6. I run into this thought a lot.
As an exercise:
make a list of Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Senators, and Representatives since the end of WWII.
Put a star next to the name if they did some time in the armed forces.
Then convince me they did any better (or worse) at their jobs than the ones who didn't.

For followup:
Look up "Fundamental Attribution Error".

J,
feeling cranky today

stop the deportation proceedings against the woman whose husband is being deployed for the third time in 4 years. She was brought illegally to the USA when she was 5 years old and faces deportation while he is away. She had no choice in what her parents did when she was five. This couple have small children who are US citizens.

It's horrible what they are doing to this family.

This was on TV this morning. I will post a link if I find one online.

Edited to add: This is *not* the case of the wife of the US soldier that is missing in Iraq. This is a different case. The wife of the US soldier missing in Iraq has had the deportation proceedings against her dropped.

8. I think this was done back during the civil war as well
Then it was primarily Irish immigrants who were the alleged beneficiaries of such a provision.

11. It is an interesting concept
And it has been tried before.

The Spartans, the Aztecs, the French (foreign legion).

It could work.

Heinlein wasn't totally off the wall.

15. Got a bug problem, ma'am?
The movie was fun, despite the fascist overtones.
Leave it to Heinlein and Veerhoeven to glorify fascism.
