Arrogant Cubs fans?
Yesterday, there were some people who could not let us Cubs fans enjoy the victory without raining on our parade. Some of them posted about so-called arrogant Cubs fans.

I was driving back from Naperville tonight, and I listened again to the Cubs sports show on WGN. I had forgotten that after the Cubs clinched, WGN started taking phone calls and e-mails from Cubs fans all over the world. Tonight, they recapped, mentioning the calls from the Denali forest, Australia and Europe. They mentioned the e-mails from as far away as Shanghai.

Tell me again how all Cubs fans are arrogant suburbanites and rich frat boy types? Tell me how all Cubs fans fit a stereotype? It appears to me that Cubs Nation spans the world.

I have been gracious to other winning baseball teams' fans. I have tried to congratulate them and share their joy. I have commiserated with this years Mets' fans. I think most Cubs fans are like me in that respect. I think we always have been.

I read the threads congratulating the other baseball teams that have clinched their divisions. I did not see the snotty posts in those threads that I saw about the Cubs. Some comments about the Cubs resembled some of the Hillary posts I see at DU. Her supporters can provide all the links and quotes in the world, but the Hillary haters insist on coming in with their drive-by criticisms. Is primary fever like a virus at DU? Does in infect everyone, even the people who come to the lounge to have fun and talk about other things?

I am not a Hillary supporter. I don't know whom to support yet. But I will continue to support my Cubs, no matter what happens for the rest of October. And I will continue to be gracious to other baseball fans here, no matter what the final outcome.

1. Some people always have to rain on other folks' parades. I wouldn't call myself
a *fan* per se, just because I'm not that into sports, but if I were to root for a team it would be the Cubs. I'm neither a suburbanite (4800N and 2100W) nor a frat boy. So go figure.

You have your fun and let the haters wallow in their negativity. :hi:

2. Don't let it get to you. It's a GAME, after all.
(By the way, I was very happy to see your Cubs with their division.)

3. Hey, although I am a Twins fan, I am celebrating the Cubs being in the playoffs!
I like the Cubbies. My favorite ballpark (other than the no longer in existence Met Stadium) is Wrigley Field.

I want to see the Cubs win the World Series, and frankly, I think it is the White Sox fans who are arrogant.

4. I don't remember anybody in any way implying that all cubs fans are anything
some people just stated that some cubs fans are arrogant. I, for one, was very clear that I didn't mean all or even most, and I was not alone in that.

Every team has some fans who are jerks. That's just the nature of things.

I would like nothing more than the Cubs to win it all this year.

6. WTF? Cubs fans are in no way, shape, or form arrgoant when compared to Yankees and Sox fans.
Whoever said this has obviously never been to an MLB game where the Yankees are the visiting team.

9. Yes, Yankees fans can be arrogant.
But don't they have something like twenty-six world championships?

Maybe that gives them a reason to be arrogant. Arrogance is a New York City stereotype, too.

The last time I was in New York City was 2003. I went there for a concert my daughter was playing. We did lots of tourist things, and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. I like New York City. But I thought it was a changed place after September 11. Tourism was still down. Many of the natives expressed gratitude for the nationwide and worldwide support they received after the attack.

I haven't been back since. I hope they all hate Bush. He and all the repukes have milked 9/11 and grabbed power by climbing the rubble and the dead bodies of New Yorkers. So has Rudy. Most of them seemed to hate Rudy when I was there.

I have never been to a Yankees game. I would like to do that some time, just for the experience.

8. Well I think it is all good my friend.

Just a little misunderstanding yesterday really. A poster was talking very specifically about fratboy types in a college town, and another about the same type who never grow up. It was really my own problem of wrapping my brain around a concept so foreign (and anti-everything Cub I've ever known) to me. But I do see where they were coming from. I've since made friends with the posters that I had argued with. I really don't think they were trying to rain on our parade.

Anyway, that Hillary cannot make up her mind about the Cubs! Sheesh just call yerself a Yankee fan and get it over with. I much preferred Obama's answer that he was a White Sox fan to Hillary's hedge on the Cubs. Still a Kooch man for now myself.

