and I never would have believed I'd put anyone on there when I joined DU, but there are two people, and two only, who've been an uncalled for level of rude, with very unkind personal putdowns in their replies to me, and who the hell needs that. It makes me sad to have had to do that though; we're supposed to be on the same side, even with disagreements. I hope those are the only two I'll ever feel the need to put on that list, although I recently had the displeasure of reading posts of what I viewed as a pretty blatant anti-Semite in one of the Ahmadinejad threads recently, and have been tempted to make him number three.

I don't have a problem with using the ignore function. Better than being pissed off constantly and having the temptation to post really snotty things.

Usually when there's some long argument in a thread every other post will be ignored and I can read the replies to the ignored person's posts and say, "Yep, that was a good idea."

And then some people linked some threads in GD to try and prove stuff about all the Ahmadinejad flap, and when I clicked it it would say "You are ignoring the author of this thread." Another good judgement.

Almost everyone I put on ignore is pretty obviously a troll, so I figure I'm not missing much. There are some that probably aren't trolls but I thought it'd be better to put them on ignore than to yet again lecture people about their prejudice and stereotypes, which I imagine that my tendency to do that has put me on some ignore lists.

I don't understand why some people equate putting someone on ignore with being a wimp or wanting to shut down other opinions or whatever. It's not banning. They can still post here. It's just that I don't have to see it. It's the equivalent of choosing to not listen to Rush Limbaugh's show.

For the longest time there was no one on it.

Somewhere along the way I picked up a troll and discovered just how nice the feature was. And that got me to thinking a bit.

I use DU in my home. In a sense everyone who participates on DU is a guest in my home. I figure anyone who conducts themselves in such a way that I would intentionally omit them from invitations to the next dinner party has earned a spot on my ignore list. Without exception, those on my ignore list are there because they have been rude, mean spirited, insensitive, demeaning and sometimes even bigoted. Multiple times. Comment need not have been directed at me personally. Takes more than a single incident. I know folks here only by their words. And I do not consider this kind of behavior particularly progressive....
