Does anyone watch the show "Intervention" on A&E?
That is some heavy shit. I always feel weighed down after watching.

2. I saw a preview the other night
it looked like some woman with a really severe drinking problem. What happened?

I've watched the show a few times and have always felt grateful none of my family or friends have such severe problems.

3. I like to watch that show
though I used to watch it more when it was on Sundays. Actually, that used to be my favorite way of finishing the weekend--a white russian and an episode or two of intervention. (It seemed kind of perverse to have a cocktail while watching it, but it was both empowering and sobering.)

It is definitely some heavy shit, though. I often get very wrapped up in the stories. I wish it fit my schedule better nowadays ...

4. I watched it once. It was the episode
where this woman was a severe alcoholic. I think in North Carolina. She was such a drama queen, it was actually kinda funny in the beginning(in a sick way) but then it got really sad as the show wore on, I was crying in the end.

Oh wait I also watched the show about the guy from Three Dog Night and his son who was a heroin addict.

Very sad but honestly a show I don't watch unless there is nothing else on

5. I watched a couple of repeats this afternoon.
A teenage boy strung out on oxycontin and an anorexic young woman, both really sad cases. The woman is doing ok, but the boy got kicked out of one treatment center and left another one so he could be with his girlfriend.

9. I never mean to watch. It is too depressing. But yeah, if nothing
is on, I find myself watching this. And you can't just turn it. You have to know what happens.

6. Always watch
So often doesn't end like we'd like it to.

Several times lately the addicts have figured out that an intervention is fixing to happen. Seems like it's going to get harder and harder to surprise them.

20. I am honestly more addicted to the show about the little people
That one really would take an intervention to keep me from watching it.

8. I have found it very interesting, but like the animal cruelty shows...
it's always hard at the end when you find the person didn't stay with the program and/or the person is back in jail, or worse.

I like happy endings. They are hard to find in real life.

Color me optimistic....

Thanks for your post.

10. I can't for the life of me watch the animal cruelty shows.
It hurts me to the core. I don't care if justice is done, I can't stand to see a helpless animal starved, beaten, etc. I cry at those shows. I finally quit watching. Kudos to those who go in and arrest those asses, but I just can't make myself watch.

15. A woman staffer at the radio station expressed the same opinion.
She is involved with animals -- horses, mostly, and she has also assisted with cruelty cases.

They ran the Houston, New York, and Detroit episodes over and over. The people who work with these divisions are true angels.

How about "Dog" The Bounty Hunter?

16. Uggghhhh! Can't do that one either. But I do watch reruns of CSI:Miami.
That is about all I watch on A&E!

12. Watched it today.
Interesting show, but I have some issues with it. The whole thing feels REALLY staged, and contains a lot of propaganda about drugs that is simply not true. I'm sure we can all agree that when addiction comes, terrible, terrible things can happen, but they fail to acknowledge that drugs aren't always bad. They have the power to do great and terrible things.

However, as terrible as it is, I was laughing today when he went to his intervention meeting and was completely strung out. It's a sad truth what it can do to people though.

13. The last one I watched was one about gambling and then about shopping.
It seems to cover any and all addictions. I root for a happy ending, but usually it doesn't work that way.

and for me, it's not anything I'm interested in watching on TV.

18. I know what you mean.
As a pastoral counselor I remain baffled why this is something that even needs to be made into a television show.

17. I see the previews for it when I watch CSI Miami from 1-2....
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 09:38 PM by Pacifist Patriot
It's my brain candy Monday - Friday. I'm afraid to watch Intervention because one day I might see myself on it.

Seriously though, it strikes too close to home in terms of the pastoral counseling I do. I really don't need to add to the human misery I am trying to alleviate. I really do not understand why this show is one. It takes voyeurism to a level I don't think is appropriate.

19. there was one episode in particular that was the hardest to watch imo, it was a girl
about 18-20, she was blond and very thin and she drank all day and you knew watching the episode there was no way she was going to get help, her Dad rented her an apartment that she quickly turned into a garbage dump. I watched with a feeling a dread through the whole thing.

22. You know I never really thought of that. I don't know why I haven't.
These people do agree to do a documentary about their addiction but they don't know an intervention is coming. You really do have a point.

It hardly ever has a happy ending either. Most of the people fall off of the wagon. The only positive thing I guess is they see how they look. But I guess you can do that without putting it on national TV.

23. Ok, I'll admit I watch it.
Not on a regular basis, but I try to catch the reruns. Most of the things said about it are true. It is kind of exploitive, and it is pretty heavy, and something people haven't brought up-more often than not, it's GROSS. Still, it draws me in.

Some people agree to do a public intervention because they really are at the end of their rope and have no finances for treatment. That stuff is incredibly expensive, and the cheaper ones have a long waiting list. The show makes a bargain, if you let us film it, we'll pay for it. Sucks, but there's our healthcare system. I don't know why the rest do it.

It's hard to rate, but the worst one was probably Cristy. A young, skinny, badly-dyed blonde woman whose brain has turned to swiss cheese from doing meth (and alcohol). She thinks she is God and writes bizarre calculations in her journal. When she's not stripping and asking strange men to buy her alcohol while half-naked. Her residence is a pig-stuy and she forgets to eat for days at a time. You can watch a clip here:

http://www.aetv.com/intervention/int_episode_guide.jsp?episode=180902

The thing I really don't like, they only spend about three minutes on the recovery, post-treatment profile. I'd like to see a little more of that.

24. I agree. I wish there was more on the recovery.
They don't show enough of that. I always feel sick after watching it. You really see what addictions do to the families and friends. Really tough.

26. I think the reason that there isn't more on the recovery is because..
Many of the episodes are only filmed a couple of months before they are aired. I think that they dont want to show the first month of the person not using drugs, and act as if it were a success, when its more likely that they will relapse several months after treatment.

28. well since we are bringing up other A&E shows
my favorite is The First 48

I am fascinated with that show. I absolutely love it. It just floors me how senseless these murders always are. And I hate to say it but most of them are either Black or Latinos. Why are we doing this to ourselves? This is what the repukes want to keep the minorities killing each other, poor and uneducated. It is a way of oppression and keeping us down so we cannot join forces together along with Caucasians and make the proper changes. Sorry for the rant........
