Poll question: Best punk band ever not named "The Clash"
No "Other" category included to accomodate the maximum 10 slots. Fans of The Exploited, Reagan Youth, AFI, Pennywise, The Minutemen, The Damned, Circle Jerks, The Germs, X, etc. commence bitching below. (note: Ian MacKaye projects Minor Threat and Fugazi combined to save one more slot in the hope that doing so will reduce more bitching than it will cause)

52. Greetings:This is the Secretary of War at the State Department
of the United States

We have a problem.

The companies want something done about this sluggish world economic situation. Profits have been running a little thin lately and we need to stimulate some growth.

Now we know there's an alarmingly high number of young people roaming around in your country with nothing to do but stir up trouble for the police and damage private property.

It doesn't look like they'll ever get a job.

It's about time we did something constructive with these people. We've got thousands of 'em here too. They're crawling all over.

The companies think it's time we all sit down, have a serious get-together-And start another war.

The President?

He loves the idea! All those missiles streaming overhead to and fro, napalm, people running down the road, skin on fire

The Soviets seem up for it:

The Kremlin's been itching for the real thing for years.

Hell, Afghanistan's no fun So whadya say?

We don't even have to win this war.

We just want to cut down on some of this excess population

Now look. Just start up a draft; draft as many of those people as you can. We'll call up every last youngster we can get our hands on,
hand 'em some speed, give 'em an hour or two to learn how to use an automatic rifle and send 'em on their way

Libya? El Salvador? How 'bout Northern Ireland? Or a "moderately repressive regime" in South America?

We'll just cook up a good Soviet threat story in the Middle East-we need that oil.

We had Libya all ready to go and Colonel Khadafy's hit squad didn't even show up. I tell ya that man is unreliable.

The Kremlin had their fingers on the button just like we did for that one. Now just think for a minute-We can make this war so big-so BIG!

The more people we kill in this war, the more the economy will prosper. We can get rid of practically everybody on your dole queue if we plan this right.

Take every loafer on welfare right off our computer rolls. Now don't worry about demonstrations-just pump up your drug supply.
So many people have hooked themselves on heroin and amphetamines since we took over, it's just like Vietnam. We had everybody so busy with LSD they never got too strong. Kept the war functioning just fine

It's easy.

We've got our college kids so interested in beer they don't even care if we start manufacturing germ bombs again.

Put a nuclear stockpile in their back yard, they wouldn't even know what it looked like.

So how 'bout it? Look-War is money.

The arms manufacturers tell me unless we get our bomb factories up to full production the whole economy is going to collapse

The Soviets are in the same boat.

We all agree the time has come for the big one, so whadya say?!?

That's excellent. We knew you'd agree

The companies will be very pleased.

My war you're one of them You say that you're my
friend But you're one of them You don't want to
see me live You don't want me to give cause you're
one of them My war you're one of them You say that
you're my friend But you're one of them I might
not know what a friend is All I know is what
you're not cause you're one of them My war you're
one of them You say that you're my friend But
you're one of them I have a prediction, it lives
in my brain It's with me every day, it drives me
insane I feel it in my heart, that if I has a gun
I feel it in my heart, I'd wanna kill some I feel
it in my heart, the end will come Come on! My war
you're one of them You say that you're my friend
But you're one of them Tell me that I'm wrong Try
to sing me your ego song You're one of them My war
you're one of them You say that you're my friend
But you're one of them My War.

The Pistols were alright, but they owed any musical quality to Glen Matlock's writing. Otherwise, they were basically average shock rockers with bondage pants.

69. Hey it wouldn't be punk rock without a little bit of slammin' into
other! Somebody had to start it or we'd be standing around tappin' our feet and bobbin' our heads like the hippies.

I don't hate the Clash, just like about 50 other punk bands better. I got turned on to punk in the mid 80s and had heard at least a dozen other punk bands before I heard them. Hearing them for the first time, I was expecting the 'only band that mattered' etc and found that I liked plenty of other bands much more instead.

I hate Johnny Rotten for 'New York (Dolls)'. Dolls are ma boys (er girls?) Thunders got 'em back pretty good with 'London Boys'.

