The character is a researcher at a natural history museum.

both ancient and modern.

It's quite a riveting read, if you don't mind all the gory murders. Everything will be hunky dory in a couple hundred pages, now that FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast has shown up to help the NYPD.
