I have a $20 gift card for iTunes. What should I get? |
|
One of my presents for my birthday last month was a $20 giftcard for iTunes. I have a 4gb iPod nano 2nd edition. I like all kinds of music but never listen to top-40 stations so I have no idea who/what is popular. I'm a child of the 60s, so that music is especially close to my heart. Any advice?

5. "The Awakening" is a keeper! |

How about some funk? There was an article in yesterday's NYT about a band called Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Check 'em out--they're absolutely awesome!

6. Well, it depends on what kind of '60s music you like. |
|
There's a lot of current artists who are heavily '60s-influenced. If you liked psychedelia, Of Montreal would be up your alley. If you liked motown girl groups, check out the Pipettes. If you liked soul, Amy Winehouse is tearing up the charts. If you liked '60s pop-rock, try The Apples in Stereo or the New Pornographers. If you were more into hard blues-rock, the Black Keys can channel Hendrix at times. If you loved Simon and Garfunkel, give Belle and Sebastian a listen.
Of course, you can't go wrong with simply finding a few of your old favorites and downloading them. Look through old Billboard lists to rediscover names you haven't thought of in years.

7. If you are a child of the 60's get the new Steve Earle album. |
|
You'll like it. The song "City of Immigrants" is great, as well as the rest of the CD.
It's called "Washington Square Serenade."

9. How about some Jason Mraz? |
|
Jason Mraz is a "singer-songwriter," but he ain't singing coffeehouse ballads--this guy sings faster than Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. And he sings really good songs. Try these three: The Remedy (I Won't Worry): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb-73iU6ubQYou and I Both: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTUfx2p69zYWordplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TDcQdgGi5U
