I wouldn't know. I am intelligent and somewhat curious about the world other than my bra size and tanning schedule.

Plus dodging hurled pots and pans is great cardiovascular exercise.

78. In my experience,
so's rarely admit this -- even if they realize it.

What's really vexatious is when they realize this (that you're not guilty of an alleged infraction; sometimes you can sense this in a change in their manner) -- but continue beating up on you anyway, just on general "principle" (whatever).

...

To illustrate, a related experience:

I was living with this woman, and during winter when the house was cold, I would get up first in the morning and start the wood-stoves going (in her office only if she'd be working early), while herself stayed in the nice warm bed.

One day, she accused me of some deliberate plan to use-up her wood, and she forbid me from starting-up the wood-stoves in the morning (during the day, she controlled feeding the stoves). (Her last boyfriend, I believe, liked to keep the house something resembling warm; but me, I play largely by house rules.)

So I stopped, and the job fell to her.

And it took only a couple of days for her to realize that starting-up the stoves in the morning (in that cold, cold house) was a pain in the ass -- and that me doing it was a good thing.

Now, she couldn't admit that she'd been wrong; so after a couple of days she grandly announced that I could resume starting-up the stoves in the morning (like she was doing me some big favor; however, I relied on labor (on/around her house) to keep me warm, she was the one sitting around) -- but that I was using too much wood (which I wasn't, since it was my job to get the replacement wood; plus, if she ever thought it was too warm, she'd belabor me).

(Without remonstrance, I resumed my duties.)

5. I'm a man, and I think that stupid, empty women are stupid, empty women.
Not without compassion as to their state, however.

It might be that some men are frightened and have tiny egos that are afraid of rejection at several levels, and less-than-perfect women would be less likely to say "no".

I want a woman who is smarter than I am, because I like learning and being suprised in a positive manner by any person I care for.

6. Because they have this idiotic idea that masculinity includes being
superior to the woman in your life.

I love a certain passage from Susan Howatch's Absolute Truths, the last volume of her "Anglican" novels.

In it, the main character from the first book (Glittering Images), now widowed, has just remarried. While the wife who died was a beautiful, good-hearted (although flawed) and sensible woman, he realizes that this new marriage is different. He is now mature enough to enjoy marriage to a woman who is his intellectual equal, and that it is this intellectual equal who will be good company in his later years.

When I see young men marrying ditzes, I wonder how long it will take for the ditziness to wear thin. If the marriage lasts, will they turn into one of those sour old couples who glare at each other across the table in restaurants?

8. There are surely stupid, empty women who are not sexy..and the
stupid, empty ones who actually are sexy can be viewed (for those men so inclined) like fast-food: Hits the spot, not good for the long term. On the other hand, I've known some men who like their women to be both pretty and 'empty'...usually because they don't want a partner who is going to challenge them.

18. Same here
A friend of mine is dating someone right now who she finds very physically attractive, but she goes on and on about how he takes her for granted, how she's doing most of the work in the relationship, how she doesn't understand why she has to be the one to "train" him (ftr, he's 45 and has been married before), etc., and yet she's still with him. I've known her for a long time and I think if she took a good, hard look at the relationship she'd realize she could do a lot better--she doesn't see that because she doesn't want to see it, imo.

We men are monolithic and can be summed up easily in broad, overarching statements. The same is true for many ethnic minorities, like Hispanics. "All hispanics love to steal." See how easy that is?

24. I've seen it a lot of times
Sometimes, a very attractive woman is not taken as seriously in certain work situations.

As an example, I knew a woman once that was rather short (a tad under 5'0", though she'd usually claim to be 5'0" or 5'1"), had a pretty face with big blue eyes and had a really big chest... and, she often had a heck of a time getting men to take her seriously. They were usually too busy staring at her chest or complimenting her on her eyes.

People do tend to assume a lot of things based on appearance.

And, just the opposite, people also assume things about people based on their personalities (Wasn't there an episode of Seinfeld about Jerry liking some woman based on her phone voice and personality?)

"...women are often deemed stupid when they pretty."

You are so right. I've been out of High School for a long, long, time, but I remember very well hanging out with the cheerleaders, Homecoming queens and sophmore/junior princesses. These girls were already being programmed, never allowed to try anything for themselves--there were always condescending adults and willing young boys ready to push them away from anything hard and take over. It was "don't worry your pretty little head about it" taken to the extreme.

Also, if any of those beautiful, popular girls actually had a real problem, a real issue that depressed them, there was no one that took them seriously. If they tried to confide their feelings, invariably there'd be a sarcastic "Oh, yeah, Perfect You. What've you got to complain about?"

