What the fuck was up with fashion in the 70s?

From a 1975 JC Penny Catalog:

These guys look like pimps from 70s Blaxploitation films!

2. The same thing that was up in the '50s, '60s...
...and '80s, '90s, and nowadays, too.

Every "trendy" style will look ridiculous two or three decades down the road.

6. Agreed
IMO the current men's hairstyles already look ridiculous. Let's see, an eighth of an inch across the board, yep that's creative. People will laugh like hell at that in 20 years.

5. Ahhhh! My eyes!
"There we were in the middle of a sexual revolution wearing clothes that guaranteed we wouldn't get laid!"

No wonder people back then didn't care if the Pinto went up in flames... their clothes were just as dangerous!

12. That's quite bad, but the '80s, IMHO, were worse.
The big hair of the '80s makes me weep with disgust. Not to mention the fact that everyone seems to look like a cheap hooker.

14. Hmmm - I'd ask one question to each guy:
Dude #1 - how many prostitutes do you lease?

Dude #2 - why didn't you tuck in your shirt?

Dude #3 - The mustache and pajamas don't suit you. Why not go to K-Mart instead?

16. Freddie Mercury, Clifton Davis and Joey Silvera.
Here's another thing. Did aging accelerate in the 70s or what? I mean, I looked at a photo of my dad's 1975 10 year class reunion. All the guys in the photo looked like they were in their early 40s, even though they were all 28 years old.

It's the same here. With the exception of Silvera on the right, these guys look older than they are. People just don't look as old now for some reason.

And yes, 80s fashion was way . . . WAY worse.

18. am i the only one
who finds it disturbing that clothing and fashion hasn't changed much in the past 10 to 15 years?

It seems that throughout recent history clothing styles and hair styles have changed about ever 8 years or so, from the 50s to the 60s to the 70s to the 80s and to the 90s.

Then after the mid-90s things just grinded to a halt and we all seem to be wearing Old Navy or GAP clothing that hasn't updated or modified at all since about 1997.

And our hair is still the same - short and conservative.

Maybe the fact that we've had a conservative republican in office for the last 7 years has something to do with that.

I feel bad styles haven't changed. I hope I'm not wearing the same clothes 20 years from now that I am now. Doesn't culture have to evolve too?

24. The same forces that continue to guide fashion today
Stupidity and gullibility. Yeah, the seventies had ridiculous fashions, but today's pants down to the knees look, or the chest sweater look just as bad.

But people keep falling for them all the time:shrug:
