How did you get your user name
Mine...........

This ship honors the distinguished naval career of Vice Admiral Lawson Patterson Ramage, born January 19, 1909 in Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1931, he saw his first sea duty aboard destroyers and heavy cruisers.

After graduation from Submarine School in December 1935, VADM Ramage entered submarine service, serving in submarine S-29 and USS SANDS. He was assigned on the staff of Commander, Submarine Force Pacific, based in Pearl Harbor, during the attack on December 7, 1941. He made his first war patrol aboard USS GRENADIER in the spring of 1942, participating in the sinking of 24,000 tons of enemy shipping.

His first command was USS TROUT, which engaged in successful war patrols in the areas of Midway, Truk, the Solomons and the South China Sea. On August 28, 1942, Ramage intercepted a Japanese task group consisting of the light carrier TAIYO, plus cruisers and destroyers. Ramage closed TROUT to short range and fired five torpedoes at the carrier, scoring the first-ever hits on a Japanese carrier.

He assumed command of USS PARCHE (SS 384) in July 1943 and led her through four war patrols in the Southern Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during a pre-dawn attack by the PARCHE on a Japanese convoy on July 31, 1944.

Following the war, he commanded Submarine Division FIVE TWO. His duties from 1947 until 1956 included several positions including Special Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations.

After serving as Commander, Cruiser Division TWO and a variety of positions in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, he was designated Assistant Chief of Naval Operations in October 1960.

From August 1962 until July 1963, he was Deputy Commander of the Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, after which he served as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Fleet Readiness and Operations). In July 1964 he assumed command of First Fleet, during which time he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service. In August 1966, he reported as Deputy Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet and Chief of Staff and Aide to the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet. In March 1967 he became the Commander in Chief of the Military Sea Transportation Service in Washington, D.C.

On April 1, 1970, VADM Ramage retired from Naval service. He died on April 15, 1990 at his home in Bethesda, Maryland.

Medal of Honor Action
While conducting operations with USS STEELHEAD (SS 280) and USS HAMMERHEAD (SS 364) off the coast of Luzon, the group made contact with a large Japanese convoy. HAMMERHEAD attacked first but was unable to score any hits. Before dawn the next day (July 31, 1944), STEELHEAD and PARCHE made contact with the convoy and STEELHEAD scored several kills before having to disengage to reload torpedoes. Red Ramage saw his opportunity and took PARCHE into the middle of the convoy, engaging in a 46-minute running surface battle with the merchantmen and their escorts. Showing incredible poise and determination, Ramage cleared the bridge and took his boat among the ships, conducting high-speed evasions while firing salvo after salvo at the high value targets. He directed his crew to reload the torpedo tubes, something that was never previously done in combat. At one point, he passed within 50 feet of an enemy merchant, maneuvering violently to avoid collision while simultaneously firing three “down the throat” shots at the target. When he withdrew from the battle, PARCHE had fired nineteen torpedoes and scored hits on 5 ships. Postwar reconstruction credits him with sinking two and sharing credit for a third kill with STEELHEAD. For his heroic actions, CDR Ramage was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in January 1945.

Thanks for your outstanding video productions.

I think the best one I've seen yet was to the tune of "No Bravery". Very moving.

Keep on keepin' on.

BTW: I once met a bank teller named Rise. That's pronounced Ree-suh, and it's Scandinavian, I believe. Rise Stevens was a famous mezzo soprano at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1940s and 50s. She did a fabulous "Carmen" that is still being sold today. She was beautiful then and she is still alive!

So you're not the only girl out there named after a beautiful, talented, famous woman.

I was working on making one big universe for multiple RPG genres, including a superhero one. This character had actually been split into two seperate people, Light and Dark respectively. Both were good guys, the light one was just a bit more of a boy scout and the dark one had a cooler look, so I usually use that name.

23. I'm an avid Rex Stout fan
He not only (IMO) wrote the wittiest mysteries ever, but he was one of the charter founding members of the ACLU. Back in the 60's Stout took on the F.B.I. in the mystery The Doorbell Rang.

from Wikipedia:

...Rex Stout was one of many American writers closely watched by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, journalist Herbert Mitgang discovered when he requested Stout's file for his 1988 book, Dangerous Dossiers...In the vague, bizarre phrase of one of the documents in his dossier, Stout was described as 'an alleged radical' ...

