9/24 Update On Stacey. She's Hanging In There And I'm Feeling Encouraged.
She's still got a long way to go to get out of danger, but after the horrible day Saturday any signs at all have been positive, not negative. No one still knows whether she's going to make it through this or not, but I'm now FIRMLY of the belief that she will, and that we will have our miracle.

I reread my Saturday post and I had a moment of terror and weakness for sure. It was the end of a very long week in which I was also sick with the same virus (knocked me on my ass all week), had to take care of the kids by myself, travel to and from the city, had no sleep, almost no food for days, and still got some important projects for work done. After the unbelievably rapid deterioration of her health friday and continued deterioration Saturday, combined with the affects of all the prior things I listed, I just simply had no strength, physical or emotional, left to stand firm with. So I kinda regret the negative kind of tone in my Saturday post, as I usually do not break down like that. But it was a rough day, and I kind of needed the tears. But I'm back now to thinking only positive thoughts and will not freak out like that again. I refuse to accept any other circumstance right now than her healing fully and coming home; and she will.

As for the update, she's hanging in there well. After her complete loss of blood pressure from the septic shock on saturday, she has started to maintain it quite well again. They were able to remove one of the bp meds completely (levofed?) which was a huge accomplishment, and this afternoon they cut the other in half (vasopresin?). She's tolerating it well and her BP is great. They are going to try and continue to bring her down off the latter one and hopefully she can maintain her BP on her own again. We'll see tomorrow.

She has had no fever for 48 hours now. I consider that to be a huge positive. Her blood counts are still not where I want them to be, and are unchanged from yesterday (1.7). But on a positive note, they are still at least FINALLY high enough to be able to even begin to fight this virus and other infections off.

They said if she is starting to mount an attack back, that I shouldn't expect just tomorrow for the chest xrays to get better. Though they don't know for sure, and no one knows when things will be getting better, they don't expect even best case to see the chest xrays start looking better for another 2 or 3 days. Her xray results this morning were unchanged, and her lungs are pretty much consumed with pneumonia, obviously. But like I said, it will likely be a few more days, under any scenario, until we see that start clearing up.

The Doc also said they expect her (once again, no one knows anything for sure) to be on the ventilator at least for another week. Then after that, she'd need to remain in the hospital for at least an additional week after that. We still have no way of knowing if she's going to make it through this, but there's better reason to believe now she can, and will. I'm on the side of simply refusing to accept any other alternative, and know she's gonna pull through.

She's responding well to the Patti labelle song I brought for her (New attitude) that is her 'Rocky' kinda theme song. The nurses, who bring her lightly to consciousness each day to check her neurological signs, asked her in the morning if she wanted them to shut it off and she said no. Another nurse tonight told me they asked her last night if she wanted it to keep playing, and she said yes. That made me feel good, cause it made me know that she knows it's there, what it means, why it's playing, and must know that I brought it there for her.

Her kidney numbers were still a bit high (creatinine 1.7) but a point lower than yesterday (1.8). They are keeping an eye on it, but it's not really any huge sort of problem yet. With all the crap being pumped through her right now and all she's going through, it's not hugely unexpected that her numbers are that way. As long as they hold and don't get worse, she should be ok.

So all in all friends, we got a long way to go and there's been no technical improvement of the infection, but things are trending positive. The bp stabilizing and her not having a fever for 48 hours are hugely positive signs that in my opinion are signifying that she's fighting the septic shock and will start mounting a comeback. The docs won't confirm this for me, but that's my take on it and ain't no one gonna take that from me LOL.

One double edged sword kind of note, however, is that the doc I consulted with today was also her main medical oncologist that we're going through the chemo with. Though this will be discussed after this is all said and done, it seemed apparent that she was of the mindset that she did not want to continue with the chemo, and wanted to take her out of the trial. That's a relief in certain ways, but also sad. Though we right now just simply have to make it through this episode, I cannot forget that she still had a highly aggressive and dangerous breast cancer. It scares me that a big tool she had to help prevent it from coming back may now be off the table. Also, dropping out of the trial means she will no longer get an additional drug with promising hopes called lapatanib. Instead, she will just be limited to herceptin. But we'll worry about that when the time comes and it is up to her (Stacey) to make the call. For now, we have far more pressing matters to worry about.

So thank you for hanging in there with me and caring in the ways everyone has. It continues to help me to read all the comments and I'm grateful for each and every comment I've read.

I will continue to post her picture, for all those who are into visualization. Also feel free to let me know if you're sick of new threads and want me to just update via a post in one of the already existing threads. I don't know how people feel about that either way.

From the bottom of my heart thanks to all,

OMC

1. I, for one, am not sick of new threads and I look forward
to seeing you post that she is home with you and your little boys.

Prayers and good thoughts continue to head in your direction, OMC. Our family said the rosary for yours again this evening.

(I don't know why, but when I see her beautiful face, I can't get the song Stacie's Mom has got it going on out of my head. Makes zero sense, I know)

5. Thank you for the update. I am not sick of new threads. In fact,
I head to the Lounge first thing every day to see if you've posted something new.

I continue to hold Stacy in white, healing light, and also, you and your kids.

I know it's so hard right now, but try to remember to take a bit of care for yourself, too.

I am glad to hear that Stacey's condition is showing signs of improvement. I realize that progress and signs of positive improvement can be agonizing slow and conflicting at times but I'm glad the news is encouraging. I will keep directing my thoughts, prayers, positive vibes and any healing energy I can extend to your wife and to you and your family

Thank you for keeping us posted.

Know that she and you and your sons are never far from the thoughts of all of us. I don't what I believe in reference to a "higher power" any more, but I'm a firm believer in positive thoughts making some sort of difference somehow somewhere.

Hang in there. Never be embarassed about showing your care and concern and love for your beautiful family.

I think its easier for us to recognize an update that way anyway. Glad to hear things continue to improve. Wish I knew about more cancer clinical trials (I do new drug R+D but most of the stuff I know about is Lupus and Asthma related).
Since Stacey wants to drop out of her current treatment I will keep an eye out for anything interesting. My company was recently bought out by a large Pharma company so I hear about some really cutting edge stuff sometimes....

27. Just Wanted To Clarify:
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 11:06 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Stace has no idea right now that they will probably advise to stop the chemo, since she is still at most times in a light medicine induced coma type state. When I was talking about the possibility/probability that the chemo was not going to continue, that was of the advisement of her medical oncologist that I was talking with today. Stace has no idea. Like I said in a below reply, I actually kinda think Stace will react in a "fuck that, I'm stickin to it" kind of way, cause I don't think she's going to let anything stop her from seeing things through. We'll see what happens though, and in the end it's her call. Thanks for the reply though. We'd certainly take any news you hear on medical advances!

It is easier for me to get a sense of what's happening when if you post a new thread and believe me, I care very much what is happening. I am so glad to hear that she is stabilizing - it's obvious that she's one hell of a fighter and she's lucky to have someone like you in her corner.

Continued good wishes to you and your lovely wife.

20. Keep the updates coming
We're all so glad that she's turned the corner and improving. Prayers answered, for sure. You have everyone here rooting for you. When we didn't get an update, we killed time watching your wedding video on You Tube :D

You don't owe any explanations for the stress you've been under. Your reaction was expected and normal for what you were going through.

As each day passes her immune system is bouncing back from the chemo so there can only be improvement ahead. If she was in the trial protocol 07013 (I peeked at the clinical trials page) with dose dense taxotere & AC plus lapatinib AND Hereceptin, that's a LOT of adjuvant treatment. :nuke: :scared: After all she's had so far, switching to Herceptin only is still more than adequate. Adding just Herceptin to adjuvant therapy decreases risk of recurrence by a huge amount.

So wonderful she's enjoying the music you brought her. Hang in there and she'll be home with you before you know it. :grouphug:

25. Yes, That Appears To Be The Trial She Is In.
And though it is a lot of treatment, we also were excited that she was going to be able to have every tool available to her to make sure it never comes back. She has such an aggressive and fast growing type of cancer, that she's at high risk of it metastasizing. All those treatments together would've given her a huge edge against the disease. That's why it's a bit worrisome to me. But no decision has been made yet and it will be up to her to decide. Truth be told, I have a feeling she'd tell the doc "no way, I'm not stopping. I'm gonna see this through" and continue with it. That's just how she is. But we'll see. If not, she will still have the herceptin which is quite good anyway, as well as the tamoxifen as well.

First things first though. First, we get her home :)

36. I haven't posted before but I've been thinking so much
of you and your beautiful wife and family. I so look forward to your updates and keep you all in my prayers.

I want you to know, when I was in my 30's, with young children, I too had an advanced cancer. That was back in the dark ages. Now, those children are grown and there are grandchildren. In fact, the first grandchild was born while I was still in treatment. She now has a master's degree and is expecting her second baby. I never dared to hope I'd see that. I use to cry and pray I'd live to see her take her first steps.

Several years after I had passed the crucial years, my husband was diagnosed with a stage4 cancer, in 1993 and had a recurrence in 2003. He's doing just fine, in fact better than fine. However, his treatment also caused many close calls and the nose-diving blood counts and the chemo delays, the radiation delays and several hospitalizations with pnemonia. It was always scarey as hell, but once you're on the other side, you look back and know you have faced the worst and you are both stronger than you ever thought you could be, especially than you think during those dreadful nights of tears and promising God anything and everything.

Strength and blessings to your family.

And don't worry about the tone of previous messages. I had to go through even the possibility of my wife having breast cancer this past spring (biopsy results turned out to be negative), and I can assure you that, if she and I had gone through what you and Stacey did last week, I would really have been falling apart (as it was, I was going through similar panic moments over even the possibility that she might have one of the most treatable forms of the disease). I'm sure we all understand how you were feeling.

Prayers will continue -- and, I should note, I've got a whole bunch of non-DUers joining in!

49. I am so glad to hear she is stabilized. A question, if you don't mind...
When she first started treatment, did anyone ever bring up getting a PPV vaccine?
I ask, because my son, a kidney patient (awaiting transplant), got this vaccine in order to be on the transplant list, but AFTER he had both chemo and aggressive prednisone treatment.

After reading what your wife has been through, I realize how scary this could have become for him and I didn't even know it. I still wouldn't know it, except that the PPV vaccine is MANDATORY to be placed on the transplant list.

Anyway, just curious if anyone ever brought it up w/her when she first started treatment - I wonder how many people may not know about it and could possibly need it.

Also, as she improves, could she NOW receive it? I wonder if it would do any good at this point?

I am so glad that her signs are improving and stabilizing.

All the very best to your family.

59. Great news.....don't worry if the the fever
returns, as long as it doesn't get too high, and as long as the kidney output is good. Good news on the BP. The respirator should keep her Oxygen level up. And, it sounds as if the doctors are talking what will happen in the next few weeks, like they are encouraged, too.

Not out of the woods, but going in the right direction. Praying that everything keeps going in that direction.

Peace.

60. I'm glad for the update and all of the threads.
I want to know how BOTH of you are doing and I'm sure most others do too. We really do care.
Sounds like lots of positive signs at this point and I think you are right to be optimistic.
Make sure to take care of yourself. Pick up lots of easy to fix, nutritional snacks that you can
eat at home and on the trips back and forth to the hospital. Get some rest too.
She and your kids need you to be in good health right now. Stay strong!

First, don't apologize, man. You've been through the downtown business section of hell. Second, do whatever you need to do to keep going. One more time, we got your back. Finally, get some rest and take a break, even a walk to clear your head and rest your heart. Stacey and your children need you whole and strong.

And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all. Emily Dickinson

New threads are great, so keep 'em coming when you get a chance, please.

I have been thinking of Stacey, you and your boys since I heard she was back
in the hospital.
Good thoughts and prayers have been going out several times a day to all of you.

You've got a huge, positive energy field coming from DUers, our families and friends.
My SO asked the congregation to say a prayer for all of you when he attended church
last Sunday.So--more good energy coming your way!

I'm so happy to hear she is improving!

Take care of yourself, OMC. I know it's hard to do with all the stress and responsibility
you have. Sleep will help you get over that damn virus and you'll be better equipped to deal
with things.

Prayers and good energy are continually sent from SoCal. ;-)
