I'm either really hip or delusional.
I think I like the top 40 pop music of today better than the stuff hitting the charts when I was in my teens and twenties.

Pink
Fergie
Plain White T's
Green Day
Maroon 5
Matchbox Twenty
Nickelback
Lifehouse

I realize this is probably commercial crap, but it's better commercial crap than what I got when I was clubbing age. Drives my son nuts that we like the same stuff. Imagine his distress at finding we both like Aerosmith and Pink Floyd and Green Day and Pink. I was caught between the two.

Oh, and what is with The Pussycat Dolls? Just learned about them and love their stuff. Of course my husband is thrilled given the pictures of these ladies. I guess they have something for everyone.

Yes, I like Nickelback. They remind me of the idiots I hung around with when I was in high school. I will never claim they are decent musicians. But darnit they could be the dumbasses I got into trouble with over two decades ago. Ouch! It's a nostalgia thing.

Actually, most of my favorite musicians performed from the '40s to the '70s, some in the '80s, and a few (mostly hip-hop, because it's such a young genre) from the '90s and present day.

You are so right though. Music took a huge nose dive when I was "coming of age." In fact, the coming of age movies set in my generation's time frame are musical farces.

the Beatles and The Stones to Pink and Green Day. They even send me songs and my youngest
is always bugging to me listen to his newest cd! :D Music is the universal language.

and he has stuck with it and even won scholarships for college in state music
competitions. He now is writing music and is trying to cut a cd and plays in
a band! He plays five instruments, last I heard. ;)

I don't believe in forcing a child to do something he detests so I let him give it up. You either relish the challenge or you don't. I cannot embrace the idea that technical ability equates with passion. If one of my children is going to excel musically it is because they feel called to it.

He has begun to beg for guitar lessons. If I detect sincerity I have a Spanish classical guitarist in mind for his teacher.

You must be so proud of your son. That is absolutely amazing and I am in awe of him. Composition is not an easy thing. I wish him much success!! Music is truly a gift to humankind.

I honestly believe the best musicians are those who never manage to get a contract. A true loss to the rest of us. We have a local band who is just amazing. They will never ever attract the attention of a record promoter. Much the pity to humanity.

59. There is that.
Notice I was directly referencing pop music. When I put in a CD for my listening pleasure it's more likely to be something along the likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Juan Diego or Katie Webster. I certainly hope no one thinks my comparison between hit songs of today and the hit songs when I was coming of age constitutes the sum of my musical tastes.

there is tons of great music out there today. The problem is that it doesn't make it on the radio. Bad music has always existed, but we only remember the good stuff. My fear is that because it didn't get enough exposure the good music from now won't be remembered by enough people.

46. oh boy. music threads always draw me like a moth to fire.
Pink: more like 'Stink' har har.
Fergie: 'My Humps' was written by Satan himself as a means of torturing us poor mortals on earth.
Plain White T's: not familiar with them.
Green Day: They're alright. Saying anything critical about them will lead to my premature death by kagehime. :P I like a lot of their stuff.
Maroon 5: And she willlllll be loved  reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. and that is why i will forever hate their music with a flaming passion :grr:
Matchbox Twenty: When Rob Thomas recorded the shit-tacular 'Smooth' with Santana, the corpse of Rock was dug up, violated, and unceremoniously dumped back in the ground without the benefit of a decent burial. Santana's collaboration with Everlast, 'Put Your Lights On,' was easily 1,000,000 times better. Matchbox Twenty would probably be acceptable if they weren't fronted by Rob Thomas, who is a grade a superdouche.
Nickelback: Take everything I said about Matchbox Twenty and multiply it by a million. This is one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Wesley Willis would look at them incredulously and say, 'Are you serious?' Lame, recycled songs. Agonizingly constipated vocals from the king of big-nosed lameness, Chad Kroger. Lyrics that might as well have been scribbled in crayon. They have all of this and more.
Lifehouse: I really like 'Somewhere in Between'...it's the only song of theirs I know.

You like Pink Floyd? They're just about the best band ever, but the thought of listening to Pink Floyd AND Nickelback makes me
Aerosmith is one of the most horrific bands to stumble drunkenly out of the classic rock era.
The Pussycat Dolls? They make music? I thought they just made soundtracks for their line of porno movies.

:hide:
I love hating on music people love. It's what makes me such a terrible person.
Pink Floyd's great, though. At least we have that in common. :hide:

Except for Time and Wish You Were Here.

The rest of it bites the big one.

Oh, and Comfortably Numb.

The rest of it? Bah. About as enjoyable as a dentist's drill.

57. Oh no. Not the Nickelback wars again ( I love them)
But I'm the only one, other than you..
We will just have to slink away in a corner to listen.
BTW; they put on a GREAT live show!!

65. i hated nickelback even BEFORE that link was sent to me long ago...
and hearing that only reenforced it.
how lame does a band have to be to rip THEMSELVES off?
at least copy someone worth copying.

66. i had once upon a time thought there is no good modern music...
but then i discovered, through the help of a coworker, sage francis, buck 65, buddy wakefield, neko case, the new pornographers, emily haines, madvillain, dj shadow, cut chemist, el producto, aesop rock, belle and sebastian, the eels, modest mouse...and many more.
this is in addition to radiohead, which i already love.

They just may give Nickelback a run for their money!

68. Creed at least had the courtesy to self-destruct.
But Nickelback keeps going with the endurance of Keith Richards. :puke:

69. There's only one Creed song I like. Don't worry...
I suspect Nickelback will not be around nearly as long as Keith Richards.

73. If it helps at all....
"Paint It Black" is the only Rolling Stones song I can tolerate. That is a band I truly cannot listen to. I would generally prefer a well aimed ice pick to the ear drums than listening to Mick Jagger's whiny voice.

74. The following Rolling Stones songs are not crimes against humanity...
'Paint it Black' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' 'Angie' 'Ruby Tuesday' 'She Smiled Sweetly' 'Gimme Shelter' 'Sympathy for the Devil'
That is all.

76. I have to argue with you about Angie.
I feel sorry for every girl named Angie. That was an unmitigated piece of musical shit. And if you have given me an earworm because of your mention of it I will curse you into the next few millenia.

81. I kind of like Maroon 5.
Actually, if asked to, I couldn't name a single member of the band... But the song "she will be loved" makes me smile.

82. Love Pink...
Like Green Day and Matchbox 20 too...though Matchbox 20 is more nineties rock/pop than 21st century stuff.

87. I like a mix of the well-known and indie
I think there is merit in each. I am quite open-minded when it comes to music.
