1. I was hoping for a well-pitched defensive struggle.
But a beer-league softball game broke out. Seeing Yankees lose is not bad at all. :)

I was at the Jake when Sandy Alomar hit a seventh inning home run to beat the Yankees and get the tribe to the World Series...

People were weeping...

They will go crazy tonight if they hold on to win...

Productivity will suffer...

30. Lofton's older'n that
He came up with Cleveland in 1948, a week after Larry Doby, and he'd already had 40 years in the Negro Leagues then.

Plus, his career was interrupted by WWII, during which he shot down 21 Luftwaffe aircraft as a member of the 332nd Fighter Group, nee the Tuskegee Airmen.

Here's a photo of him after his incredible catch off Willie Mays in the '54 Series. (He actually ran out of the Polo Grounds and jumped over the Harlem River to make the catch.)

36. Bzzzt!
Doubleday had nothing to do with the "invention" of baseball. The legend has him drawing a field in the dirt near Cooperstown in 1839, but he was at West Point then.

The credit belongs to Alexander Cartwright, who adapted "town ball" to become baseball in 1845; most of the parameters he laid out are still used today. But the first documented reference was in "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book," published in England in 1744, which contained the following poem with an engraving depicting kids playing a game with posts as bases:

Base-Ball.

The Ball once struck off,
Away flies the Boy
To the next destin'd Post
And then Home with Joy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_baseball

(My original source for this, years ago, was "Baseball: An Informal History" by Douglas Wallop, author of "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant," which became "Damn Yankees" on the stage and screen.)

Terrible broadcast! And all the radio stations this morning were on about its suckiness, too. Definitely a topic of conversation in Red Sox Nation.

37. They're AWFUL!
Who *are* these commentators?

"If you want to generate runs and win games, you need baserunners"
"You can't win if your pitching isn't there for you"
"Obviously you can do a lot of damage with the longball"

I know that's not exactly what they've said, but it's damn close. It's like they hired the families of Captain Obvious to call the games.

Actually, here's one quote I do remember from todays Rox game:
"To win in a playoff situation you have to keep the other team off the board"

No shit, eh?

38. I'm cable-deprived, so I'm spared
But I went to the TBS web site last night to see what all the fuss was about, and I was shocked — nay, appalled. They have this thing called the "Hot Corner" (gee, that's original) that's like baseball meets MTV.

I mean, what the FUCK??

Alyssa Milano will contribute regular reports and features from MLB parks as teams battle it out for postseason contention. She joins Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn and the Hot Corner crew to give you the inside scoop around the Majors.

http://www.tbs.com/sports/mlb/

Being cable-deprived also means I don't get to see any of the NLCS, since TBS has the rights to that, too.

:grr:

39. You don't know what you're missing
Until today, I did not know that in order to win, a team must score more times than it's opponent! In addition, there are no ties in baseball. I thought they played extra innings sometimes because they were just having fun!

Also, if a team wants to generate runs, they need to get hits. Apparently that's key. I'm really happy that the TBS crew can break things down to this level because I just got here from Mars and I have no idea what's going on with this "baseball". Also, I speak no English. This is just randomly generated text :)

Thanks TBS, for clearing things up for me!
