Radio Lady Previews: "Camelot" with Lou Diamond Phillips in Portland, OR

I'm taking a 10-year-old girl -- who is very interested in theater -- to the opening night. Her mother gave a $25.00 donation to the Unitarian fellowship last Sunday. Here's where I spend occasional Sunday mornings in festive spirituality: http://www.whuuf.org

THE LOVE TRIANGLE IS COMPLETE IN LERNER AND LOEWE’S CAMELOT!

Fred Meyer Broadway Across America -- Portland is pleased to announce Lerner and Loewe’s CAMELOT, opening October 2nd for eight performances at the Keller Auditorium. McCoy Rigby Entertainment, Liza Lerner and the Nederlander Organization have announced that RACHEL de BENEDET and MATT BOGART will join LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS in the court of Lerner and Loewe’s CAMELOT as the national tour continues.

LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS returns to the stage after his award winning star turn in THE KING AND I (1996) on Broadway. He received multiple awards and nominations including a Tony Award nomination, the New York Outer Critics Circle Award and a Theatre World Award for his performance as the King of Siam.

RACHEL de BENEDET will step into the role of Guenevere. Rachel recently co-starred with John Lithgow in the Broadway production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She has tremendous Broadway, regional and touring credits that include Nine (Diana) and The Sound of Music (Elsa) Brigadoon (Fiona), The Secret Garden (Lily) and Kiss Me Kate (Lili/Kate).

MATT BOGART will complete the love triangle as Lancelot. Matt’s Broadway credits include Miss Saigon (Chris), The Civil War (Private Taylor), Smokey Joe’s Café (White Guy), and Aida (Radames). He has numerous regional credits and leading roles at Arena Stage (Helen Hayes nomination), Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Paper Mill Playhouse and Goodspeed Opera House.

With a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, the splendid, memorable score includes the romantic and haunting “If Ever I Would Leave You,” the captivating “How to Handle a Woman” and the majestic “Camelot.” Re-discover the grandeur of one of history’s greatest love stories.

:sarcasm:

This is Broadway Across America... do they even come to Cincinnati? What about that joke that you people tell visitors, "This is Cincinnati. At least, it's not Akron."

My father used to tell me about Steubenville, Ohio -- not far from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Dad, Mom and I were born.

They had lots of loose women there.

You ever been there?

Inquiring minds want to know....

4. I used to love the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati.
I think I've been through the airport but that's about it.

Even my husband, who was a sales manager for several companies... hasn't spent much time there.

You should see "The Drowsy Chaperone" -- we saw it in London this summer and it's just a hoot!

I'd also advise you to miss "Sweeney Todd" -- we are big fans of the show -- saw it with the original stars in both Boston and New York -- but this new production isn't very good. We saw it in 2006. The actors were the musicians (that was a real mistake) and the staging looks like a college production. Better to get the VHS (tape) or DVD (if available) of it with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. They were the consummate couple!

22. I really liked the John Doyle production of Sweeney Todd.
It was a treat to see Patti LuPone play the tuba. And I'm a huge fan of the original as well; I snapped up the OC album as soon as it came out. Sweeney Todd is my favourite musical, period, and I've seen six or seven different productions of it, some good, some not so much. But Sondheim recommended the Doyle version, as he originally intended it to be a smallish chamber musical rather than the big production that Prince directed, and that was all the endorsement I needed. It's playing here in Toronto soon, and I'll probably go see it again. I meant to go down to NY to see Doyle's production of Company, but the Jeopardy! money didn't arrive till two and a half months after my games aired, and then my brother died and I had to go to Saskatchewan, so I missed it.

I will say one thing, though. If you have to have any album of Sweeney (or most other musicals, really), nothing surpasses the original cast. I just wish Len Cariou were in the DVD rather than George Hearn. Nothing wrong with Hearn, really, I just like Cariou better -- more brooding.

The Drowsy Chaperone is also returning to Toronto, with Bob Martin again as "Man in Chair". Yay! It's a must-see for me! I missed that one in its other incarnations here, the first at the Fringe and the second staged by Mirvish Productions. At least I'll see the completed product.

9. I'd go see it! I saw Rock Hudson in Camelot on stage when I was about 10.
Sadly, I sincerely doubt this show will make it to a stage near me.

13. Thanks for the information, PP. You are correct... according to:
From http://www.imdb.com biography:

"In the early 1970s he toured 13 cities as King Arthur in the musical 'Camelot'".

23. Too bad they couldn't have used those stars in the film.
I really despise the Camelot movie almost as much as the film version of Man of La Mancha, and for the same reason -- the leads couldn't sing!!!

Camelot played here recently with Michael York as Arthur. Isn't he about as old as Merlin?

15. I must admit, when I saw "La Bamba" back in the mid-'80s...
...I never would have believed that its star would be playing King Arthur twenty years later.

I saw Camelot twice on stage, both times in Los Angeles. The first time (1962) was the original road show for the Broadway production. The second (1980) was supposed to be Richard Burton's "farewell tour" in that role, but he had to withdraw from the production due to health problems the day before the performance I saw (we got an understudy, who was competent, but nothing to get excited about). As far as I know, Burton never appeared on stage in any role again. :-(

16. Hi there... Thanks for the memories! Have you ever used this database?
The Internet Broadway Database or:

http://www.ibdb.com

Searched for Camelot:

http://www.ibdb.com/show.asp?ID=2369

My ex-husband and I definitely saw it when we lived in New York City 1962-1969. The link shows the original cast list -- John Cullum's debut! Robert Goulet! Richard Burton! Julie Andrews! We probably went in the winter of 1963-1964 (right after our wedding on December 21) when the theater was a good way to lift one's spirits. Of course, you may recall this was just after the assassination of JFK in November 1963.

I tend to remember the shows that DIDN'T make it for some reason!!!

I do recall getting opening night tickets given to the press for "She Loves Me" with Barbara Cook and Daniel Massey. It was a terrific show and I had the vinyl cast album for years. I was working for Barry Gray, probably one of the original talk show hosts on WMCA, and he gave the tickets to me. I worked for just a few months as a production assistant.

Thanks so much for your comments!

We'd go back there in a.... a New York minute! (Except we're going to Utah and Nevada in October and Florida in December.)

I hope one day they rerun the PBS version I saw in the '80s, now that I have a DVR.

I love this picture. I'm decorating a cowboy-and-Indians sleeping nook for my six-year-old grandson.

Doing it right this morning! How appropriate.

Enjoy the day, James.

PS: This is just gorgeous...

I'd wish I had a record player. I'd buy a couple of records that I saw today.

19. I once lit a cigarette for LDP
They were filming parts of Young Guns II, here on the ranch and I went to see how they set up the "Indian Graveyard" scene and he was sitting on a rock looking for a light.

The real thrill was going up for lunch one day and getting Emilio Estevez' autograph on my copy of Repo Man.

20. Hi Kali -- What a great memory! Thanks for sharing...
I've always liked Emilio better than Charlie...

But I like Martin Sheen better than both of his sons.

Just has to do with aging factors, that's all.

You might read Joseph Gallivan's interesting review in Tuesday 10/2/07 "Portland Tribune."

"Don't Knock Knights in Tights"

http://www.portlandtribune.com/features/story.php?story_id=119126110668052900

The only trouble for us older folks is trying to at least partially forget the memory of all the other Camelots we have seen in our lives.

These young people are to be commended for mounting an especially wonderful evening of theater. For me, all members of the cast were excellent, and it was quite exciting to hear Lancelot played with a REAL French accent! Even Robert Goulet would be proud!

Peace, Love and Happiness...
