How should I feel about this? Should I feel insulted? |
|
So I started this job a couple of months ago that is a decent job but I was hired as a three month temp. I was given to understand it was really a temp-to-hire position and that almost everybody here started as a temp. Well, they are about to offer a second person a DIRECT hire position in my department doing almost the same thing I am doing. That makes me wonder. Why are those two people getting a perm position and I have to jump through hoops (my coworkers told me to prepare to wait awhile to be offered a reg position- the three month contract will most likely be extended. I hear it can be as long as 10 months..). I really need some new insurance benefits and it would be really nice to get some paid leave or paid HOLIDAYS (I get the holidays off but I don't get paid). THis is insulting to me and makes me feel not so secure. Of course there is lots of work and I seem to be okay at my job (getting better with practice). But still...

about them?
Their background/experience, etc?
"doing almost the same thing I am doing" - almost but not quite? To whom are they reporting?
A lot may just depend on the agency you go through, or who is actually doing the "hiring". Different departments may have different managers, different budgets.
There are myriad reasons why this may be happening.
You shouldn't interpret as any slight upon yourself, is my suggestion.
Do your job and do it well and don't worry so much about what the other guy's doing/not doing, getting/not getting - in the long run it is only you and your performance that *may* land you the perm job.
I say *may* because - well, even if you're perfect, wonderful, awesome - there may be factors beyond your control. Like the other guy is the owner's wife's nephew or something.

2. Is there a reason why you just can't ask what their intentions are toward you? |
|
Let them know you really want to go perm - this is time you could be looking for a permanent position elsewhere.
No reason to feel insulted until you know what's going on.

3. Oh I am pretty sure they are going to hire me...eventually |
|
My three months is up in October and thats when we are getting most of our samples (I do testing in support of drug clinical trials so we have a schedule thats pretty well known of work) and plus turnover is happening here. Its pretty much known that at least one, if not two other people in the department are looking. Now that I think about it, the people hired might be making less than me...I here its not uncommon for people here to take a paycut from their temp positions when they are perm.

cynical, why, yes i am! but when you see a person who gets to jump ahead of all the lines, after awhile, you figure it out why some animals are more equal than others
i would still be looking around for another job, just in case

I found out that the jobs were advertised as FTE positions (full time employees) so it speaks more to what the company itself wants more so than my dept...and this place is so huge as to be impersonal in some ways...1000+ employees on my site alone....
