Post a clip from a movie that changed your life

This is from "About Schmidt". After the film, I decided to sponser a kid in Childreach. She is in China, and I often get drawings and letters from her.

This is the opening scene to Contact, which I saw at a time when I was having an inkling of a beginning to a thinking about...well...reality. This scene puts life into a humbling perspective.

1. From L.A. Confidential, the one that got me interested in film.
It was really the first time that I experienced a film being both artistic and entertaining.

20. None of the above
The movie effected me in a strange way ---

I read all of Thomas Harris's books and I think it added a new layer to my creativity.

If you haven't read the books -- you are doing yourself a disservice.

Some of the best writing ever... I mean - for fiction.

Some don't like "The Great Dictator", but I thought it was wonderful. The score was astounding.

8. Here's an extended bit of "La Commune"
It completely revitalised my faith in the human spirit and left-wing politics.

For the film LA COMMUNE we travel back in time to 1871. A journalist for Versailles Television broadcasts a soothing and official view of events while a Commune television is set up to provide the perspectives of the Paris rebels. On a stage-like set, more than 200 actors interpret characters of the Commune, especially the Popincourt neighborhood in the XIth arrondissement. They voice their own thoughts and feelings concerning the social and political reforms. The telling of this story rests primarily on depicting the people of the Commune, and those who suppressed them.

http://www.frif.com/new2002/la.html

THis is a scene near the end of the film, where the members of the Commune are defending it (ultimately unsuccessfully) from the State. The journalist is asking both the characters and the actors how they are feeling. I really don't know if this will work out of context (there's a lot of material preceeding this) but hopefully it'll give a sense of the film.

SOme kindly sole has uploaded what I believe to be the whole film (it's VERY long) to YouTube which you can find by searching for "reports from the paris commune". It's also available on DVD (with a documentary about the director, Peter Watkins) and well, well worth the investment.

Geoffrey Rush is quite the actor. I recently got "Shine" on DVD. Wonderful film, and a great performance by a then unknown.

In fact just the other day I was thinking about what an excellent prison warden you'd make. I've no doubt that returning inmate rates would drop. Until you were violently murdered during a prison riot, probably with one of the calligraphic pens you'd assigned to everyone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I71-MNZUMQI

:toast:

A movie about taking the least amount of crap possible from a world that wants to give you the greatest amount of crap possible.

A movie about the value of friendship.

A movie about courage.

A movie about having the courage to give up everything you have in order to have everything you want.