25. Glad someone else said it first
due to their having copied the Clash to a debatable extent, but they're great in their own right; and Out Come the Wolves is the best album ( album?? oops, my age is showing) of the 90's. To me it sounded like since the Clash stopped making great Clash albums, Rancid made one instead but about their own lives and times. God bless em for that. Hope I'm not pissing off any Rancid fans by talking about "copying", I really love them AND respect them; have seen em twice and if they ever come back to Albuquerque, I'll sure as hell be there again. And I'm FIFTY SIX years old. I saw only one other person my age at the show last year---my friends' and contemporaries' loss... If you love great , intelligent and committed rock and roll, it don't get no better (although I hope I get to see the E street band on this tour---don't get no better than that either).

90. The con was also Lydon, a longtime krautrock fan, willing to play...
rockandroll (which he deplored) as a vehicle for his brilliantly nihilistic viewpoint. And , of course, the end result was one of the greatest rockandroll bands ever. All the time declaring how much he despised rockandroll.
McLaren may have suffered under the delusion that they were his "creation", but they quickly slipped out of his grasp and became far more the product of Lydon and Steve Jones (the artist and the thug)
Also, another brilliant con was reforming the band in the 90s. This was not only a crass attempt to cash in , but also a deliberate ploy to destroy that "special moment in time" legend of the Pistols. And it was pretty successful. No sentimentality.

If find the "Monkees" accusations leveled at them to be unfair. The sainted Clash were even more of a calculated prefab enterprise. It's as if Bernie Rhodes sat down and said; "What will appeal to rock critics and those who share their sensibilities? Hmmm? How about a band that traffics in Leftist sloganeering, reggae, American R&B, rockabilly, and a homoerotic appreciation of Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Monty Clift? That will hit our target audience!" Yes, indeed.

92. Yes you got it as usual Mitch.
You know I'm just a bitter old Dolls fan weary of their place as a Sex Pistol's footnote in the RnR history book. Every Pistol makes clear his love for the Dolls, except Rotten who kicked 'em when they were down and out. In a perverse way, I think that is pretty cool- what else could you expect? Maybe Rotten IS a genius.

I follow you about the reunion and such... a seemless transition from the 'ever feel like you've been ripped-off' goodbye in San Fran back in the 70s. They laughed all the way to the bank, twice!

Clash a calculated prefab enterprise? So it ain't so Joe Bummer! Good to see you Mitchum.

80. Now you're talkin'
I agree with you on all those bands except for Flux of Pink Indians.

I'm gonna go put Maximum Rock-n-Roll's "Not So Quiet on the Western Front" compilation on the turntable and pretend it's 1982.

82. My favorite was GDMFSOB by Bad Posture
"The Oven Is My Friend" was a twisted little ditty I loved as well.

I think I saw Rebel Truth at the Crest Theater way back in the day.

96. I'm envious.
I never got to see Rebel Truth.
I became friends with the singer/guitarist after the fact.
The Crest, huh? I remember seeing X and the Flesheaters there.
Did you ever go to shows at Club Minimal?
All this talk of Not So Quiet On The Western Front reminded me to download it.

98. Never made it to Club Minimal
I saw a whole lotta shows at The Crest. I saw some shows at the Vortex. Saw Oingo Boingo at Galactica 2000. Saw a crazy show at a barn somewhere outside of Roseville. Ahh, the old days. Do you remember the Schmidt "sport packs" for $2.99? As much a mainstay of the Sacto punk scene as any band.

I'm looking for the Code of Honor album, but so far no luck.

57. Agreed as far as
the Vandals are concerned. Probably should have put them on over NOFX. As for TSOL, maybe if there were 20 slots instead of just 10. Neither would've come close to winning though IMO.

64. Thank you for NOT putting Blink-182 on the list
Decent band...but...

* lead singer is too pretty to be punk--and the band is fronted by a guy.

* drummer Travis Barker is WAY overrated...he's good, mind you, but Josh Freese and Smelly from NOFX are both better punk drummers and Josh and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater are better drummers overall.

* and any band that makes the freepers' Top 50 Conservative Rock Songs can't be a punk band anyway.

Everything about them was the embodiment of punk. Even their shambolic, drug fueled, metal tinged end was done on their own terms and to piss as many people off as possible. And that's punk.
