The Da Vinci Code
I cannot put this book down. I started it at 3am last night, when I was feeling pretty tired, but I didn't stop until 10am:crazy: when I was absolutely exhausted. I'm gonna go finish it now. What are everyone's thoughts on this book? If you haven't read it, go out and get it now!

2. Finished it yesterday
Loved it! Yes it was very hard to put down. I am spending my time now surfing the net checking out some of the claims made in the book.

So far, the religion stuff is blurry. Plenty if it is made up just for the plot. The math and Da Vinci stuff is pretty dead on and from what I can tell plenty of the symbolism is also correct. The Hopi legend stuff is true and I almost dropped the book when he mentioned Koyanisquatsi. Even though it is a great book of fiction, it has plenty of truths to it. It is a pretty ground breaking book, for sure.

3. I also found "The DaVinci Code" to be a page-turner.

But as I mulled it over after I had finished reading it, I began to think it is merely a Michael Crighton-esque rehash of Umberto Eco's "Foucault Pendulum", written with one eye on the potential for movie rights.

7. I had a similar reaction
I thought "Da Vinci Code" had a great, exciting plot and was a very satisfying leisure read, despite the fact that I didn't find the actual prose to be terribly outstanding. And, by the time I was halfway through it, I started to get a slight deja vu feeling, which I realized had to do with the novel's similarities to "Foucault's Pendulum." The overall structure of the plot is similar, and there's some common subject matter as well, though "Pendulum" is somewhat more complex and wide-ranging in the areas of knowledge it deals with. I agree with you about the movie rights; I can't imagine a satisfying movie being made from "Foucault's Pendulum" -- heck, I didn't understand a lot of its references because I'm not familiar with the history it references, and I shudder to think what Hollywood would come up with -- but I think "The Da Vinci Code" would make a really good movie. Not as much nuance and esoteric reference to be filtered out.

4. You might also want to check out The Templar Revelation
It was mentioned in The Da Vinci Code. It's a pretty educational read, too, once you get about 80 pages into it.

I found The Da Vinci Code to be a real page-turner, also. It is quite revealing on a lot of different levels, in addition to making one think about religion and faith. It will make a pretty interesting movie when it comes out.

5. heh heh - just remember it's fiction
and while a compelling read, there is much of fiction in it (as it is a novel, not an attempt at real history, as the author plainly states and admits). I'm just amazed at the people who take it as "all true" and start running around with all sorts of "new ideas" about the "Catholic Conspiracy" or whatever topic du jour they decide to latch on to from the book. Not many are doing it, but enough to be noticable, and this absolutely not to say or imply that you are - but I offer the warning just in case.
