You know it's fucking insulting that they sub-titled eveything the owner said in Kitchen Nightmares |
|
He spoke excellent English, English that's a fuckload better than some of the shit I've heard out of Americans.
It's insulting to you, it's insulting to him. Just because someone isn't from the country, it doesn't mean you have to write down everything he says for some idiot fuck viewer in America. Hell, they might actually learn that there's more out there than USA! USA! USA!

...Gordon's family moved around alot during his childhood, mostly in England. His accent is a sort of combination of a several regional accents.

I watched a part where the owner clearly said "I am embarrassed to see" and they subtitled it, and "Maybe the standard Gordon has" was subtitled.
And much much more. It's really sickening. Do I blame the media for dumbing this down, or blame America for being culturally dumb?

And I do mean it. It's hard to laugh instead of cry, but that's what I do for self-preservation's sake. On the other hand: :grr: :nuke: there are some things my sensibilities CANNOT tolerate. The two you mentioned above are a perfect example.

8. They've subtitled Americans before |
|
So I wouldn't think they did it just because he's Indian.

And I watch A LOT of reality shows. They do it a lot to southern and Boston accents.
On the BBC version, they do it to American and French accents.

12. I stil think they should use more discretion |
|
instead of blanket "we'll subtitle everything this person says", make it more of a selective thing.

I can understand all the people they subtitle. Personally, I think they should reserve it for people who mumble or something.

I always start to rant at the TV, and yell, "That's English you idiot! I can understand what the guy's saying!"

14. I was pissed at that as well |
|
I work with some men and women that have much heavier accents that are understandable given a small amount of attention, Mohammed's accent was far less prominent that some Boston or Texas accents that I've heard.

They keep running some hokey joke (with voiceover by John Oliver) about setting closed captioning on your TV!
They first couple of times was kinda cute. It's really annoying now.

They felt the need to put illuminating trackers in black hockey pucks so people could see them against white ice. Stupid shit like that is hardly new for them.
