Curious, how familiar are DUers with one another?
I know, wierd question.

It's just that everyone acts like they know one another.

Honestly, I have no idea who anyone really is... I mean, there are even very few screen names I actually remember, and those I do, I know the people behind them don't -realize- I remember them.

Is this usual or not, that I always reply to what I see written, but not the actual person. It makes no difference who the person is. I just see words.

Are there very many DUers that know one another outside of these forums?

Just wondering.

13. Wow, sounds like I really need to get out more.
It's not like there aren't ways to meet people locally around here. I've just never been very social, I guess. I should try a little harder.

10. I've met countless DUers in real life.
Several of them live here, in my city and state and I've met a lot of them. I've been to several cities during my travels and have met even more. I've also been to a couple of protests in DC and met still more.

I'm even lucky enough to call a DUer my significant other. :)

15. Glad to see I'm not alone...
There are reasons for the way I am. I really have specific interests besides politics, and it's hard for me to become enthralled with people in general when those interests really preoccupy my thinking. Not having to worry about ancillary personality issues is one thing I like about internet forums. On the other hand, it might help to be more social. I really don't know.

More people than I thought appear to be actual friends here. Friends. Hmm. I vaguely remember having those. Like I said above, I have really specific things I work on at home that keep me a little too busy for normal life. Maybe that will change in the future.

18. I feel a kinship too
Maybe, in my case, I have very specific parameters for how I choose to get involved with people. Beyond that, I get a little nervous/bored/intimidated or something, not sure what.

24. It's the "not sure what" - am pretty sure :)
In otherwords, the "unknown". My primary feeling if I post/respond: intimidated - but that's just me - shy - but at least I know I'm not alone - DU is my grounding when things get rough. I live part of the year in a country that has come to not like Americans very much. I touch base by coming here.

48. our local area has had a few meetups, and I met a bunch of DU'ers
when the State Democratic Convention was held here in 2006. There was a DU party in one of the local pubs and we all met there, so I got to put faces with names at last. It was fun!

I correspond back & forth through the posting with others from around the board.

I have been here since 2004, and have caught up on most of the inside jokes that started as threads which morphed into something that took on a life of its own...(Oscar, Olive Garden, CornFlake Chicken, etc. )

and Welcome to DU.

The State Forums are where the local stuff is posted.

23. You just have to keep bringing it up that you rejected me :sob!:
I know a couple DUers personally. One in particular I've known for the better part of a decade and I would trust him with my life. There are others here I'm familiar with mostly because something they've revealed of themselves strikes a chord in me. Generally speaking, I hold most people here in high regard simply because I know they're here fighting the good fight. As such, even if it's someone I've never seen post before I'm usually more than happy to provide an internet hug or a genuinely felt bit of encouragement and support. We're a community. I don't know everyone here personally but that feeling of community means that I don't have to know you personally to care. If I were a better person it would be the way I would feel about all my fellow humans. But I'm not a better person and you guys are "my people" and as such I've got your back.

32. I have been lucky enough to have met quite a few DU'ers!
The ones I've met IRL have become very close friends...

We have talked, laughed and cried together many times...

And then there are many folks who I only know here on the boards...

And they are important to me as well...

This is the most important group of people to me outside of my immediate family...

Online or offline...everyone I know and love here is family...

We've had meetups and have had the good fortune to have others come and visit us.

I can honestly say I have never felt more "at home" with a group of people than I do among DUers. I wish we all lived in the same town.

Though I don't know where I'd go to get away from the GD flamewars.

Edit: If I could afford to, I'd travel and still meet more DUers.

41. There are offline gatherings in many locations
Go to your State Forum and see if they're having a gathering.

The Minnesota group gets together several times a year, most recently in August, when our planned picnic day turned out being 60° and raining. So we adjourned to a nearby restaurant and had a good time anyway.

I also met a few Oregon DUers when I lived there.

64. My conservative sister posts here
I caught her once when she posted a family pic in the Lounge. I think she lurks, mostly. She's not a disruptor, though. I won't reveal her identity, because she's really not as right wing as she thinks and probably learns a lot more here. ;)

Hi Sis :hi:

60. I had a group over to my house once
Great fun, good people, ate chili, drank beer. They even helped with the dishes.

Its like getting together with folks you think you've known a long time. Lots in common.

I also have some personal friends here I've known before DU. They're the same here as they've always been for years.

...never had the pleasure of meeting anybody in person. I hope to change that one day very soon. Oh, yes! :D

73. Never met anyone from DU.
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 10:54 PM by Evoman
And, despite over 1000 posts, I think about 5 to 10 people probably recognize my name.

Ah well...

Edit: There are quite a few people I'd like to meet, but I'm a poor recently graduated student, and there are no DUers in my vicinity.

87. Oh come on now...
There's got to be more than 5 or 10 people in R/T alone that curse at your screen name....;-)

..You are actually one of the group of DU members I would like to meet...

82. I've been to several meetups and have had the pleasure
of meeting a number of DUer's. I've also talked to several by email, chat, or phone but have never met them in person. I'm far from being a great socializer if something about another person resonates with me I try to put myself out there to know more.

84. Everybody knows me...
Or should, anyway. I'm one of the least anonymous posters on the internet.

My first wife called today and said she occasionally runs across one of my political pieces and says "yeah, that's him all right."

85. The only DUer that I know in person (that I know of at least) is my roommate.
I haven't been hanging out in the lounge that long, but there are a few screennames that I'll remember enough to jog my memory next time I see 'em. Usually for obscure reasons... but that's because my mind is a suppository of useless information.

And yes, I meant exactly what I said.

86. I have the luxury that sometimes comes with growing old. Time to travel.

I'm happy to say that I've met lots of DUers. I plan to meet lots more of 'em over the next few years.

I didn't know anyone in RL until the great Boston meet-up a few short years ago but DU has become like family to me since then. :hi:
