What are some of the reasons people leave DU?
I wonder if it will become worse as the primaries approach.

There are a lot of reasons people leave a discussion board... a lot that goes on behind the scenes, just for starters.

And, many people have suggested, there might be more disruptors as the elections near.

Though, I wonder if disruptors (the obvious ones) are the primary problem.

Then, there are people helping with the campaigns.. that will certainly be one reason.

Any thoughts?

Sick of being ignored, Sick of the Cliques, Losing internet service, death, illness, moving to a deserted island, becoming a millionaire overnight, taking a cruise around the world, forgetting how to type...

But, mostly it is the in-fighting and the sometimes collective lack of common sense in this pack.

But I love it! I've been accused plenty of times of being a distruptor, but I really just feel very passionatley about my candidate. Whoever is nominated I will support 100%, and it will be great to start attacking Republicans over fellow dems.

19. Mod conflict.
Sometimes (not often) an overeager (usually new) mod makes an arbitrary decision about one of your threads.
The first time it happens it REALLY pisses you off.
"HOW DARE THEY!!!"

You appeal to an admin.
You're knickers are in an EGREGIOUS twist about the INJUSTICE of it all.
They usually back the mod.
Understandably.
This place can get damned chaotic and you've got to keep some kind of order.
The mods calls are probably at least 95% justified.

So you learn to say 'the hell with it...it's just a damned forum board'.
And move on.

But, I've done that job before (at another forum) and I'd never do it again. It's very stressful... and, that's why, I try my best not to get angry over their decisions.

I have to use this board because it's established. I don't like any of the other journaling sites I have seen. They caught me hook, line, and sinker.

Yep, it's just a forum board. Sticks and stones can break my bones, but anonymous people with their sticky little comments... can't hurt, unless I let them.

Balderdash to all the nay-sayers! Go stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 01:19 AM by regnaD kciN
The 2004 primary season was so brutal, some members jumped to a new, rival site (which turned out to be led by a Naderite in sheep's clothing). I suspect this year could be as bad or worse.

I know that if a certain candidate I can't stand wraps up the nomination, I will restrict my DU time to the Photo Group and Lounge until the election is over, since I won't be able to swear the requisite oath of fealty to that candidate in order to not get tombstoned in political discussions.

What I'm really curious about is what will happen if/when we elect a Democratic President along with a Democrat-controlled Congress. So much of the energy here has been based around outrage at the Republicans still in control -- what will happen when we don't have them to kick around any more? Do we become cheerleaders for the plans of the new Democratic administration, find we're almost as critical for any ineptitude or half-heartedness on their part as for the treachery of BushCo, or something completely different?

62. I've actually considered that myself...
DU is, to a great extent, reactionary. It was created in response to the BushCo theft of the Presidency in 2000 and may not have any set purpose past the point where Dems take back control of the government.

I really think it's important that we keep channels open to criticize our government from a "left" perspective even IF the Dems are in charge.

121. We could have used this site all through the 1990s when the Clintons were in office.
I think it would have been great to have had that opportunity.

There were so many things I wanted to say as that was going on -- through all of its undulations.

I'm glad these young men got together to put this website up.

Best thing that happened to me was finding it when I did.

It's an unusual feeling of community that was sorely lacking on the Internet. Chat rooms were scatological from the start; flirty, but flimsy. Usenet forums got eaten up with ugliness day after day. I tried to use them for movie reviews, but found that the lack of moderation encouraged great difficulties. I had one PDX home on the Internet (still running), but abandoned that one for this one.

I've threatened to leave -- and when I came back, I got called out for it by somebody who is now on permanent IGNORE (the admins decision). Best thing that ever happened to me.

129. That's a great question! First, we'll revel in our victory but soon
we'll do the RIght vs. Left stuff within the Dem Party. I recently read about LBJ's quarrels with House Ways and Means committe chair, Wilbur Mills, over provisions of Medicare. Mills wasn't against it, he just had some problems with the details of the legislation. THAT would be a luxury for us nowadays!

123. You are quoting Larry Niven's law....
From: www.wikipedia.com

Niven's Law

Larry Niven is also known in science fiction fandom for "Niven's Law:" There is no cause so right that one cannot find a fool following it. Over the course of his career Niven has added to this first law a list of Niven's Laws which he describes as "how the Universe works" as far as he can tell.

60. A number of women have left
because of the continual disrespect toward them here. That's not unique to DU, but a fair amount of feminists prefer not to spend their time being bombarded with the message that women shouldn't be out in public if they are too fat, too thin, if the skin on their elbows is too wrinkled, if they are too young/too old for their spouse, if they wear the wrong belt or wear it at the wrong place on their hip bones, etc. And they get tired of continually seeing women called derogatory slurs.

67. Lack of freedom..
Seriously, if you can't handle a dissenting voice in type you need to get off the Internet. Really, people think different things. That is a good thing. Calling someone who disagrees with you a Freeper makes you look like a child. If the person is wrong counter with a solid argument. Grow the fuck up. If you want this place to be a circle jerk of agreement continue as is. You will exist on the fringe and be made fun of on other sites that allow differing thoughts.

I rarely post and when I am employed I don't have time to go to the forums. Also, around general election time, things tend to heat up more than I like, especially in General Discussion. I avoided DU for a while during 2004 because of all the flame wars.

My husband is now signed on as Audio_Al.

Regrettably, he didn't understand that he has to post about ????? number of times before he can start a thread. He said, "Phooey, I want to be able to post threads NOW..."

Guess who has the job of "ghost writing" his posts?? Sheesh.....

He's too busy with whatever else he does all day -- reviewing audio books, kitchen help (sometimes), yard work (all of it), errands, photos, travel, finance, co-hosting my audio show on some Fridays, and accompanying me to see "Camelot" on Tuesday night 10/02/07.

It's a pretty good life in retirement!

Stalking, harassing, back-stabbing, sharing of other people's Private Messages, divulging confidences, and spreading lies/gossip about other DUers.

And, my all-time favorite: being let down by the people you thought were your friends.

These are all reasons to leave DU.

142. As you may know
I'm stubborn too.

Now... I really have to get going.

This thread has been like a winding road, hasn't it?

:hi:

"Everyday Is A Winding Road"

I hitched a ride with a vending machine repair man
He says he's been down this road more than twice
He was high on intellectualism
I've never been there but the brochure looks nice
Jump in, let's go
Lay back, enjoy the show
Everybody gets high, everybody gets low,
These are the days when anything goes

Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer to feeling fine

He's got a daughter he calls Easter
She was born on a Tuesday night
I'm just wondering why I feel so all alone
Why I'm a stranger in my own life
Jump in, let's go
Lay back, enjoy the show
Everybody gets high, everybody gets low
These are the days when anything goes

Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer

Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer to feeling fine

I've been swimming in a sea of anarchy
I've been living on coffee and nicotine
I've been wondering if all the things I've seen
Were ever real, were ever really happening

Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer

Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer to feeling fine

Everyday is a winding road (repeat until song fades)