And the worst consequence is that real boys/men never ask those girls out. The quirky boys who I dated, the fun and humourous ones, figured these pretty girls were out of their league. So many of them were either lonely or stuck with jock-type jerks.

Of course, I didn't have this insight when I knew them. But I always thought it was cool that I was friends with them (and only cuz I was a big smart aleck who couldn't keep her mouth shut) and I was able to realise there was more to these girls than anyone gave them credit for. So what a catch 22: Pretty equals bimbo, equals perfect life with no problems, and yet when you live up to the stereotype, you're reviled for being an empty-headed golddigger.

I hated my looks in middle school (probably cuz I reached my full height of 6'1") but realised a few years later that I could escape so much crap by not being conventional. Conformist men never wanted me, and vice-versa.

So those of you who're younger and see men acting this way towards Pam Anderson types, either they're blinded by lust(give them a few years, they'll come around) or else they're dudes you don't want anyway.

But be advised, not all men want sexy, supposedly empty-headed women. And we as chicks need to be less superficial as well.

She also spoke three languages.

I never actually asked her what her IQ was, but last time I had an IQ test it was around 145 and she could keep up with me with no problem. :)

Of course... the least attractive girl I ever dated had an IQ around 160... hmm.... :P

Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 12:41 PM by abq e streeter
I personally listed " brainiac" at the top of my "turn-ons" on an internet singles site. I suspect there are more like me out here in singles-land than a lot of women think. That said, however, a woman who enthusiastically embraces eroticism, sexuality, femininity, etc. is going to be sexy to most men and if a "stupid, empty " woman has that type of attitude, she'll be sexier to me than a bright woman who lacks that attitude. Ultimately, though, I don't think I could sustain a relationship with a "sexy airhead" or one without a sense of cultural, intellectual, artistic, and POLITICAL hipness"... just my take on it, but I'm guessing I'm far from the only guy who thinks this way.

17. I assume when you say "stupid, empty" you mean "shallow"?
and, I can't say I'd ever found that type appealing for anything more than a glance or a double-take if they are physically attractive. Other than bad husband selection, both my ex-wife and wife now are bright women, and my wife now is very smart. And, neither is exactly chopped liver in the looks department, either.

Some men may like the shallow type, and I'm guessing because that type of woman is probably easier for some men to understand. But, those men aren't worth your time.

...when women were acquired and held as some kind of property. I think many men implicitly feel that a wife or whatever is just one more item they need to get by in the world.

61. Not from primative times, but from the modern era. In the distant past, intelligence was a plus.
An incurious woman is not threatening to male power. I imagine the appeal of vacuous women traces back to the times when women started to colectively challenge the social power arrangements. Back in primative times, picking an intelligent life mate could mean the difference between death and survival.

55. Someone told me something once that may help explain it...
"Men have two heads, and only enough blood to operate one at a time."

Pretty much sums it up.

58. First, there's none of that yammering you get from smart chicks.
By the way, can someone tell me why we're having this thread about baseless, dated stereotypes?

66. I have your answer.
Nature tells most of us to impregnate as many women as possible. Given our finite lifespans, that means looking for whomever might most easily fall for our line of bullshit.

69. The girls I'm attracted to are cute, okay with my pot, and not bigots.
They don't have to be 'smart' per se, as long as they're kind. I generally don't like discussing things like politics and science with people I'm attracted to because that's not what I'm in the relationship for (at my high school level at least). I talk about that stuff at home and in classes, I want someone I can just hang out with and talk about frivolous things.

72. I've never been able to be around vapid stupid people long enough to date them.
But that's just me. :P

Although to be fair, several of my recent exes HAVE had large breasts... just a coincidence though.

77. That's a very broad-brush statement.
The men who are of that mindset can have the empty-headed bimbos all to themselves for all I care.

79. Why do (some) women think that sexy women are stupid and empty?
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 12:17 PM by gmoney
In my last job, I was friends with one of the few young, physically attractive women in the company, who also happened to be very bright and funny and well spoken. The workforce was about 80% women, most of whom were middle-aged redneck dirtballs straight out of WalMart, and these women made my friend's work life hell. They gossiped, were rude to her, would not do work right if it was for one of her clients (she was in sales), would lose her work papers, and generally treated her like shit. She made every effort to be friendly, but it was pointless -- she joined the company softball team to try to assimilate, and the biddies who ordered the uniform shirts made sure to put #69 on hers. After a year of that BS, she ironically moved to Kentucky to get away from the Ohio rednecks.

Probably didn't help that the redneck guys who worked there leered at her and didn't take her too seriously either, which seemed to prompt further jealousy on the part of the biddies.

So, in this example, it's all those fat frumpy baby machines who are the "stupid and empty" ones... but I bet this is an isolated example. :sarcasm:
