We try and catch it every week. Dr Who is more of a kid's show, and Torchwood is certainly more for adults. That is kind of an apples and oranges sort of comparison, really. This most recent Dr Who has been kind of a step up in terms of production values and performances (at least this Dr Who doesn't dress like Captain Kangaroo like that one old one did!) but it is still using the short 6 story arcs and the campy stuff.
Torchwood certainly has a rougher edge to it--even down to the language. It has done some nice little tie ins to Dr Who. I loved last night's Torchwood show with the Cyberwoman--they tied to the Dr Who Cybermen pretty neatly! They even built on that Dr. Who history as a plot device for the show.
Torchwood has more sexual references and certainly more violence (they use a lotta blood--have you noticed that?) and I suspect that in the long run that may limit the run of the show. It isn't for everyone the way Dr Who has been...
I think they are just different, really. Both fun, but really different in spite of the similar themes.
Regards!

It's pitch as an 'adult' show. For 'adult' I was hoping for more intricate stories.
Quite the contrary, the plots are as pedestrian as they come, and the 'adult' content is merely exaggerated sexuality.
Yawn.
Episode 2, the orgasm devouring monster, is so shallow and incoherent it defies description...
I'm hoping series 2 will be better, what with Martha Jones ending up in it and all... her character turned the new Doctor Who series into something good...

5. I love Torchwood! It's silly fun. |
|
It's not as polished or as good as Doctor Who, but I think it's silly, vulgar fun. Here's a youtube video that reviews the most important concepts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlboOGbM94c . And this one has some mild spoilers and character overviews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu4mFV3TxTo

7. no, I don't think it's as good, it's a different animal |
|
also it is much more violent and gory, IMO.
It's very clever and makes good points. But it's a tad too cynical for me, despite my love of Capt. Jack.