J. Edgar Hoover himself and the FBI's powerful publicity machine came down hard on Stout in 1965 when his novel, The Doorbell Rang, was published by the Viking Press. About one hundred pages in Stout's file are devoted to this novel, the FBI's panicky response to it, and the attempt to retaliate against the author for writing it.

"The Doorbell Rang" is one of my favorite books, wherein the great detective, Nero Wolfe, takes on J. Edgar Hoover's nasty little F.B.I. tricks and beats them soundly, making them look like buffoons in the process.

The book ends with J. Edgar Hoover himself standing outside Nero Wolfe's door:

The doorbell rang. I got up and went to the hall and saw a character on the stoop I had never seen before, but I had seen plenty of pictures of him. I stepped back in and said, "Well, well. The big fish."

He frowned at me, then got it, and did something he never does. He left his chair and came. We stood side by side, looking. The caller put a finger to the button, and the doorbell rang.

"No appointment," I said. "Shall I take him to the front room to wait a while?"

"No. I have nothing for him. Let him get a sore finger." He turned and went back to his desk....

The doorbell rang.

I swear they are a breed apart....I just love the way their eyes completely dominate their faces.

Skittles was found as a starving half-grown kitten with a dislocated leg (bone showing) by a coworker who - bless his heart - even though he was severely allergic to cats stuck him in a box, strapped him to his motorcycle and drove him 25 miles to me in the DFW metroplex. After getting a pin in his leg, wearing a cast for a few weeks and stuffing his face (A LOT) he was as good as new. I miss him.

91. I have a chubby black cat too!
...I was gonna call her something exotic, like Circe or Isis, but the chub factor negated those names, so she's just Miss Patty. I knew a Miss Patty when I lived in Jamaica, and the cat is that woman in feline form. When either of them sit down, they got back that don't quit!!

As for my name, I was first called a Pinko since 1968 when I was 13 and first spoke out against the Vietnam war. It was a shock to be called that again in 2002 when I spoke out against BushCo's buildup of hate against Iraq. So like other derogatory slurs, I decided to make it my own.

Now that I escape sleep walk away

Jails bars ain't golden gates
those who fake they brake when they meet they four hundred pound mate
if i could rule the world, everyone who have a gun
and together of course we'd get the up in our their horse
I kick a rhyme drinking moon shine
I poor sip on the concrete, for the deceased
but no don't weep, Wyclef in a state of sleep
thinking about the robbe-RY that I did last WEEK
Money in the bag, bank a look like a drag
I wanna play with pelicans from here to Bagdad
Gun blast, think fast I think I'm hit
My girl pinch's my hips to see if I still exist
I think not, I send a letter to my friends

instead of blood, ikhor flows through the veins of the greek gods.

Why I chose this name, I can't remember. If I had to choose another name, it would be Lethe....the river that can erase all the memories of a mortal man, the opposite of Mnemosyne. Sometimes I would like for that to happen, and start fresh.

Mine is a Swahili verb meaning "research" or "investigate".

If you're a PC guy, you'll soon find that Microsoft is releasing a new search engine called Tafiti, or "do research". They stole it from me. x(

76. Babylon 5
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 01:30 PM by Xithras
Deliberate misspelling of Zathras. In B5, all of the Zathras species have names that sound like phonetic variations of Zathras. Xithras (which should be pronounced with a "zi" like "zipper") is in keeping with those variations. It's homage to my favorite species in my all time favorite sci fi show.

My very first sig line was also from Zathras: "Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. Probably have very sad death. But, at least there is symmetry." You'd have to be a fan of the show to understand the humor in the quote.

I was listening to Achtung Baby, I expected the US to plummet down an imperial slope of bread and circuses, and tried to put the 2 together.

It was too many letters. I gave it some thought and decided there would be a lot more circuses than bread.

I guess I was right.

Kali ("the black one") is the Hindu mother goddess, symbol of dissolution and destruction. She destroys ignorance, maintains the world order, and blesses and frees those who strive for the knowledge of God.