Anyway, it's all good IMO so let's just enjoy the ride starting tomorrow night. GO CUBS GO!! :toast:

I know the Rockies play the early game, and I'll miss most of it, but hopefully I'll be home in time for the rest of the slate. I know most of my students this semester are Cubs fans (and not of the frat boy type ;)), so I'll be pulling for 'em partly for their sake :)

12. She was never a true Cubs fan if she can switch
her allegiance to the Yankees so easily. I think being a Cubs fan is a womb to tomb thing.

I have cheered for the White Sox and gone to their games. But my husband is a White Sox fan. I do it for him. And I was genuinely happy for Chicago and all the White Sox fans in 2005.

My family moved to the Chicago area right after the 1959 World Series. Although I was already a Cubs fan, I followed that series closely, and attended some White Sox games the following season. Old Comiskey Park was great. I saw Early Wynn pitch. I waited eagerly for his 300th win. I loved Minnie Minoso.

In old Comiskey Park, there was an area under the seats that had picnic tables. Fans could go there early to have lunch. We did that one time. Minnie Minoso, Luis Aparicio and Nelly Fox came over and talked to us. After one game, when we were sitting along the 3rd base line, Minnie Minoso came over and said hello to us. His English was almost nonexistent, but he was very nice.

I appreciated those interactions. I was only eleven, but I knew I was witnessing baseball history.

After that year, I followed only the Cubs. My brothers still followed the White Sox for awhile, but they were Cubs fans at heart, and still are. My husband's love for the White Sox comes from his heart, too. He is nice about the Cubs, but only out of family loyalty.

If I were in Hillary's position, I would have said, "I will support the Mets, the Yankees and all the other New York teams. I will cheer for them and attend their games. But my first love will always be the Chicago Cubs."

I think most sports fans would appreciate that kind of loyalty and honesty.

I am done talking about Hillary now. The Cubs will be occupying my attention for the next few days.

16. Wow you've seen some cool stuff!
My family is intertwined with the Cubs on both sides. Dad picked the Cubs as a boy to the chagrin of my Cardinal fan Grandpa. Mom's family is from Chicago not too far from Wrigley Field. My cousin still lives in the house that my Grandma was born in. We were just there a couple of weeks ago and took the Addison St bus to Wrigley. Tix are too expensive for us though, so we just watch the games in the bars anymore. Hope to go back for the World Series and celebrate in the streets!

17. I've seen some cool stuff at Wrigley Field, too.
I used to attend lots of games in the 1960's. I have an Ernie Banks autograph. He always came early to the games to talk to the kids. He was gracious to all the fans.

I saw Willie Mays hit two home runs there, in the same game. He was something to watch.

I have a hat that Ron Santo autographed. He still autographs everything for the fans, and he does not charge for his autograph. I saw him after a game two years ago. He was standing with the help of two canes, and an assistant was with him. He autographed my daughters' ticket stubs. He must have seen the way I was looking at him, with memories in my eyes. He said hello to me in a very nice way, and I told him that I was glad that another generation of fans was getting to know him. He thanked me for that.

Remember that? The heart of the order: Williams, Santo and Banks.

Tickets are very hard to obtain these days. Every once in awhile, my son gets some for us by standing in line. It is a once a year thing, though, because of the cost. And now and then, my youngest daughter gets them for us. She works for a law firm downtown, where all the partners are good Democrats. They know how hard I work out here to make things blue. They give me a couple of Cubs tickets now and then. They also support my fundraising for Democrats in this part of Illinois.

I know I have seen some memorable Cubs pitching and hitting over the years: Ryne Sandberg, Jodie Davis, Sutter. I just can't remember it all right now.

23. The '69 Cubs were my dad's team, so I know all about them
even if I didn't see 'em play. Dad was an original Bleacher Bum and I don't remember NOT being a Cub fan. He died when I was 10 so forgive me if I get a bit defensive about people ripping on my Cubs, they are intertwined with my dad's memory. I want the Cubs to win for people like you Muriel. My dad and Steve Goodman never even saw the Cubs play in the playoffs their entire lives. Your generation is what Cub fans are all about IMO. I think Goodman speaks to the attitude of the lot of you and it is to be admired and not ridiculed.

