I think I am going to throw up. The job my husband has been waiting to start
may no longer exist.

He used to have a small business in the construction industry spraying drywall texture on walls and ceilings. At the end of July, he talked to a nationwide homebuilder about getting a job with them as a superviser. We have a friend who works for them and he was the one that told my husband about the job. They promised him a job, but they said it would have to wait until the end of their fiscal year (October 1). In fact, they GUARANTEED him a job working as a builder. At about the same time, the main contractor that used my husband started trying to screw him on prices. So we dithered around and decided to sell the spray equipment and live off the money til the new job started. I have been pinching pennies so hard it's a miracle Abe doesn't squeal. Anyway, my husband just got off the phone with the guy who handles the hiring at the new job. My DH said he sounded very vague and said, "Well, let us get this year end out of the way and we'll get back to you." I just checked their website and the job, which had been listed as being open for the past eight weeks is now gone.

I swear, I think I am having a panic attack. My heart is going 100 mph, my palms are sweating and my head has just started pounding. What the fuck are we going to do?? He works in construction and always has. It is the only thing he knows.

1. Might be time to start pounding the pavement.

Someone in your area may need his skills and experience right now.

on edit: I know that doesn't help with the immediate cash crunch.

2. It's just scary as hell because we have been shooting to make things
stretch to this deadline. Now I have no idea how much longer we are going to have to make what we have on hand last.

Rationally, I know we will figure it out. It just scares the shit out of me.

4. Can his friend ask the company what happened?
Maybe he's got some inside info. Even if it's bad, at least you'll know and he can begin looking for something else instead of being strung along.

6. I have already left a message on his voicemail.
There was another job offer mentioned a couple of weeks ago. If this job looks like it has evaporated, my DH is going to call the other people and see if it is still open.

I am panicking less. It was just a bit of a shock. They were SO positive and SO excited about my DH's level of experience, work history, etc. Maybe the poster above is right and they have just taken the job off because they are giving it to my DH.
