2. poke them in the side and make them wake up
long term they need to lose weight, never sleep on their back, reduce or quit alcohol, and they may need a sleep study/CPAPs device for sleeping if they still snore

5. Stab them in the neck.
It will kill them, but the snoring stops at least.

15. I read a news piece about a woman who accidentally killed her boyfriend
His snoring was so obnoxious that she stuck tampons up his nose while he was asleep and he suffocated. Cracked me up.

21. Those would have to be awfully small tampons
Or an awfully big nose.

But this isn't logical: people only snore with their mouths open (try snoring with your mouth closed to test this). Plugging a nose would make it worse. This does not sound like a plausible story. I suspect sexual kinkiness or deliberate homicide.

They used to advertise those strips that held one's nostrils open to prevent snoring. I always wondered how well they worked.

7. Talk to an Ear, Nose & Throat doc.
Sometimes resection of the soft palate helps, but not always. They really should be referred for a sleep study to see if more stuff's going on there.

11. this is a good suggestion
Sometimes there's sleep apnea present and that can be very bad for your longterm health. One of my exes has apnea and snored so loudly that I couldn't ever sleep over. He finally got a CPAP machine and I was astounded by the difference. Plus he says his quality of sleep has improved dramatically and his overall quality of life is better. Seriously raves about how miraculous it was for him. My most recent BF had surgery where they trimmed away excess tissue. I don't know what he was like before the surgery but his snoring was pretty mild after the surgery.

A visit with an ENT doctor is a good place to start but even before the visit try to pay attention if you notice any pauses in breathing because that will be helpful for them to know. Good luck!

12. Have them sleep on their side
A few years ago I went on a trip with my buddy who warned me he was a bad snorer. He would stop breathing for 10-15 seconds then have a giant snore. I said - dude- you have sleep apnea.

So we got back, he did the sleep study and everything. They ended up resecting his soft palate, taking his tonsils out and a bunch of other stuff.

So, if snoring is real bad, go see an ENT.

Or if not real bad, just poke them.

13. pillows, wedges, nose strips
plus other good sleep hygiene can help in some cases. depends on why they snore.
but, get one of those pillows, and wedge up the head of the bed. it can help.
take it seriously, tho. apnea is a dangerous thing, both to physical and mental health.

14. tennis ball to the back
was deemed cheap and effective. I was just reading the shopping column at Slate. There's a sleep apnea thread in the Health forum I was reading, so that's what made me go looking.

Anyway the recommendation was to attach a tennis ball to your pyjama back to keep you from lying on your back and snoring. It hurts, therefore, you train yourself to only sleep on your side and not snore.

Getting a CPAP machine to fix my sleep apnea was the only thing that gave my wife peace, finally.

19. Snoring can be dangerous in some cases
It may be a symptom of sleep apnea, which can have detrimental consequences. Fortunately, there are very good treatments for apnea now.

Another treatment I have heard of sounds rather silly, but it was to tape a tennis ball to the back of the snoring person, so that they tend to sleep on one side or on the stomach, which is said to reduce snoring.

Snoring can be an indication of obstructed breathing--that is why it sometimes is something to be concerned about.