First game I attended was vs the Pirates in '78 or '79, but I was a little too young to remember what happened. I do remember going to a Cubs/Expos double header in '80. Dad told me that Andre Dawson was one of the best baseball players in the game- he would later be my fave player of course. Rick Reuschel started one of the games and Bruce Sutter closed it. I remember that because my dad and another fan were arguing over whether or not they would bring in Sutter. This was before a manager automatically brought in his closer for the 9th. Sutter got in the game and ended it 1-2-3.

Fave game I went to was vs Pirates in '92. Sosa homered to tie it and Sandberg hit a walk-off. We celebrated like it was the WS! I guess I could see someone getting offended with that, but it certainly wasn't meant to be offensive.

I met Ernie Banks at a golf tournament and got his autograph when I was 11, it really meant a lot to me. I approached him as he was about to T off on the second T. Hey Ernie 'Let's play 2!' I told him. I thought it was clever, but I think he hears that one a lot! Ernie is the personification of the franchise IMO. The sunniest attitude ever.

Let's get started tonight! And thank goodness we have each other to celebrate or commizerate with no matter the outcome! GO CUBS GO!

13. Thanks Husker

And no I certainly never meant to imply that ALL Cubs fans are any way. Hell I have PLENTY of friends & family who are Cubs fans. But seriously, the OP needs to come to my college town - she'll be embarassed by THOSE Cubs fans, I guarantee. And unfortunately, they're the Cub fans I happen to encounter on a daily basis, so you'll all have to forgive me if they've embittered me.

And if she's surprised by my comments she really ought to check out a thread regarding the Yankees or the Red Sox... geez talk about haters... they make the Cubs-Cards rivalry look like tee ball.

24. Ah, thank you WildEyed!
I meant to respond last night but it got late quick!

Anyway, I'm glad that we understand each other. No bad intentions in either direction my friend. An arrogant Cub fan was as foreign to me as an arrogant ISU Cyclone fan. But the Cyclone fan is probably a farmer from Barnesville Iowa, whereas a Cub fan could be a backwardhatted fratDB from Aurora! Barnesville isn't generally known for it's residents copping a 'tude if you know what I mean, combine that with a sports record of gloom and you've little chance of arrogant fans. There is a difference there and I should have recognized it sooner.

DU is such a wonderful place. I admit that I was kinda upset, but DU is a place where reasonable (ie non Repug) people gather. Reason tends to win and I think it did here too. Glad to be your friend WildEyed. You better go have one last celebration while yer Birds are still the champs!

Peace

18. Every team has its share of great fans and its share of idiot fans
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 01:20 AM by LSdemocrat
Unfortunately at times like this the idiot fans of many teams tend to be the loudest given the euphoria of making the playoffs. The Cubbies, coming from one of the larger fan bases, tend to be more visible due to sheer numbers. Also at this time the fans of teams who did not make the playoffs can be more easily riled due to the dashed expectations of not making the playoffs. Sadly given the size of most National League cities, Cub fans tend to be quite visible, and similarly to business experiences, one bad experience can ruin someone's outlook.

In the interests of full disclosure, I'm a Cardinals fans and one of the things I've always appreciated about the Cards-Cubs rivalry is that it is an actual rivalry and not a hatefest as is the case with the Yankees and Red Sox.

Also, in no way should my kind words be construed as a wish that the Cubs win anything this postseason (Edited to add: unless the Cubs end up playing the Red Sox or Yankees, then even I will wholeheartedly cheer for the Cubbies).

20. Hey! I was happy for the Cards when they won last year.
That was partly because they were not expected to win. Some other teams had better records. It was also because they are a National League team, and I favor the National League.

My biggest reason was that they are a Midwestern team. Those stupid network people are so stymied by "flyover country." They know only about the cities and teams that are on the edges of the country. They never seem to know anything about our players. One can always tell that when they talk about our cities, someone else has done the research for them. They stumble as they repeat what they are reading, just like Bush with his phonetically marked speeches. Do they ever GO anywhere in those cities, outside of the ballpark, their hotels, or their hotel bars?

I like it best when two teams in the middle of the country are playing in the World Series or the Super Bowl. The networks really display their ignorance then. And they are forced to acknowledge us! They are forced to acknowledge that sometimes our teams are superior!
