photographs, and obituaries.

I have about 750 pages so far. It's my life's work, but I've only been at it for two years, so I plan on living an EXTRA long time!

DU's own "Todd in Cheesecurdistan" made it up, and it was so hilarious, I HAD to start using it!

Aaaahhhhh retail. It has its charms and its hellish qualities, but there is nothing like that first day back on your feet all day to make you hate all mankind. I did it for many years in my record store days.

Unfortunately, I'll never be able to work retail again for extra cash as the MS would make it impossible. Enjoy it while you're able!

Here were my suggestions...

Hi Son!

Thanks for replying so soon!

Sorry to hear you're bored but at least you're being paid well, meals included!
Can't beat that! Get some board games and some books! Build a model ship or airplane
or house! Write and Play music! Do you have an internet connection? Surf the net!
Read some free online books. Buy a camera and take some pictures...get creative!
Paint a picture! Write a book about your experiences in Iraq. Play online chess.
Make a video!

11. String Theory
Don't ask me why, but I've found studying the math of theoretical physics in general, and string/M theory in particular, to be a fantastic distraction at this time of my life, when there are some very painful things going on around me.

Even if I don't understand the math entirely, I absorb enough to get the gist, and it's very satisfying.

Maybe exploration of any difficult science that interests you would be both a great diversion and personally satisfying.

Mike

It's a science, right?

It's actually the reason I moved up here (in addition to voting for Feingold and not having to deal with 100 degree weather for 3 months straight).

I'm working on a book, I just don't want to do it 24 hours straight. :D

We haven't listed the house quite yet. reprehensor is still working through his endless list of honey-do chores that I left him before we're ready.

He's also buying us a St. Joseph statue this week to help the cause along. We're both ex Catholics, so it seemed like the thing to do.

38. No Joes, believe it or not.
However, my dad was a John. :D

And I am often asked while researching if I am related to the The Prophet. Fortunately, many of the Smiths were only the first generation, and married more unusual names. But the trick is finding the married name!

43. Well, the religion founded by the Prophet at least has a great
collection of data for you to search. I grew up in that faith, but drifted away as I grew older. It turned out that I did not possess the gene that made spirituality the least bit important to me.

Are ALL Smiths related?

Good luck with your quest.

44. Not mine!
My Smiths were orignally Schmidts, and were Pennsylvania Dutch. But it will take a lot more detective work to figure out "Ancestor Zero" in Pennsylvania and take it back over to Germany.

It may never happen. I had clues to work from for the other generations I found, but before 1783, I'm flying blind!

Thanks for the luck-- I'll need it!
