If they were remaking Dr. Strangelove
Major Kong: Owen Wilson (assuming he gets his shit sorted out)

General Turgidson: R. Lee Ermey

Muffley/Strangelove/Mandrake: Will Ferrell

General Ripper: Tom Cruise?

Just guessing.

Thank goodness that the film was made decades ago, and not today...

1. Sadly, few people have the comedic talent of Peter Sellers
Will Farrell MIGHT be able to pull it off, but I highly doubt it.
Ricky Gervais, perhaps?

3. Hey, those are pretty good!
My list was simply a speculation on how they'd screw it up, but yours actually makes a bit of sense.

Depp would be perfect for the triple-play. Heck, he might even be able to pull off the four-fer that Kubrick wanted Sellers to do.

10. I don't think anyone could beat William H. Macy for the crazed, ultra-sincere

corporate outrage necessary to deliver the line: "You'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company for this!"

He'd nail it. Keenan Wynn sure did. :-)

on edit: I don't think Warren Beatty's breathy bedroom voice would work for lines like: "I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed; 15...20 million, tops!"

4. It depends on if the remake intended to capture the original or be something different...
If I were casting it, I would break up the trio (almost foursome) and cast each individually and I'd give
each the opportunity to reinvent the character. (Strangelove not necessarily wheelchair bound, for example.)
(Although, the Depp solution is a great one.)

Choices in no particular order:

Major King Kong: Randy Quaid

Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper: Burt Reynolds
Robert De Niro
(I really want to say Jack Nicholson here.)

General Turgidson: Fred Ward
Michael Gross

Muffley: Warren Beatty
Harrison Ford

Strangelove: Robin Williams
Johnny Depp

Mandrake: Hugh Laurie
Pierce Brosnan

COL Guano: William H. Macy

9. Can you think of any others?
What I'm trying to do is set it up with a believable start using people who have a history of playing similar
roles in a serious manner, but, have the capability of driving things off in an absurd tangent in a hurry. In
that way be like the original. :)

12. John Cleese would be another candidate for Mandrake.
Might be a little old for the part though....

13. I was trying to cram in Dustin Hoffman somewhere...
and that's the problem I've been having.

Oh, where have all the character actors gone?

I'd like to use some female characters too. That would be really different! :)

8. Not joking, exactly
Just dreading the way Hollywood tends to screw up the casting of remakes.

Thankfully, there are no plans to remake Dr. Strangelove (AFAIK).

7. WTF
...just get Henry Kissinger to play the Sellars role: it was based on him anyway!

Just kidding!! The only role I wanna see Kissinger in is as the indicted war criminal standing before the judge at The Hague.

11. I'd just resurrect Kubrick's zombie so he could eat the brains of anyone involved in such a thing.

17. Only a certain rubber-faced fartsmith could pull off the treble role
that Sellers managed so brilliantly.

21. Bruce Campbell
IS General Ripper. No 2 ways about it.

Johnny Depp could probably handle the Peter Sellers triple play, but who would take the Slim Pickings role?
