What music have you listened to lately?
There's a fairly recent thread asking DU geezers what they are listening to, but I didn't feel comfortable posting there. :P

Here are some observations based on my most recent listening:

- I highly recommend these CDs: The Donnas' Bitchin', KT Tunstall's Drastic Fantastic, Jesca Hoop's Kismet, Rogue Wave's Asleep At Heaven's Gate, Imperial Teen's The Hair the TV the Baby & the Band

- Melissa Etheridge's The Awakening is recommended. Drags in spots, but has very poignant lyrics and some of her best singing

- Foo Fighters' Echoes Silence Patience & Grace is also recommended. There's filler, but there's a better balance of hard, soft, and experimental. There Is Nothing Left To Love is my favorite CD from them.

- Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good is better than Me and My Gang, but still is not my thing. At least they pick up the tempo a bit, but it still has a middle of the road country sound and merely average vocals.

- I heard a few songs from Bruce Springsteen's Magic on YouTube! It is fantastic sounding, and could very well be my album of the year. It ranks with Bruce's very best, from those songs.

- I want the new one from indie duo Georgie James. Adding that to my fall wish list along with Bruce, Vanessa Carlton, Lucy Walsh, Bree Sharp (if it comes out this year,) Trisha Yearwood, Iron & Wine, PJ Harvey, Jimmy Eat World, Plumb, Cindy Alexander, Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry, Wussy, Liz Tormes, Steve Earle, John Fogerty, and more.

- Samples from PJ Harvey's White Chalk sounded haunting. I'm not a big fan of her early stuff (though I respect the raw emotional power,) but this, Uh Huh Her, and Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea are great.

- The Andrea Corr solo CD doesn't sound like it matches the Corrs' CDs, but has moments.

38. "urban folk". That's a pretty decent two word description . I've just given it a first listening
and it's excellent. It's a more diverse sound, paying homage to his new home,New York City. He says goodbye to Guitar Town in Tennessee Blues, the opening track.

For any The Wire fans,he also does a version of the Tom Waits song "Way Down in the Hole," which has begun the first four seasons of this best TV show ever, each season having had a different artist singing it.

At the end of the fourth season Earle's recovering drug addict character, who had a small part in the first season, looks to be featured more prominently in the fifth and final season. So,with that in mind,I'm wondering if his version of "Way Down in the Hole" will be the one used in the fifth and (sniff, sniff) final season of this HBO series.

10. Some of mine...
The Weakerthans - "Reunion Tour."
Their latest. It's sooo good. I'm seeing them live on the 5th. Can't WAIT.

Cheese on Bread - "Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby"
Acoustic twee, anti-folk kinda boy/girl thing.

Imperial Teen - "The Hair, The TV, The Baby, and The Band."
Very glad to have a new one by them.

The Ackleys - "Forget Forget, Derive Derive"
I just can't seem to get this EP out of my rotation. It's kinda punky, high energy indiepop.

I'm EAGERLY awaiting Tullycraft's new one. Still about 3 weeks to go.

13. Been listening to a mix of stuff lately
At this very moment I'm listening to Devendra Banhart's 'Shabop Shalom' off of his album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon; it's actually rather terrible, but comically so.

List of what albums I'm listening to these days:

*Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
*Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
*PiL - The Greatest Hits So Far
*Ricardo Villalobos - Achso
*Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle

I'm in a real shitty mood so for some reason Pink Floyd works. I was playing Relics to death and now Mettle.

I totally disagree on PJ Harvey. Her early stuff rocks. It's pissy and quite original. Maybe I will listen to that next.

I've got my iPod chock full of Koto, Shakuhachi, Shamisen and Taiko pieces. Amazingly beautiful stuff, and very relaxing. I can't play it in the car, though, or I'll go into a trance and wake up in the emergency room.

49. Maybe you like the first 4 Metallica lps because they
are hard/fast/loud rock-n-roll not too far off from the DKs and Ramones. Motorhead would sit right smack between 'em. Regardless, you have great taste in music, or at least very similar to mine. Your list may as well be mine.

I'm actually looking forward to Heroes And Thieves as well. Gotta say, the fact that she's now on Irv Gotti's hip-hop label did throw me for a loop.

Anyway, I've been listening to:

A Fine Frenzy - One Cell In The Sea
Fairground Attraction - The First Of A Million Kisses
Aberfeldy - Young Forever
Zero 7 - The Garden
Josh Ritter - Live At The Record Exchange

Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 04:53 AM by DarkTirade
a lot of John Williams, (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Schindler's List, ect.) some Hans Zimmer, but not a whole lot, the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (fabulous work by Howard Shore), and a few other random geeky things, like some Final Fantasy soundtracks (Nobuo Uematsu), the soundtracks to Serenity and Firefly (David Newman and Greg Edmonson), and a few other random movies in there. I also had the Vagrant Story soundtrack in there (another Squaresoft video game, don't remember the composer's name offhand), but I just took that off the winamp list when I added a bunch more John Williams. It was getting too crowded. :)

I saw them when they toured with Propagandhi. It was a very good show.

If you still have the FTP info I gave you I can put some drugs on the server if you want. 460 megabytes of drugs. Enough drugs that it would take six CDs worth of music to do all of the drugs I will put there.

35. New CDs I've bought lately:
Manu Chao - La Radiolina - great stuff. Basically if you take all the genres on iTunes that I listen to and put them in a blender, and add some Spanish and French in the mix, you'd get this. It's catchy as hell and fun to listen to, and these guys put on a hell of a show.

Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace - The Foos do it again, and I like the mixes on this one a lot more than on In Your Honor.

Dropkick Murphys - The Meanest Of Times - I've been a fan of the Murphys for quite some time and this one is no execption. After that insanely catchy song they did for The Departed, I had high hopes for this one and it exceded my expectations.

44. Following up on the PJ Harvey
I heard the whole album White Chalk today on the AOL Listening Party. Singing in that high tone for the whole CD gets a little tiresome, but the album has some beguiling idiosyncrasies. It's worth getting, at a grade of at least B.

A big new discovery of mine is Kyle Lardner, whose CD Sail Among the Stars sounds phenomenal! It is piano pop mixed with folk and some power pop. On "Moral Amnesia," I read she mentions Al Gore in a positive way and expresses concerns about the Iraq War. She's quite pretty, too, though at 19, she's out of range for some of those older than me. Her page:

http://www.kylemusic.biz/

I heard Vanessa Carlton's Heroes & Thieves on YouTube, and way to go Vanessa! Clearly her best CD (though I enjoyed her other two a lot,) and a fave of 2007 here.

LCD Soundsystem - both CDs.

M.I.A. - Kala. I don't really like rap, but damn she is good.

Bob Dylan - everything, but especially The Rolling Thunder Revue and Royal Albert Hall bootlegs.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare and they have a tasty Amy Winehouse cover out.

Eagles of Death Metal - Death by Sexy. I am worried that I might actually die by sexy, but for something this much fun it is an acceptable risk.

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted. How were they not bigger?

Ali Farka Toure - Savane. Really my first foray into world music, and probably won't be my last.

KMFDM - Tohuvabohu
Bad Religion - New Maps Of Hell (good, but not as good as their last two were, imo)
Cobalt - Eater Of Birds
Oxbow - The Narcotic Story
Killing Joke - Laugh? I Nearly Bought One, and Democracy
Deathspell Omega - Fas Ite, Meledicti, in Ignum Aeternum (hefty name)
Melt Banana - Bambi's Dilemma
