Wow, it's been fifty years.
I remember this.
Are you old enough to remember Sputnik 1?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_1

Sputnik 1 (Russian: "Спутник-1", "Satellite-1", or literally
"Co-traveler-1" byname ПС-1 (PS-1, i.e. "Простейший Спутник-1",
or Elementary Satellite-1)) was the first artificial satellite
to be put into geocentric orbit. Launched by the Soviet Union on
4 October 1957, it was the first satellite of the Sputnik program.

1. Not right at that time because I was too young.
But several years later in elementary school and on the news I remember it seemed everyone was talking about it, worrying about those damned Ruskies.

3. Oh yeah I remember that buildup of fear-mongering.
I remember seeing plans for bomb shelters. Even today, there's a thrift store nearby with one of *'s fallout shelters. Didn't see any duct tape or plastic sheeting. lying around though.

5. I also remember people talking about having missiles pointed at them.
Like this town or that area was so important that the Soviets had missiles pointed at them. Very sick to think about it.

7. Anyone ever see October Sky?

Based on the book, Rocket Boys.

I was born sixteen months after Sputnik, but I remember the manned space program.
